šŸ’” Six year old Gene wants to come light up your life! Read more about him: Gene is a striking white and brindle male who embodies the calm disposition typical of greyhounds, yet he also has moments of silliness that keep things lively. Known as a ā€œvelcro dog,ā€ Gene loves to follow you around the house, reminding you just how affectionate this breed can be.

Based on his previous living situation, Gene isnā€™t a good fit for apartment living, as he thrives better in a home with space to roam and relax. Gene is fine with other dogs, though he needs some supervision during feeding time to prevent any resource-guarding issues.

During daily walks, he interacts well with small dogs without showing aggression. However, lots of neighborhood noises (lawn mowers, trash trucksā€¦) are a little scary for him.

Interestingly, Gene might be okay with cats. Heā€™s been known to approach the neighborā€™s cat in their yard with curiosity, barking playfully yet remaining non-aggressive when she playfully bops him on the nose. He has not been officially cat-tested.

Gene loves his food and treats, often benefiting from a slow-feeder bowl. While he can be a bit of a counter-surfer, he usually listens when corrected. This is a work in progress!

One of Geneā€™s standout qualities is his calm demeanor at home. Heā€™s 100% housebroken, doesnā€™t require crating, and has no destructive behaviors. He can comfortably be left home alone with another greyhound for a few hours, making him a low-maintenance companion.

Car rides can be a bit stressful for Gene, so itā€™s essential to ensure he feels secure. However, he thoroughly enjoys having human visitors at the house, showcasing his friendly personality and love for social interaction.

Gene exemplifies the lovable traits of greyhoundsā€”gentle, playful, and affectionate. While he has some quirks, like resource-guarding and his counter-surfing, these are manageable with understanding and training. If youā€™re considering adopting a greyhound, remember that they can be wonderful companions, just like Gene!

Itā€™s time to say farewell to 2024 and hello to 2025! In 2024, we faced significant, challenging change. We said a farewell of sorts to our founders, John and Susie McQuade, who retired from their leadership roles. We hope to still see them often at our future events. We also said so long to our boarding kennel, successfully transitioning back to a ā€œfoster onlyā€ organization.

During these transitions, we never lost sight of our mission and welcomed 79 hounds to the GALT Dallas/Albuquerque family. Nine of these hounds came back for a second placement through no fault of their own and 47 of these hounds came from Australia, including our 100th Aussie, Zara! Our Dallas/Albuquerque adoption teams worked hard finding fabulous forever families and facilitating the adoption of 108 hounds. Currently, we have about two dozen hounds in Dallas/Albuquerque foster homes, three of which are on Injured Reserve (Mick, Nollie, and Ruby) receiving treatment for heartworm. Foster homes remain one of our tightest resources. Click here to learn how you can help in 2025.

In February, as GALT prepared to celebrate its 23rd birthday, GALT Arizona was born, opening up new channels to adopters further west. Since its inception, GALT Arizona has helped welcome 62 Aussies, working with volunteers in Dallas, New Mexico, and several Arizona adoption groups. GALT Arizona placed 26 of these hounds with forever families in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Arkansas, and Hawaii.

With all of our hard work, we also had fun last year! We enjoyed seeing you and showing off our hounds at the North Texas Irish Festival and Great Global Greyhound Walks. We celebrated Mardi Gras in style at GALTā€™s Krew Of Roo and came together again for our Dia De Los Mu***os Celebration at Salum Restaurant! We hope you all enjoyed helping the hounds by shopping with us at our three on-line auctions: our Ready, Set, Spring Auction, GALTā€™s Fabulous Finds Fall Auction, and our 2024 Holiday For The Hounds Auction. Our annual Holiday Boutique and Santa Photos was a joyful record breaking celebration of the holiday season! Thank you all for coming out to shop and to see Santa Vern!

Thanks also to everyone who supported our on-line fundraisers, including North Texas Giving Day, Giving Tuesday, and our year end finale, the 2024 Holiday Angels Matching Fund! Our 2024 Holiday Angels really helped us celebrate the holidays by pledging $20,000 in matching funds! With your help, we met the challenge raising $22,523, for a total of $42,523, to start 2025 off with a bang!

Working together in 2024, we helped a lot of hounds along their journeys home forever. We are ready to do it all again in 2025! Thank you for your contribution, whatever its size and form!

Aussie gal, Dolly, is ready to find her forever home. Read more about her: This four-year-old lovable Aussie, who once graced the tracks for 20 races, still has a special way of winning the hearts of anyone sheā€™s around.

Sheā€™s our first foster, and this 60-pound beauty has been an easy fit with our all male-pack, which includes a five-year-old Greyhound/Saluki, a four-year-old Pomeranian and our 12-year-old terrier mix. Dolly has a crush on the older guy, she realizes heā€™s the Alpha, and she always gives him space.

Dollyā€™s demeanor is one of grace and quiet independence at times. She likes her napping, and she has really warmed up to hugs and extra attention! Her chestnut brown eyes always have a twinkle and her black fur feels like youā€™re running your fingers through powdered sugar.

Dolly has lovely house manners and lightly whimpers by the door when she wants out. She loves her running time in our backyard, and she has fun watching for squirrels with our pack! Weā€™ve started to see her begin to play with toys, which is very puppy-like! Sheā€™s ALWAYS up for an outing and is a dream to walk on a leash. Plus, when it comes to stormy Texas weather, she doesnā€™t seem affected at all.

We donā€™t recommend apartment living because she can be vocal at times in a charming way. This also makes for a great watchdog. And because sheā€™s a social butterfly, we donā€™t think sheā€™d excel as an only dog.

We were told she loved her food and liked to gobble it. So, she quickly adjusted to a slow-eating bowl, and she enjoys every morsel! Treats are extra special to this lanky darling, and Dolly has her own way of letting us know sheā€™s extremely thankful each time she gets one!

Dolly has been a HUGE blessing for us, and we know sheā€™ll fill someoneā€™s heart in a BIG way!

Charlie has recovered from heartworm and is ready to find his forever home. Cats are ok for him. Read more: Please donā€™t let Charlieā€™s large gruff exterior deter you, inside heā€™s as sweet as candy! His loving eyes hold a gaze like no other. Sure, he has a huge head, controlled by a bigger heart. Charlie wants nothing more than to be close to his peopleā€¦.and I mean really close! Personal space means nothing to him ā€“ you can take things out of his mouth or move him when heā€™s asleep. If you look up Velcro in the dictionary, imagine Charlie ā€“ stuck to you, leaning so hard you could topple over if you donā€™t steady yourself. Where you go, he will follow.

Mornings can be rather interesting, especially in cooler weather. He has a burst of energy and will ā€œraceā€ around the house literally bouncing off furniture and playing with his housemates ā€“ itā€™s typically his prep to go out to potty. This can be problematic at our house because all his friends are at least 30 lbs lighter than him. Charlie doesnā€™t really have a concept of his size, at all. For this reason, we believe he will do best in a house with sturdy human and canine companions.

Charlie enjoys being outside watching for squirrels and other critters, or lounging in the sun. His potty habits are impeccable, and pretty predictable. When he starts to get crazy excited (ok, annoying), then itā€™s probably time to go out.

High on his list of favorites ā€“ treats (which he takes ever so gently), any couch or bed (even the people bed), going for a car ride, barking at strangers out the window, toys (squeaky, crinkly, Benebones and balls), and playing fetch. He has been known to unstuff some stuffies and enjoy playing with the ā€œcarcassā€.

Things that make Charlie nervous or agitated ā€“ thunder, dogs barking on the other side of a fence on a walk, and random events on a walk that make him want to sled-dog home. We learned to never pull him by his collar, always use a leash to redirect him. That must have been a trigger in his original home.

When weā€™re out of the house Charlie is crated. We needed to do that during his heartworm treatment and determined itā€™s best for all involved to crate him still. He happily goes in to get his treats. And boy howdy, he gets SUPER excited when we come home to let him out. We can hear him barking with excitement from the garage. We make sure to open the back door before we open the crateā€¦then stand back for the rush.

When left to roam, Charlie has been known to find things that arenā€™t hisā€¦letā€™s say he can have a voracious ā€œappetiteā€ for books. From a decorating perspective, youā€™ll want to move any table or desk away from in front of a window. Charlie will jump on furniture to look outside.

Charlie never met a couch or dog bed that he didnā€™t like. When weā€™re watching TV in the evening, he wants your undivided attention while he gets comfortable so he can snuggle up with his giant (heavy) head on your lap. OK, sometimes it takes a while, with lots of head butts and moving around before he finally settles for a nice long nap. In order for everyone to get sleep, and avoid midnight meandering around the house, we broke the cardinal rule and let Charlie sleep in the people bed with us. He does take up a lot of the bed and eventually settles around our feet quietly for the night. Heā€™ll wake up when you do and happily starts the day.

The ideal home for Charlie will have a yard, people to adore/follow/use as pillows, yummy treats, comfortable beds and a couch big enough for everyone. Heā€™s wonderful with his housemates, likes to be brushed, comes when called, crates well for up to 6 hours and is an epic love bug. If you donā€™t mind your personal space invaded by an 85 lb Irish Wolfhound/Mastiff mix ā€“ Charlieā€™s your guy.

šŸ’” In Loving Memory of Millie

GALT NM foster Millie, beloved Greyhound ( #3713, fka Atascocita Lisp), peacefully passed away on December 27, 2024, after a courageous battle with mast cell cancer. Born June 20, 2014, Millie's spirit shone brightly in her months with us, a testament to the resilience of the greyhound breed.

Since entering GALT's care in May 2024, Millie touched the hearts of many. Her journey highlighted the unwavering support of the greyhound community ā€“ a true reflection of GALT's core belief: "No grey turned away." Generous donations from across the organization ensured Millie received the best possible care, and a stroke of "luck" placed her with Dr. Ginger Luck, a compassionate veterinarian who was her devoted foster mom.

Ginger provided Millie with exceptional care and unwavering love during her treatment and in her final months. Millie will be deeply missed by Ginger and all who knew and cherished her. Millie was a championship snuggler, had a playful spirit and loved to dress up. The accompanying photo captures one of her favorite pastimes ā€“ joyfully frolicking in the snow.

Rest in peace, sweet Millie.
