And another missing dog via Rover.
So, as the owner of a professional dog walking and pet sitting company, it’s my duty to tell everyone, once again, that Rover is not a pet sitting company. It is an app platform that literally anyone can list themselves on. The sitters on the Rover app are not experienced, insured, or trained in any way. They have no idea what to do in the event of a medical emergency. They do this as a side gig along with their Uber and Door Dash gigs. Rover is responsible for thousands of lost, insured, and dead pets each year. So I’m going to shout it so those in the back can hear…

Please don’t let children interact inappropriately with your dog! This is how kids get hurt and dogs get killed. Use some common sense. If you wouldn’t want it done to you then your dog probably doesn’t want it done to them.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

🧐 While I love apps that help get entrepreneurs off the ground, many people on both sides of the app, do not really understand the full responsibility that is being placed on them. Please educate yourselves and be an advocate for the professional industry! 🙏

Rover sitters should read this and make sure to take care of themselves by getting personal liability insurance and make sure you have great health coverage. (Just in case! Some health insurance agencies will not cover a work related injury so be sure you are covered!) The new terms and service don’t cover or protect the sitter/boarder.

‼️CLIENTS‼️
Rover clients should know to ask about these things before hiring a sitter to make sure that they are, in fact, working with a professional. If you use a pet sitter or someone through Rover to board your dog PLEASE ask them if they have their OWN business insurance policy. If they say they don’t need it because Rover ‘takes care of it’s, think again. Often times the boarder doesn’t have permission from landlord if they rent, nor do they have the adequate coverage to board dogs.
