Sometimes, we need to step up our treat game, and this team is a big fan of using hotdogs as a valuable reinforcer for behavior. Remember: the more difficult the task, the higher the value of the reinforcer should be!
What are some ways you level up your treat game so your dog is able to do hard things?
Thanks @wolvesofglendale for making this fire sound 🔥👏

When you beg and plead with your dog that indoor activities are better than playing or long walks in the mid day heat... so you compromise and do outdoor activities inside the house 😂

One thing we love about The Big Feelings Club, is our flexibility in creating a training environment around what sets up each individual dog for success. Reactivity is not black and white, and there is a huge range of variables involved in creating successful training (threshold, triggers, exhibited behaviors, etc) that shape our behavior plans for each dog.
In this video we have:
Rocket, the black and white border collie, nervous about other dogs and their proximity to him
Maggie, the golden doodle, is frustrated that she can’t say hi to every dog and person
Zoey, the pittie in the distance, is working through reactivity in regards to her arousal and over stimulation when dogs are present.
Each dog has a different threshold, and we are able to work this trio in the same space while being mindful of their capabilities and distance needed. If you’re a current client interested in our next round of TBFC, send us a message and we’ll get you on our list. It is beyond beneficial for any of our clients working through any level of reactivity.

Harley is working on foundation steps for muzzle conditioning, so she can be introduced to her new cat sibling, Toby.
Hot tip: We like to start all muzzle conditioning by teaching a dog the behavior of putting their nose into objects. This makes the transition of that already known behavior easy peasy when introducing the actual muzzle 💪 💜

Juneaux is a box shredding queen! Shredding is a natural dog behavior, and providing our dogs with outlets for shredding minimizes unwanted destruction. Not only is this activity enriching, but it also helps break down boxes for recycling. Double win!

Rocky has some feelings about people and dogs outside of his fence line.
He just wants to say hi, but they just keep walking by. So frustrating!
We’re working on a Control Unleashed pattern game, Give me a break, to help Rocky move away from the fence line with his handler and therefore preventing the escalation of barking/lunging and generally losing it. He’s doing such a nice job and his mom is working extra hard to help her happy good boy learn to self regulate 👏💙

Just two good foster dogs learning to hang out without yelling at each other. Burrata, the Corgi and the gorgeous Penne, German Shepherd, have both been adopted since. 🙌 #dogtrainersofinstagram #bossbabedogtraining #positivereinforcement #dogbehavior #behaviormodification #forcefreetrainer #rewardbaseddogtraining
Way to go Pepper! 🥰🌶️
Pepper struggles with leash reactivity to other dogs, bikes and cars. So our first step in resolving this, is to build better engagement with her handlers when outside with no triggers in the environment. We started the walk with minimal attention or interest in food, and we also made the decision to walk the same path back to minimize the sniffy distractions.
Of course she knocked it out of the park. She was checking in so frequently we had to switch to intermittent reinforcement. Goodest girl!
[VD: A black and white dog outside on a leash walk working on their reactivity. They check in and come back to their handlers regularly and are fed delicious treats.]
Here is an adorable video of Doberman Roscoe playing voluntary 123 and then sprinting back to his mat 🤣. Roscoe previously struggled with reactivity to all the things on leash and a bite history with strangers in the home.

Build your own dig pit for your dogs!
Thanks to our @dogbybox this month we were able to create a fun and enriching activity for our pups to enjoy.
With just a few steps you can also create a dig pit.
Step 1: Is just selecting a location that works for your yard to build your pit, whether you make a permanent fixture or use a temporary pop up solution.
Using loose soil or sand in the dig area can make it easier for your pups to enjoy.
Step 2: Create a perimeter. This illustrates a boundary to your dogs on where it is okay to dig.
Step 3: Toys & Treats. Burying toys and treats just below the surface of the dig area can encourage your dogs to participate in the activity. Also using cues and encouragement can entice them, but also teaches them where the activity is okay to do.
Step 4: Supervise and Redirect. Supervising the activity ensures your dog understands the purpose of the dig pit. If they start digging elsewhere, gently redirect them to the designated area. Be patient and consistent with redirection and rewards.
Side note: Periodically refresh the soil in the dig pit, as the dirt may compact over time. You can add more loose soil or sand as needed. This also maintains cleanliness of the area. Replace buried toys and treats to keep the area stimulating.

Team Zoey’s progress has been so amazingggg
At our first working session, Zoey’s threshold when seeing another dog without a reaction was so far, nearly half a football field.
Zoey’s people have been working hard, and we reintroduced a helper stuffed dog at this session (plus other dogs in the wild) and barely a whine. So so happy with the direction we’re headed.
Go team Zoey! 👏💜

Just another update on the wonderful Rowan enjoying his newly adopted life. Love working with this happiest boy and his fab people 🥰
