Mr. Gus. This kid just has my heart (let's be honest, they all do). As a reactive dog in recovery, he's really come a long way! It is a continuous process, as can be the case with any recovery, but even with just management and cheese, progress can be made. If you don't force your dog to confront what they fear and allow them to move a safe distance from their triggers (in Gus's case, other dogs when on-leash), plenty of dogs will happily take space from their trigger and then you let the cheese flow!
Not every dog is as dreamy to train as Gus is (this guy learns so, so, so fast and he is motivated by EVERYTHING) but that's ok! You can do it too!
Some simple tips, know you're dog's threshold very well and stay under it. Never leave the house without a pocket full of treats. Put your head phones in (one ear only, please), play your favorite book or song and tuck your phone away in your pocket. No phone calls or texts allowed when walking! This is your moment with your pet. It is their time to shine and your time to listen.
Is your dog giving you eye contact? Good! Here's a treat! Not giving you eye contact? Hold still....wait for it....there it is! Good! Here's a treat! Happen to be leaving some slack in the leash AND sniffing around? How polite! Good! Here's a handful of treats scattered in the grass in front of you!
Dogs do a lot of very nice things and, dare I say, we miss most of them. The snuggles are top notch and prolonged eye contact when you're using the restroom is a personal favorite but the good stuff lies in the check-ins outside, the following you as you walk away, the taking a few more seconds to sniff something because they know you're cool and won't interrupt. Be cool to your dogs!! They deserve it!
