โ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธPet owners, keep this in mind and keep those paws cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿพ

Dogs and cats have sensitive paw pads that become vulnerable in the heat. Surfaces such as pavement, asphalt and artificial grass can become searingly hot causing blisters or burns on their paw pads.

๐ŸŽ‡ On July 4, many animals become startled or frightened by the noise of fireworks. This may cause them to flee from familiar environments and people, and sadly become lost.

๐Ÿ”– Ensure they are wearing their tags and that their microchips are current with correct contact information. New technology includes GPS collars and geo location tags.

๐Ÿ™‰ Provide safe zones and sound buffers indoors to minimize stress.

๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ If they must go outside, they must be on a leash.

Motherโ€™s Day is on Sunday! There are so many ways to say โ€œthank youโ€ and celebrate moms for all that they do, but the most common, go-to gift is a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. Here are a few of our favorite flowers that are pet-safe too!

This puppy is almost as long as his mom's abdominal cavity! These are the x-rays from a Dachshund mom that was in recently after extended labor. There's no wonder she was struggling to deliver on her own. The puppy is huge!

Dogs usually take between 3-12 hours to deliver puppies. Labor that extends longer than that can leave the mom too weak to deliver and puppies with low blood flow. A dog that has labor lasting over four hours without producing a puppy should be evaluated by a veterinarian for signs of puppy distress or injury to the mom. The puppy was able to be delivered by our doctors and staff at Carroll County Animal Hospital, and mom is recovering well.

SAVE A LIFE by identifying rabbit nests before mowing your lawn this spring! Rabbits will reproduce from spring through fall, and love to nest in open grassy lawns. Mother rabbits dig a shallow burrow just below the surface of the grass, then line the burrow with fur and grass. They will then cover the nests with dead grass, hiding their babies and disguising their nest as a small dead patch of grass.

By checking your lawn for rabbit nests before mowing or letting pets in your yard, you may save a litter of baby eastern cottontails. If you do find a nest in your yard, simply avoid mowing that area and keep pets away. Young rabbits leave their nests within just 3-4 weeks, so these precautions are only necessary for a short time. Please help us share this information so that we may save nesting rabbits this nesting season!

Today is ! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

According to The Humane Society of the United States, there is an estimated 70 million stray and homeless pets in the United States, making overpopulation the largest issue currently present in animal sheltering and welfare. In just 7 years, ONE unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies, and ONE unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens.

Not only is spaying and neutering your pet absolutely essential for helping end animal homelessness, but it can also save YOUR pet's life! Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50% of dogs and 90% of cats, and neutering can prevent testicular cancer and some prostate problems. In addition to medical benefits, spaying and neutering can save you from expensive and frustrating behavioral issues.

If you have not already, please consider spaying or neutering your pet, and if you do want to add a pet to your family, check out local shelters and rescues before shopping from breeders! If you adopted from a shelter (like MCASAC!) your dog or cat is already spayed! ๐Ÿ˜„.
