Well, it's been over 7 years since we moved to a remote off-grid cabin deep in Ithaca's Emerald Necklace, and so much has changed. We quickly found that our forested setting had little to offer our sheep. We knew they would be much happier in greener pastures, so we discontinued our lawn care services and carefully placed them all into good homes. We turned this hunting cabin into a comfortable home with running water and solar power; so comfortable that we decided to start a family, and so well-powered that we have been able to work from home since the beginning of the covid pandemic. We discovered miniature dairy goats, browsers who are much happier with our wooded paddocks, and will soon offer goat soap and lotions infused with essential oils created from herbs grown in our gardens.
Our off-grid experience has been full of false starts and full re-writes, but at last we finally feel like we've found the right path for ourselves, our animals, and the land. Our property is now protected with a permanent conservation easement, the majority of which is set aside solely for the benefit of the natural world.
