“The general public does not understand the dire consequences of “just one litter.” They don’t understand how pets reproduce. If we neuter before adoption, their lack of understanding, procrastination, and financial priorities all become non-issues.

We know from studies that compliance with spay/neuter contracts and deposit systems is only 60%. We know that the contracts may not stand up in court. If only a small percentage of the pets we place for adoption go on to have ”just one litter,” are we not, in fact, contributing to the very problems we’re working so desperately to solve?

Perhaps we should take the responsibility on ourselves, by seeing that no animal ever leaves our care before it is sterilized.”

Just because your cat may not prefer to sit on your lap doesn't mean kitty isn't displaying affectionate behavior in other ways. Your cat may prefer to sit next to you or sit just out of reach. Your cat may enjoy being on your lap but without being stroked. What's important is that you provide your cat with the choice of where to be and whether to interact physically. When you offer choice and respect your cat's preferences, that's how you build trust and the bond will strengthen.

Pay attention to whether your cat wants to be petted, as well as where on the body is enjoyable and where it isn't. For most cats, that's around the head area, but pay attention to YOUR cat's specific preferences. And, it's not just about where to pet, it's also about how you pet and for how long. Does your cat like to be scratched under the chin or are gentle strokes on the back of the head more enjoyable? Does your cat have a petting time limit? Pay attention to what your cat does or doesn't like. If your cat isn't giving consent to be petted, it doesn't mean affection isn't being shown in other ways. Don't miss those signs.

Our BACK TO BASICS SERIES: FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

FIV is a virus specific to cats and is often erroneously referred to as "cat AIDS." It is similar to AIDS in that it attacks and weakens the immune system and there is no cure. Reliable information about FIV is plentiful on the internet. We encourage you to learn more about it.

Here are some quick facts:
➡FIV is transmitted through deep bite wounds.
➡FIV is NOT transmissible to humans or dogs.
➡Cats with FIV can live long, healthy, happy and normal lives!
➡Intact males with outdoor access are most likely to be infected.
➡Kittens may be infected before, during, or after birth (while nursing).
➡FIV is quickly diagnosed through a blood test.
➡If you have an indoor/outdoor cat, you risk its FIV status every time it goes outdoors.
➡FIV+ cats CAN live with non-infected cats as long as they can co-exist peacefully. (Remember, this virus is primarily transmitted through deep bite wounds. If the cats don't fight, there's little worry about transmission.)
➡In the U.S., approximately 2.5-5% percent of healthy cats are infected with FIV.

📢 EDUCATION IS KEY!!!!! FIV+ cats have a VERY difficult time getting adopted because of their status. In the past, they were immediately euthanized instead of put up for adoption. Help CHANGE THE PARADIGM! Educate others about the virus and how cats can live a long, healthy, normal life with FIV. Manage expectations. Let's get these cats in homes!

📢 If you're in rescue or doing TNR, please note:
➡Before you place a cat for adoption (or send it to foster in a home with other cats), it should be tested for FIV. Adopt that cat out with full disclosure about its FIV status.
➡Beware of false positives in kittens under 6 months of age!
➡You can place FIV+ cats in homes with other cats that are not FIV+. Educate the adopter and make sure the cats are not likely to fight with each other.
➡We don't FIV test the cats we TNR. Alley Cat Allies also holds this position.

This graphic represents one unspayed female, her mate, and all her offspring, producing 2 litters a year with 2.8 kittens surviving per litter.

It explains why the number of cats gets out of control very, very quickly when they are left unfixed.

It is so important that you get any stray/feral community cat SPAYED or NEUTERED immediately. Make sure all your friends and family have their pet cats spayed and neutered, too.
