Saturday Teen Dog graduates. Congratulations!
Here Bo and I are entering the training center. This is something we have to practice a lot! Bo is always EXCITED to come to training, and she NEEDS to know what's going on in there!
My goal is for her to be able to focus on me after a quick glance around, so we practice unprompted attention just inside the door.
You can see that we enter the building twice. For the first rep, she doesn't turn back to me until she gets to the end of the leash, and I'd like her to stay more connected to me as we walk in. The first rep tells me that I need to help her a bit more, so for the second rep, I cue her to look at me as soon as we step in, and we're a lot more successful. #showupandtrain

Why train for a dog sport? Because it's fun!
The main thing that got me interested in training dog sports is watching someone train and wondering how they did that! So I'll post a video of my own training once in awhile and try to explain what we're working on.
This is a video of Bo and I doing Rally Obedience. In this sport, you go along a course from station to station, doing an obedience behavior at each sign. The judge scores you on teamwork, heel position, and so on.
I see a lot of room for improvement here- Bo is pretty distracted at the beginning, though she is able to focus better as we go along. I'd like to improve my weird arm position! And a few other things.
So, how do we train for this? I set up each exercise to make it easier for Bo to get it right, and reward better and better performances. She does not get punished for making a mistake, I just go back and figure out how to help her do better with the next rep. She gets a high rate of reinforcement (treats and toys) to make the game fun for her! We break each behavior down into little components and work on them separately- attention, heel position, turns, and so on. We train a lot at home in my kitchen, and we practice with friends, and in different locations.
Why the heck do we do this? For fun! I like to hang out with my training friends. I like to challenge myself to see how we can keep improving my performance. I think Bo likes the brain work, the interaction with me, and of course, the cheese!

We have two spots open in the Agility 1 class starting Sunday the 22nd at 9am. Also a spot has unexpectedly opened in the Manners 1 class starting at 2 tomorrow.
We're excited to offer a new class on Thursday nights- Cooperative Care!
This class will focus on teaching your dog to associate positive feelings to different types of necessary care. We will work on putting on a harness, being brushed/ groomed or handled for routine veterinary care.
Helping your dog feel comfortable with handling will result in less stress at the vet and groomer, and often better quality of care. Start your young puppy off right with these skills, or help your older dog feel less apprehensive.
In this video, Bo, who has struggled with being handled, is learning that having her nails done is safe and comfortable, and follows a predictable routine. We move at her pace, which has actually allowed us to make much faster progress than when she was pushed to the edge of her comfort zone. We do a few minutes of this type of work as part of our daily training.
You may not want to learn how to grind your dog's nails yourself, but you can teach your dog to be more comfortable with handling, resulting in a better quality of life.
Intro to Rally and Tricks mini-classes are a wrap! Thanks to everyone who participated, and see you in the new year!! #everydogtrainingcenter #dogtraining #danversdogtraining
A puppy's critical socialization period lasts until around 14 weeks of age. Early socialization to a variety of auditory, tactile and visual experiences can have beneficial effects of a puppy's behavioral health as they grow up. Socialization is not the same as Puppy Play Dates.
Have you used platforms to teach obedience behaviors? If you want to try it, join us for a mini class on Sunday evenings, starting this week. #everydogtrainingcenter ##akcobedience #rallyobedience
There's still time to sign up for Polite Leash Walking and Come When Called, both 4 week classes starting tonight!
We've still got room in Amy's classes starting tomorrow night! Tricks, Manners 2, and Puppy Fun Social Hour!
Congratulations to Cai and Bosley for their awesome showing at the Riverside PSD trial this weekend! They got two first places and a second place, and finished Bosley’s Advanced Interiors title. Watch this video to the end, it is so great! 😂
