There are a lot of things beyond our control, but there is one thing within your control: fix your cats. Fix the stray ones you’re feeding, fix the ones you own, tell someone who has a cat how important it is to get them fixed. We have openings on our September 27th transport. Remember, cats can start reproducing at 4 months. Don’t wait! bit.ly/HHSpayNeuter

Every cat or kitten cannot be indoors and I’m sorry about that. I wish reality was different. I really do. Through spay and neuter maybe one day it will be!

But…
It is not the trapper’s fault.
It is not the shelter’s fault.
It is not the caretaker’s fault.
It is not the vet’s fault.
It is not my fault.

When I release a kitten or a friendly cat, it is because there are no other options. Don’t be mad at me. Don’t tell me how you wish I wouldn’t do that. Be mad at the person who didn’t take care of the cat in the first place, not those working on cleaning up what they left behind. 😭

🔥A dangerous heat wave begins today and is expected to last for a few days🔥

🐾 Keep personal animals inside and as cool as possible. Limit time outside to quick bathroom breaks. Heat stroke can occur very quickly.

🐾 Provide water and a cool resting area to stray animals while reaching out for help.

🐾 Report found animals and sightings of strays to https://indylostpetalert.com/ so they can be reunited with their family quickly.

🐾 Check out our website at https://peacefulsoulsanimalrescue.com/ for tips on what to do if you have lost or found a dog.

🐾 Marion County Animal Control officers can be reached 24/7 at https://maps.indy.gov/RequestIndy/ to report concerns with animal treatment and to request a stray animal to be picked up.

🐾 We are providing free dog ID tags to better the chances that a lost dog is returned home quickly. See our pinned post for instructions on how to order tags.

🐾 Please be their voice all the time and especially during this extreme weather!

Handing off free kittens may be getting rid of your immediate problem, but you're literally handing off the problem to someone else. 😞

When people call us for help with spay and neuter, this is one of the most common reasons:

"We rescued this kitten from a lady to help her out, but we really can't afford to get her fixed."

At least they called, MOST do not. 😢
If you TRULY care about cats and kittens and the well-being of them all, you will stop and think before handing off free kittens to the first person who contacts you. And you will spay the mom cat ASAP. ✅ You can safely rehome kittens yourself with an adoption process, but I would encourage you to reach out to a shelter or rescue for guidance on how to do that correctly.

We all need to be aware of the bigger picture and work together to MAKE SURE these mom cats and kittens are all getting fixed before landing in a home. It is not the new owner's responsibility. It is not the old owner's responsibility. It's not a volunteer organization's responsibility.

‼️ It is EVERYONE's responsibility to make sure spay/neuter happens ‼️

Time and time again, pet owners give up their pets to shelters due to feelings of inadequacy. Reasons such as working full-time, limited living space, and lifestyle guilt are often cited for surrendering their cherished companions. However, we have an important message for you: You should keep your pet.

On average, Americans work 8.49 hours per day, with some working even longer hours. Among them are students who are committed to their studies. While it would be ideal to spend all our time at home with our pets and loved ones, this scenario is uncommon. The concept of the "perfect home" is rare for most pets, but to them, your home, family, and the time you share are what truly matter. If you decide to give up a dog or cat to a shelter, it's unlikely they will find someone who can be with them more than you. They are likely to end up in a new home with a family that is away just as much as you are. You should keep your pet.

We frequently hear that pets need more room to run. While this may be accurate, your pet might also be perfectly happy with an additional 10 minutes during their walk or spending a bit more time at their favorite sniffing spot. Given the choice, they would prefer a bit less activity time over being confined in a kennel for most of the day as shelter staff work hard to find them a new home. Go for a little longer of a walk. You should keep your pet.

There are numerous ways to enhance your pet's quality of life while aligning with your lifestyle requirements. Don't overlook the benefits of enrichment activities. Engaging in puzzle toys, brain games, training, or even short 10-15 minute sessions can help keep your pet active and content. We are happy to share games and enrichment ideas to help you along. You should keep your pet.

Owning a pet is a lifelong commitment, and we understand that various circumstances can unfortunately lead to pet surrender. Animal Shelters across the country are in crisis. There are more pets than people able to adopt. While we understand the guilt of working and small spaces, please consider the alternative. A life stuck in a small kennel, limited contact with people, limited exercise, and the grief of losing the family they love so much.

You are enough. You should keep your pet.

Hendricks County Humane Society

Hendricks County Humane Society (Hendricks Humane) is a not-for-profit 501(c)-3 organization, founded in 1970.

Our programs solely depend on the generosity of our donors; membership drives; fundraising events; bequests and memorial contributions. We do not receive tax money or government assistance. Hendricks Humane is dedicated to “Facilitating Animal Welfare by Being a Voice for the Animals”; our primary purpose is to serve the animals and people living in Hendricks County.

Hendricks Humane is open on Monday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from noon until 4:00 p.m. We employ part-time staff to assist families who are in need of our programs.

While one part of our mission is to care for and foster animals; we are not an animal shelter. The Hendricks County Animal Shelter and Control is located across from Hendricks Regional Hospital on Old US Hwy 36 or East Main Street in Danville. The HCACS is not associated with Hendricks Humane and is funded by taxpayer money. The phone number is 317-745-9250 and should be contacted for any concerns on animals in danger.
