Anxiety.
We've all felt it. We've all been there.
Shelter animals are no stranger to stress and anxiety. Some animals adjust perfectly to shelter life, others deteriorate over times, and some just cannot cope from the get-go.
Sandra Dee (2 year old pittie mix) and Roxy (3 year old lab/hound mix) are two shelter dogs that are quickly losing their minds ๐
Despite out best efforts (enrichment, rearranging kennels, long walks, medications, setting a routine, music, etc.) every single day Roxy and Sandra Dee sit at the shelter is the worst day of their lives. They pace until their paws are bloody, they chew metal bowls, destroy toys, they spin, they cry, they fight going back into their kennel...they just ache internally and physically to be in a home.
Seeing a shelter dog's behavior decline firsthand and knowing that there is nothing really you can do is absolutely heartbreaking. We need help. We need to find these girls a forever home or a foster home now. The tricky part is finding the right patient home.
Roxy is looking for a patient home that can work with her as she settles into home life. She is currently on medication to help calm her, and most likely would need to continue medication until she learns her new routine. Her ideal home would be one where someone is home most of the time. She does well with other dogs and would be ok with kids of all ages. Right now, Roxy is definitely a nervous nelly; but we know she has the potential to do well in a home.
Sandra Dee is a little more challenging to find placement. Sandra prefers women and needs a quieter home. Her separation anxiety is more intense; so an adopter that is experienced with training strategies would be ideal. She will also most likely have to be on calming medication as she transitions to home life, potentially long term. Unfortunately, Sandra Dee needs to be the only pet in the home. The good news, behind all the anxiety and stress... Sandra Dee is a snuggler. She loves to wiggle up and cuddle. She just needs time and to build trust on her terms.
If you are interested in adopting or fostering please stop by the shelter to meet with them. Both of these girls urgently need help and a chance at finding a loving home.
