I saw a comment about a DNA test where someone’s Yorkie was labeled as not being purebred because it showed half Biewer Terrier and half Yorkshire Terrier, and they were calling it a mixed breed.
So, is a Biewer Terrier a Yorkie?
It’s not commonly known, but Biewer Terriers are the result of two Yorkshire Terriers with a recessive gene. This dates back to the 1980s, before DNA testing was available. The Biewer breeding program noticed tricolor puppies with a white base coat in one of their litters. When they approached the kennel club, the club refused to classify them as Yorkshire Terriers. Instead, they named the new breed after the family's surname, Biewer.
Remember, this was before DNA testing. While Biewer Terriers share many features with Yorkies, what makes them unique is that their specific lineage comes exclusively from the Biewer breeding program.
Once DNA testing became widely available, tricolor Yorkie puppies were tested and confirmed to be 100% Yorkshire Terrier. Over time, these tricolor Yorkies were given the name PARTI Yorkies, and they are recognized as Yorkshire Terriers. However, DNA testing identifies any dogs from the original Biewer breeding program as Biewer Terriers.
To simplify, Biewer Terriers are essentially PARTI Yorkies that existed before DNA testing could prove they were 100% Yorkie. I hope this helps clear things up!
