Here are some interesting facts about what causes periodontal disease in our pets:
• When bacteria combines with the salt naturally found in your dog’s saliva, plaque is formed.
• It takes 24 hours for plaque to form in a clean mouth. When pets’ teeth are not brushed daily, plaque is inevitably formed.
• After 72 hours, plaque will mineralize and turn into calculus, often referred to as "tartar."
• Tartar is easier for plaque to stick to than the naturally smooth surface of the tooth, so it allows more plaque to accumulate quickly.

Some of the things you should look out for when monitoring your pet for periodontal disease:
• Bleeding or inflamed gums
• Discolored teeth
• Loose or missing teeth
• Bad breath
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Drooling
• Favoring one side of the mouth when chewing

It is important to note that some pets can be asymptomatic, especially in the early stages of periodontal disease. This is why a veterinarian's annual dental exam is vital to your pet’s oral health. If you think your pet may be suffering from any of the above, please give us a call so we can get your baby’s teeth sparkling clean and pain free! Don’t forget our special pricing for Dental Health Month!

Lets talk about your pets dental health!

February is recognized as National Pet Dental Health Month to shed light on the significance of our furry friend’s dental health. Dental disease can begin much earlier in your pets life than you may expect. Did you know… over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats by the age of 3 develop some form of periodontal disease? Early detection of dental disease is fundamental for your pets health. When left untreated, dental disease can cause your pet to develop other issues such as heart, lung and liver complications. Our mission here at Bayside Animal Hospital is to educate pet parents on how to give their pet’s the finest care possible. Stay tuned this month as we dive deeper into all things dental!

For every Tuesday in February, we will be honoring a 15% discount on our Dental packages! Call us today for an estimate for your fur baby’s teeth cleaning!

In case anyone hasn’t already heard, October 16-22 is National Veterinary Technician Week. In my eyes, this week long celebration applies to every single person working their tails off and providing the best possible care for our patients. That means Vet Tech Week is meant to honor everyone in the veterinary profession alike (unlicensed veterinary technicians, veterinary receptionists, licensed veterinary technicians, kennel technicians, etc) - I honestly think we should change the name to something more inclusive, but this is a topic for another day! Every single position in this hospital plays a vital role in this crazy, busy little world we call Veterinary Medicine. It takes a very special person to stay in this field. It demands extreme dedication and isn’t for the faint of heart. On crazy busy days when we have so many cases from one extreme to the other, to see every member of my Team change gears so quickly when necessary and work together so seamlessly is absolutely an amazing sight. To say that I am thankful for my Work Family for helping keep my dream alive each and every day is an understatement.

So many are leaving this field as a whole due to various reasons. So, to any veterinary professional reading this, I’d just like to say thank you. Thank you for sticking it out. Our furry, feathery and scaly patients need you!!

The picture below is one of the biggest reasons why I love coming to work… My Team. My Work Family. ❤️

Pet of the month: July Edition 🇺🇸

Olive is a very special patient here at our hospital. Aside from being just the cutest little thing, she is a true warrior! She presented to us in May with sudden onset of vomiting and lethargy. After running the bloodwork in house that Dr. Ederer recommended, it was discovered that Olive was in some serious trouble with Renal Failure at only a few months old! After a ton of hard work by Olive’s owners, the Bayside staff, and the MedVet Mobile staff Olive made a full recovery! She came to visit us just a few weeks later ready for her regular preventative care. What an amazing recovery! Olive’s case stresses the importance of diagnostic testing and proper veterinary care. We are so happy Olive gets to continue coming to see us as a happy and healthy pup!🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

PET OF THE MONTH - 🌞JUNE🌞 EDITION

Meet Winston Davis. 🐾

My first time at Bayside Animal Hospital: December 20, 2021.

I am a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

I was born on October 24, 2021.

My favorite treats: Antlers, Peanut Butter bones & Frosty Paws.

I love to come see everyone at Bayside Animal Hospital and get all the snuggles. ❤️ I know how to sit, lie down and sometimes I will stay. I’m proud to announce that I’m recently potty trained. 😁 Mom couldn’t be happier! I’m SUPER fast and I love to give kisses and hugs ALL THE TIME. I got my first Frosty Paw a couple weeks ago and Mom thought I would’ve sprained my tongue.
