For for all the Yellowstone fans out there or for those of you who saw the viral banamine post on Facebook - This is the most informative post we have seen on why you don’t want to give the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to your horse in the muscle.

Yellowstone fans that are real horse people got a little confusing information on the Sunday, November 17, 2024 episode. This popular show appears to take pride in its western production on being very authentic - yet some how they had a BIG mistake with treating a horse with intramuscular Banamine.

What is the BIG deal? In this Yellowstone episode a horse was administered Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine) intramuscularly. Yet the nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory is only administered orally (in the mouth) or intravenously (in the vein). Remember Banamine is never recommend to be administered to horses any other way.

Why not? Banamine causes muscle damage when injected intramuscularly! There are spores of bacteria known as clostridium that can rest in healthy muscle; however, the bacteria may awaken if the muscle becomes damaged from an IM injection particularly when Banamine is administered this way. This may cause clostridial myositis - which is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. Post injection signs of a problem would be swelling and a painful injection site with gas underneath the skin. The bacterial toxins may migrate into the bloodstream causing depression, colic, fever and a lose of appetite. Treatment by a licensed DVM is necessary if you make this mistake. Supportive care, antibiotics, and possibly a surgical excision of the infected injected site may be necessary.

This episode of Yellowstone was a good reminder - what is entertaining may not always be real and correct. Check with your equine veterinarian if you are unsure how to administer Banamine.

HORSE STILL MISSING AT GOVERNOR DODGE STATE PARK

This beautiful girl is Scarlett. She rolled her rider and ran off spooked from the Driftless Trail near Twin Valley Lake yesterday in the late afternoon.

Despite many looking for her and a drone with thermal capabilites brought in overnight, she is still on the loose.

Please be on the lookout if you are in or around the park today.

She is friendly but likely still spooked. If spotted please call

EHV-1 and EHM

Currently there is an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) and it's mutation, Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Wisconsin. These diseases are highly contagious and are being monitored by the state veterinarian office and equine veterinarians within the state.

While there are currently no cases reported within Lafayette or Green counties, local veterinarians are encouraging horse owners to be familiar with these diseases and using caution while traveling with their horses or visiting equine events.

EHV-1 can cause high fevers, respiratory infections and abortions. Many horses are vaccinated for it (Rhinopneumonitis). Unfortunately, this virus can mutate into a neurological form that can be spread despite vaccination status.

Currently, Center Hill Veterinary Clinic is recommending the following:

1. Make sure your horse is up to date on routine vaccinations. If you have not yet scheduled your spring wellness visit please call your veterinarian to get on their schedule.
2. If you do not need to travel with your horse stay home until the current outbreak has slowed and considered contained. This information will become more clear over the next several weeks.
3. If you do plan to travel with your horse, monitor the re**al temperature twice daily prior to traveling and for three weeks following travel. Fevers of 101.5*F or higher should be reported to your veterinarian. A regular digital thermometer purchased at your local drug store will work well for taking your horse's temperature.
4. It is recommended that horses that have traveled to an equine event should be placed on a three week quarantine prior to returning to the general horse population.
5. If you are visiting an equine event as a spectator wear clean clothes/shoes and do not travel to other barns or areas with horses until your clothes and shoes have been cleaned and disinfected. Luckily this virus is not hardy and regular soap and water is enough to properly clean your clothes and other items.

For those concerned about the upcoming Midwest Horse Fair we want you to know that this situation is being monitored closely by the State Veterinarian Office, the Midwest Horse Fair office and our clinic. Special precautions have already been taken to prepare the grounds and to monitor horses attending the Fair. If you are planning to attend the Midwest Horse Fair with your horse and have specific questions please reach out to the contacts that are in the attendee email. If you are attending as a spectator make sure to follow the above recommendations and wear clean clothes/footwear to the Midwest Horse Fair, don't touch the horses and go home to wash your clothes and footwear prior to traveling to other barns or horse events.

We are following this emerging situation closely and will update our clients of any changes in the current situation.

You can follow the current outbreak here: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/alerts and learn more about EHM here: https://ceh.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/health-topics/equine-herpes-virus-1-myeloencephalopathy
