Let's give a round of applause for Apollo on his FIP Graduation! 🐱🥳

What is the FIP graduation? It is a celebration of a cat that has made it through its 84 days of conditionally approved treatment for feline infectious peritonitis. Although this is a relatively new treatment and there are still things to understand, it is significantly better than the previous alternative. We want to celebrate this important milestone with our pet parents.

What is FIP? FIP or Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a viral disease caused by a feline coronavirus, this virus however needs the perfect conditions to mutate and cause problems. This is not currently connected to the human covid. Once it does it causes a severe immune/inflammatory response leading to excess formation of inflammatory tissues and fluid buildup. Without treatment it is fatal. It is most common in younger cats. Thankfully it is a relatively rare disease.

How is it diagnosed? Sometimes it is as easy as looking at the clinical signs. However, it is not always an easy diagnosis. Many times, it requires relying on a combination of factors such as changes in the animal’s bloodwork, clinical signs, and looking for specific markers.

Is it contagious? Yes and no. The coronavirus itself can be contagious however it MUST mutate to cause the disease.

Why are we talking about it? Until recently FIP was without a cure and was a fatal disease. HOWEVER, recently there has been a conditionally approved treatment that has been shown to be successful in majority of cats IF they respond within the first week of treatment. FIP cats that have undergone the treatment. Our goal is to decrease the anxiety associated with the diagnosis with our pet parents by educating about the newly available treatment.

Special thank you to the Mannon’s allowing us to celebrate with them on this amazing milestone! Pilling a cat twice daily for 12 weeks is no easy feat. Also thank you for letting us dress your cat up and take photos, he was clearly very excited.

We also want to thank and recognize the pet parents that made this possible. Prior to authorization there were several pet parents looking for alternatives to try and treat their cats without an approved medication using experimental medications. These pet parents paved the way for additional information and research that allowed this dream to become a reality.
