Katie and Java kick started the 2026 schooling show season for the Clarity Dressage Team. The pair went down centerline at the 26 April PVDA show at Schooley Mill. The show manager decided to break with tradition of boring old dressage black and white and instituted a 'flower power' theme! Java rocked his custom flowered crochet bonnet to perfection as the pair took on Second 1. Despite some cobwebs from being out of the show ring since last season, Katie and Java scored an impressive 62% earning 2nd place!

Congratulations on getting the season off to a bang!

The start of the OD Triple Crown, OD's No Frills 30 mile LD boasts some of the hardest and most beautiful trail in Virginia. Climbing into West Virginia, the ride follows ridgeline after ridgeline for stunning spring views of the Appalachians. After a brief stop in Laurel Run, the infamous Mail Trail challenges riders early in the season with technical footing (aka rock, rock, more rocks, plus some boulders for variety) and climbs before returning to Laurel Run for a proper hold. The reward for sticking with it is an easy trip down fire road to come back into basecamp in Star Tannery, VA.

Elizabeth on Estrella and Jesseanne with Taxi, after about 5 last minute change of plans, took on the No Frills LD this April to give our National Championship horses some terrain training, preview of NC challenges, and try out our NC shoeing plan. Jesseanne and Taxi started strong and kept it up all day to finish 3rd. Taxi made sure to cool himself thoroughly on the way to finish for quicker pulsing.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Estrella headed out for a fact-finding mission and hopeful conservative ride. About 10 miles in Elizabeth wasn't quite happy with how Strelly felt, but after passing the trot-out and fixing a lost shoe, decided to keep riding. Strell happily marched over the rock and climb of the mail trail and carefully picked her way back down the stream gullies, but Elizabeth chose to play it safe and walk the remaining miles back to Laurel Run and pull. Twenty three beautiful miles of spring in Appalachia with my best pony girl, many facts found, and no regrets about the attempt.

Thank you to the OD team for keeping our riders and horses safe. Thanks to OD farrier Shane for fixing Strell's hoof and going above and beyond to help her feel her best. Thank you to ride vets Dr. Reames and Dr. Lewis for the extra attention for Strell and collaboration with her care team at home.

This spring's Maryland Hunter Pace Circuit started on Easter weekend and ran through Mother’s Day weekend. A variety of Clarity's Feral Seniors and Feral Juniors chaosed, chose violence, looked cute, laughed, jumped, galloped, tailgated, played swapsie ponies, and generally enjoyed ourselves across 6 different courses. We placed several times, but couldn't hold together the same team long enough (or at all) to earn season standings. What we lack in consistency, we make up for in fun!

Thank you to Marlborough Hunt, Goshen Hounds, Potomac Hunt, New Market Middletown Valley Hounds, Carrolton Hounds and Howard County Iron Bridge Hounds for hosting!

Sheda's time *IS* optimum time.

Foxcatcher Endurance 2026 at Fair Hill International gave the beautiful (warm) spring weather we were hoping for on Easter Weekend. The only endurance ride in Maryland, we packed up the crew and headed to Fair Hill on Friday where we met up with Clarity friend Sam and Ray’s cousin Bliss as well as Holly Corcoran’s Trilithon on loan for Skylar to take in the LD. We set up camp, had a lovely pre-ride, and enjoyed the company of friends and the luxury of later start times.

First out on trail was our Endurance crew of Jesseanne on Estrella and junior Olivia on Taxi. Still working on post-surgery recovery, Jesseanne led our Endurance teams out with the goal of a relaxed ride for the 50-mile course. An hour later Elizabeth on Ray and junior Skylar on Trilithon made up Team 6-year-olds for the 25-mile LD ride. Finally, Brenda with Mic, Katie and Chip, and Sam on Bliss finished up their brunch and hit the trail for the Intro ride.

Endurance Team made it through the 25-mile vetting and headed out to the second loop riding strong. Our 6-year-olds put their noggins together for both laps of the LD having a grand time with Elizabeth and Skylar, tying for 21st out of 45 riders and finishing with great vet cards. Meanwhile the Intro riders went out opting for the longer 12.5-mile option. Bliss had the BEST TIME EVER proving that she shares the family endurance genetics with Ray. We were all busy eating bonbons after finishing when our endurance pairs came in for their last vet check. Unfortunately, Estrella was uncharacteristically struggling and it quickly became apparent that she was cramping in the hind end. We massaged, electrolyted, and hydrated her but ultimately did not send her back out.

Luckily, Chip and Katie still had room in their fun-o-meter and tacked back up to supervise Olivia and Taxi’s last loop. Olivia met up with Young Rider and friend Madison and the pair rode in together with Chippy keeping an eye from the rear.

Thank you to Clarity crew Jazmin, Jessica, and Gwynn for keeping us in PBJs. Thanks to FHI and the Foxcatcher team for hosting. Thank you to Holly Corcoran for sharing Trilithon with us!

Clarity's 2026 distance season got off to a good start at Rabbit Run in March. After a harsh winter limiting conditioning time, our team decided to ease into things with a combo Intro/LD in the NJ Pine Barrens.

Team Captain Jesseanne, mostly rehabbed from shoulder surgery, took the smooth ride on GAIT alumna Christa for the 30 mile LD. Elizabeth took everyone's favorite distance mule Trixie out for her first official LD ride. Rachel, being the the smartest of our group, decided to ride the 15 mile Intro with Bonnie and live to walk another day. Taxi, Olivia, and Steve! led us in the second loop to a successful completion all around.

Thanks to Gwynn and Audrey for crewing. A huge thank you to the NJTRA volunteers and vets for helping Trixie have a successful outing.

On March 1st Dressage teammates Lainey and Shannon, along with their trusty steeds Sammy and Harley, showed in the rescheduled Clarksville PVDA Valentineʼs Day themed show at Stonebrook Farm as part of the Clarksville Chapterʼs winter schooling show series. Coach Katie called this show “Februmarch!” Indeed, the calendar suggested we should be thinking about St. Patrickʼs Day, but love was in the air. Donning their best Valentineʼs Day attire, the two teammates, as well as coaches Katie and Elizabeth, had beautiful weather for show day.

Shannon and Harley got the fun started with their musical freestyle. Pumped to rock out, Harley was super energetic and the pair scored a 62.19%, besting their score from the January show. Next, Lainey and Sammy took their turn in the sandbox. The dynamic duo was performing a beautiful Training 1 test when the judge rang them out! Apparently, the judge mistook Lainey for another rider and thought she was doing the wrong test. Not even phased by the mix up, Miss Lainey started her test over again and scored a fantastic 60.57% and earned a pink ribbon that fitted in quite nicely with her Valentineʼs Day costume. As for Sammy and Harley, they enjoyed a round of carrots!

Huge thanks to Clarksville PVDA for working around EHV quarantines, very uncooperative weather, and multiple reschedule to host our favorite fun winter series! Thanks to teammates Shoshana and Quentin, with Ladybird in tow, for coming to provide moral support and lots of cheer!

When life gives you Snowcrete, go to Florida.

Distance Team members Elizabeth and Skylar fled south this February to find the sunshine at Gator Run Endurance Benefit Ride at Goethe State Forest in north Florida. We headed down a few days early to acclimate to the sunshine (critical) and enjoyed time with Clarity family Corky and Ann. Friday, we headed to Goethe to meet up with Mykayla Corgnell and her Mustang horses. Skylar was mounted on MC Geo’s Odyssey, Elizabeth on MC What’s the Big Dill, and Mykayla on MC Downtown Blues. We vetted in, had a pre-ride to get to know our Mustangs, and caught up with some other northeast endurance friends fleeing the cold.

Saturday morning, team Mustang headed out on trail with a bonus junior rider on his Mustang Ragnar. We had a fun and quick first loop followed by an easy vetting. The next loop took us through dry swamp and more pine and palmetto forest. By the last loop our poor northern riders were having regrets about doing 50 miles cold turkey, but our wonderful Mustangs carried us through to completions all around! Post ride we headed to stay with more friends of Clarity, Cathy and Chuck.

Sunday we took the obligatory trip to Ocala to shop at WEC and watch some 2* show jumping. Our riders stretched their legs and counted turtles and gators at Rainbow River and then Monday we enjoyed water therapy with the manatees at Crystal River. We stopped off to see Ann one more time and then unfortunately did not miss our flight back to Winteryland.

Thank you Ann and Corky for the pool, hospitality, and loan of camp supplies. Thanks Cathy and Chuck for the post-ride showers, chow, and trip to Ocala. Huge thank you to Mykayla Corgnell for sharing her wonderful Mustangs with us! Thanks to Jessica for crewing and driving. It’s a hard job, but someone had to come to Florida to supervise us! Thanks to Connie Caudill and the Gator Run team!

Five of Clarity’s Dressage Team members rang in 2026 at the Clarksville PVDA January show. On a lovely Sunday morning, the dressage gang and four horses –Ophelia, Estrella, Mic and Harley – made it to beautiful Stonebrook Farm with coach Lauren.

Rebecca and Strelly started our team in First 1 and Training 1. Although Strell prefers endurance races to the frou-frou of the sandbox, she was a good girl and Rebecca rode well as always! Next, Jasmine and Ophelia strutted their stuff in First 2, scoring an impressive 66.51%! Then, mom Sarah took the reins for First 3, had a lovely trip, and netted a 64.72%! Ophelia, looked stunning as always in her element in the dressage ring with Jasmine and Sarah’s winter-festive braid job. Alissa and Mic had a good warmup and executed nice test elements continuing to add trips down centerlines to their experience in Training 2. Finally, Shannon and Harley dusted off their First Level Freestyle to score a 61.55%.

Every horse was good and every rider did their job. Well done, team!

Thanks to Clarksville PVDA for hosting!

Our 2025 competition season wrapped up at Gobble till you Wobble Endurance Ride in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio while celebrating Elizabeth’s November birthday weekend. Having ridden quite a bit of north and east Appalachia, we packed up our 50-mile horses and headed over the continental divide to see what the other side of the mountains look like.

Elizabeth and Taxi led the pack of 50-mile riders out onto trail for the first loop. The terrain rolled through woods with lots of nice places to canter. Taxi covered the ground easily coming to each vet hold in good timing. The first two loops through the Wayne National Forest showed off late season foliage, Appalachian skyline, and cool weather. The last loop rode closer to camp by and through ‘rock house’ cave formations. These dramatic sandstone cliff overhangs and shelters historically provided refuge for Indigenous peoples, outlaws, and early settlers. After three beautiful loops, Taxi and Elizabeth completed the ride in 6th place overall. Meanwhile our black pony power duo of Jesseanne and Estrella with Olivia and Sheriff moved steadily through the ride. Pony legs couldn’t keep up with Taxi, but the pair finished with great vet scores tied for 14th out of 29 starters.

After a gorgeous ride to end our 2025 distance season with our amazing horses, we settled in to eat our weight in the Thanksgiving potluck put on by ride management.

Thank you to Elkins Creek Horse Camp and Gobble ride management and vets for the hospitality. Thank you to ADM Horse Feeds and Farmer’s Cooperative Association for keeping our horses gobbling throughout the year.

One last time down centerline for 2025 with Fireball and Elizabeth at the Fall PVDA show at the PG Equestrian center. For once it wasn't freezing cold for the November show, although we did get a bit rained on the second day. Our pair showed the full Small Tour earning 3rd place in Prix St. Georges on Saturday and coming in 2nd at Intermediate I on Sunday. Fireball’s quality and consistency have steadily improved over the course of the season with big improvements in the overall picture as Fireball becomes a confirmed FEI horse.

Thank you owner Jesseanne Norton for sharing the journey. Thank you to PVDA and volunteers for hosting. Thank you to ADM Horse Feeds and Farmer’s Cooperative Association for keeping Fireball at his healthiest from the inside out.
