Once, there was a king. Though he was a king without a throne, or land to roam, call home or have dominion over. He did not yet know that he was King. But his name, you already know. When Cortes came to the Bar-B- Ranch, he was young, lean to the point of meager. He didn't yet know how to be around other horses. He knew not how to play horse games, horse around, and engage in horse play. He was not yet Cortes but soon would become a Pilar, a Staple, an Icon. The first few months, he didn't know how to make friends, so he stood by himself, wishing to be a part of a group. He had come off of a truck, brought by a friend, given to us rather than conscripted to a life of rodeo or other sport. Soon, he would make up for lost time, lost language, and lost love. He romped and thundered and played horse games literally with the best of them. When our friend Daniel heard his name, he asked, "With a 'z' or an''s'? We wondered at the difference. "Z' is the Conquistador and surname, 's' means 'polite,' we thought, 'he needs all the help he can get'. . . . an ''s' it is. With politeness and 'courtesy,' finally he made friends with all the horses in the Bar-B herd. Eventually, the horses choose him as their king. Not many know that Cortes was named with an 's' after the word in Spanish that's courteous and polite. He was just that and always kept the peace, in his herd, and on his haypile. With a band of the big boys as his best friends and brothers always by his side. His past was soon behind, and this was his beautiful story to live. Many years have gone by since the first time he stepped hoof onto his forever home at Bar-B-Ranch, and this is the home where he was finally laid to rest. This story is a fairytale for all times.
Loved by all with his big, kind eyes and funny personality. Cortes helped,
and touched so many hearts. His story now is ours to keep alive. Corteous King Cortes, you will be missed.
