Happy fourth birthday to this tiny little thing! Cali's Critters I can’t believe it’s been four years! I’ll never forget crossing the PA border just as they announced it would be shut down for COVID, but thankfully you still met up with me. She couldn’t be a better pet!

Unfortunately, Stanley crossed the rainbow bridge today. The hardest part about rescuing isn’t all the mouths to feed or coping with their stories, and it’s definitely not the vet bills (although that’s a close second), it’s when you put in all the effort and see them thrive, only to have to make a hard decision down the line. Stan lived a great life, but the decision never gets any easier. I’ll miss you, buddy. Hopefully you’re climbing in duvet covers, hiding in underwear drawers, and sprinting your way up tapestries in lizard heaven💕

It absolutely breaks my heart to post this. Edna passed away this morning.

I got Edna in November of 2019. I had wanted a beardie for quite awhile, and a guy desperately wanted to offload Edna. His friend had given this sweet boy up. Clearly, I was NOT good at sexing reptiles, so he was named Edna. Then I found out he was male. However, he was named for the mom in Hairspray who is often played by a man, so it worked out. He has been my right hand man for years. He became a popular favorite in downtown Frederick. Always happy to swim in the canal, eat grass in Baker Park, and people watch outside the Starbucks on Market Street. He and Hercules were my reason to start the Dragon Wagon, as I’d pull them through downtown in a wagon. Everyone who met Edna loved him! I’ll never forget his hilarious climbing skills.

I have no way of knowing how old he was, or what happened, but I hope he knows how loved he was in his time on Earth. Hopefully he’s enjoying the dubia roaches in the sky. I love you, Edna.

My pandemic baby is 3!! Thank you so much Cali’s Critters for this sweet girl. Louisa was a couple weeks old when we got her. Pennsylvania had just shut down their border due to covid an hour before we went to get her. And yet, we went anyway. Thank goodness we did, because I can’t imagine my life without Weeza, Weez-bear, Weezy pants… 11/10 greatest lizard ever!

I recently rescued a chameleon who had been abused at pet store. She unfortunately needs a tongue amputation which is $400+, plus medications to ease the pain. I’ve started a gofundme to get this surgery done as soon as possible. Anything helps!

While I can’t sleep, here’s an update on the crew! Maple has started to fall asleep in her dishes, and Robert was so jealous of the attention she got that he started falling asleep in weird ways too! He’s been on a calcium oral medication for a few days and his tremors have gone down a lot. Dr thinks he may lose them completely! His mobility has also gotten a lot better, which is unfortunate because he doesn’t just sit and snuggle anymore. This goes to show that just a little extra care is all a rescue needs, so please rescue when you can!

In the past two days, we welcomed Sammy and Robert into the family! Some of you might remember Remy, my wild caught Blue Tongue Skink. I gave her to a better home as it wasn’t feasible to move with a 100 gallon tank and an already stressed lizard. I loved her though, so I started looking again. I found Charlie at first, and went home with him instead, but unfortunately Charlie was meant to be in little lizard heaven. So, I went back to to see their new baby halmahera bts. Sam caught my eye immediately! I fell in love and immediately took him home. But when I saw Charlie two weeks ago, they also introduced me to Robert. And when I purchased Sam, I felt incredibly guilty about not leaving with Robert. Then, my mom said the meanest thing to me: that he might need me. And I agreed. MRC clearly cares so greatly for their animals, but nothing compares to a forever home. I called to see if Robert was there, and sure enough, nobody had adopted this sweet little guy. So here I am, two lizards and an empty wallet later, happier than I ever could be.

The flip side to what I do is that rescue isn’t always fun. Unfortunately Charlie had a major seizure this morning and he did not make it through. Sometimes, the toll life takes on these animals is just too great and mother nature takes them sooner to end their suffering. Charles the Distinguished Gentleman was dealt a very poor hand in life, and while I was not able to do much, at least I made him comfortable these last few days. I love you Charlie💕

In celebration of ending my freshman year of college, I decided to purchase a blue tongue skink, as I’ve strongly missed Remy. I met the greatest skink ever, but unfortunately it was JUST out of my price range. The lovely employee helping me let me know that they’ve recently acquired many special needs lizards, and I just had to see them. Meet Charles the Distinguished Gentleman, a zero bearded dragon with MBD legs! Many of you may remember Margie who was strongly admired for teaching others about reptile disability, but unfortunately she passed last year. Charlie here will hopefully continue the amazing work she did in education others on the importance of thoroughly researching reptile care. Also, take a look at my desk-tank! Useful for when I want a lizard to hang out with me but I can’t focus too hard on keeping them contained.

Meet Maple! She’s only two months old, but she’s an absolute beauty! She has the hypomelanistic and translucent genes, so she might have them show up in a future baby! It’ll be a year and a half before I can even consider breeding, but I’m excited about the idea of it!

We had an egg laying session! Unfortunately none of them are fertile, however that’s common for a first clutch. Weeza has been having so much fun with all of the extra food she’s getting. We have to keep her calcium up to replenish all that she lost. I’m so proud though. 22 eggs and she stayed healthy the whole time. Wish us luck for round 2! Also stay tuned for a Christmas eve post tonight!

We welcomed a baby red-eared slider to the family this week. We’ve been living it up in Florida! Ollie has been such a snuggle bug, Edna is grumpy as ever, and Ray doesn’t really know that anything has changed.

Haven’t posted in awhile, but I had to put down Margie. I’ve finally come to accept it, knowing I made the best decision I possibly could. Meanwhile, the other lizards have made their move to florida! Ray stayed behind to keep me company, but the others are thriving in the gorgeous weather!

Another successful snake relocation! This lovely milk snake was causing some problems in a townhouse development, so we caught him and gently released him where he’d be happy and safe. Remember, we do this for free, so please contact us for any reptile removal!
