🐩Is your puppy excited when they see another person (regardless if they know the person or not!)?
🐩Most puppies are social butterflies and LOVE interacting with new people. And most people love interacting with new puppies. Combine that together and it’s the perfect recipe to make a people obsessed, crazy, jumping, mouthing puppy 😬 making it more and more challenging for YOU to be able to handle your puppy around other people and take your puppy places.
🐩If you don’t have rules around your pups interactions you can most definitely end up with a future training project that can take a while to fix. It’s better to apply your rules from the very beginning!
❌Don’t allow your puppy to pull you up to people for greetings or petting.
❌Communicate your expectations to the person that will be interacting with your pup… if they can’t follow simple instructions then no interaction.
✅Waiting for the puppy to be calm and able to focus on YOU (the most important person) is 🔑.
✅If your puppy is focused on you then they are not pulling towards the other person and we have a better chance for the puppy to focus on keeping 4 feet on the floor (no jumping) and not mouthing.
✅Remind the person letting not to get too excited or overwhelming for your pup.
✅Keep your greeting short and call your puppy away and make sure to reward!

How do we teach a puppy NOT to jump on and climb all over your guests? Should you just ignore the puppy? Ignoring a puppy could work but some pups are so big and strong already (and growing!) that that’s not a safe option.
The more your puppy rehearses the jumping and climbing behavior, the better he gets! Practice makes for perfect, right?!
During this exercise we have the puppy on a leash to prevent him from running up to and jumping on the guest (me). We could also use use a playpen and have the puppy in his playpen instead of using the leash… use what is realistic for YOU.
1. Wait for the puppy to relax ON HIS OWN. Don’t tell him what to do.
2. Once the pup relaxes, get his attention and then point to the person he can greet and tell him “say hi!”. The person greeting should stay calm and reach down to the pet the puppy.
3. After 3-4 seconds (keep it short!) the person holding the leash should call the puppy back to them and give a reward! The pup should easily leave the guest, not be obsessed with them.
4. Repeat a few times. And practice with family and friends that come over.
❌ I never force or make the puppy greet a person. If you tell the puppy to say hi and they don’t want to THATS FINE!
❌I don’t make dogs sit for greetings. I’ll tell you why later in a separate video.

When you have a two dog/ multiple dog household it’s important to teach each individual dog each skill you want them to know and once they are consistent SOLO, then you work them together.
These Frenchie sisters are in our board & train program and are doing so great!

Place Training PART 4
The thing you didn’t know you wanted your dog to know!
I love the place exercise for MANY reasons and use it often. IMO the place exercise is much easier for a dog to learn and MAINTAIN. Everyone wants their dog to learn STAY but that’s actually pretty difficult when taught correctly. STAY should mean “stay in the position I asked you to do and don’t move until released”. This means a dog can’t MOVE OR CHOOSE during that exercise. This leads to a lot of dogs actually avoiding doing the exercise or finishing/ breaking prematurely.
PLACE will mean “go to the spot and stay on it until released”. Place is something your dog can touch, smell, see. They can also choose their position when on it so this means your dog will do what THEY are comfortable doing and maintain the place comfortably, happily and longer. It’s a great exercise for puppies to learn and less stressful.
I do NOT use their dog bed, crate or anything that is left out 24/7 for PLACE. I believe this is confusing for a lot of dogs and the place loses its value. The PLACE should be a novelty. Special. Something your dog only sees sometimes. This will keep it very valuable to your dog. I recommend using something that is big enough to fit your dog comfortably (in this training video we started with a bath mat but it wasn’t big enough so we switched to a yoga mat cut in 1/2). It can be flat on the floor (I like something with traction underneath) or raised like a cot bed.

Three things my child is NOT allowed to do because I’m a dog trainer (and trust me, once you’ve seen a dog bite to the face, you won’t want your kid doing these either) 🐶👇🏼
❌ Never let children sit, stand, step on, lay on, etc a dog. Dogs are not furniture or toys. You may have the most tolerant dog in the world but there could be that one day he’s in pain and that could be the day something awful happens…
❌Do not allow children to take things from a dog. It doesn’t matter if your dog allows you to take things. Children have no business walking up to a dog and taking things from them. If something needs to be taken from a dog (and the dog does not know drop it) an adult can do it.
❌ Do not allow children to kiss, hug a sleeping dog (and even awake for that matter) or startle a dog awake. Dogs can be reactive when startled, just like humans.
When I make post like these I always have some people in the comments saying things like “my dog knows better.” “My dog would never bite!” Etc.
All dogs can bite when put in the wrong situation.
In my dog bite cases regarding children, those parents also thought their dog would never bite. They didn’t purposely place their child in a situation to be bitten. They didn’t just allow an aggressive dog to roam around their home with their children. They didn’t know about creating boundaries around kids and dogs… it’s that simple.
AND REMEMBER…
IF YOU LIKE YOUR KIDS FACE, GIVE THE DOG SPACE! (Merch dropping soon!)
Part 2 coming soon!

➡️Does your puppy take FOREVER to go potty on a walk or goes out, doesn’t potty and then comes back inside and has an accident?➡️Before walking your puppy I suggest teaching him to POTTY FIRST. This way he isn’t distracted the whole time and forgetting to go. ➡️This is also something I do if the puppy has a large yard.➡️Stand still, don’t walk, don’t talk, don’t move around. The puppy can go around you and use the space you’re standing in to potty. This will help the puppy concentrate on their Doo-Ty 😏 ❌SAY NO to other people or dogs coming up to your puppy while he is working on going potty.👏🏻✨As soon as the puppy finishes throw him a party and then head out on your walk 🐶😄 I promise this is a SUPER convenient trick to teach the pup, especially if you have a limited potty space in the future, need a puppy to potty fast or are traveling.•••#puppytraining #puppytrainer #puppies #newpuppy #dogmom #dogdad #pups #puppyoftheday #puppytrainingtips #puppytraining101 #puppytrainingclass #puppy #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogs #dogoftheday #pottytraining #pottytrainingtips #pottytrainingboys #pottytrainingproblems #pottytraininggirls #doggo #fyp
👉🏼Does your dog understand that an open door is not an invitation to run out? It’s never too early (or too late!) to start teaching manners around open doors. One of the top complaints I get from new clients is their dog will bolt out doors and that is a dangerous habit to have!
👉🏼Making sure your dog understands door boundaries is extremely important!
👉🏼Self control at door ways should be a huge priority when you’re training your puppy or new dog. And it’s not hard to do!
⭐️When we train this implied wait when the door is opened I want Kobe to “hit his breaks” when he reaches his boundary (which is indicated by the red line). He can stand, sit or lie down at his boundary… its his choice. During this game we will not release him out the door at all when he is off leash. We will teach him to ONLY go out the door once his leash is on and he is invited (released).

Teaching a dog to come when called consistently takes some work! So why RUIN all that training by doing something silly?
I often see people do things that accidentally ruin their dogs training. One common mistake when a dog comes when called is the person will take away the dogs freedom. If you tell your dog to come to you and then grab the dog to bring the dog inside the dog will start to associate COMING TO YOU with a negative consequence. In the future when you ask your dog to come to you they will be second guessing what will happen when they get to you and you may start to notice slower response, avoidance, your dog keeping away from you, your dog coming to you and running away immediately, your dog not coming at all anymore, etc.
Instead, teach your dog a separate game like the one in this video. We started teaching Grace to GO INSIDE when she was around 12 weeks old. She can go back inside the house on her own… no need to come to us first and no need to grab her.

💥The place exercise has SOOOO many uses!
👉🏼Different trainers teach place differently and have different rules… it can be confusing. Here are MY rules for “place”.
✅Place is NOT their bed or crate. It’s something that is put out when in use and taken away when not used. Their bed or crate is left out 24/7 and has no rules. It’s hard for a some dogs to remember when they got on the bed on their own or try to remember if you told them to get on and stay on it. By having a different “place” you eliminate this confusion.
👉🏼Having a dog do an auto place away from the door is also a lot less tempting for some dogs.
✅The pup can do anything she wants in place as long as she stays on it. There is not a certain position to maintain. This is why I love teaching it to puppies because it’s easier than a “stay”. Stay means DONT MOVE OUT OF THE POSITION OR SPOT I PUT YOU IN.
✅The only way off place is by getting released.
In this video we were working on throwing the place down on the floor and that is Tatum’s cue to hop on it and stay on it until released. This way we can quickly get to the door without having to set the whole training exercise up. Its a behavior that we teach the dog to do automatically. And no, I dont have to “beat” or “race” the dog to the door. It doesn’t matter where the dog is, he will go to his place wherever I choose to throw it down.
⭐️Place is a great way to prevent your dog from jumping/ climbing on guests when they enter and stop running out the door!

Steve is such a cool guy 🐶✨ look at him fly ✨
Training CAN be all fun and games if you want!

5 things I don’t regret teaching my 13 year old dog when he was a puppy 🥹❤️🐶
1. Manners in public. Taking time to train him in different places and work on proper socialization and exposure training while he was young has made such a difference in his life. He’s a pleasure anywhere he goes and easy to travel with.
2. Tricks. This may not seem important but teaching tricks is so good for building a fun working relationship. He enjoys learning new things at any age! Practicing his tricks and obedience helps keep his mind sharp ✨☀️
3. Working with other people. He’s a good listener no matter who he is with. This has made it easy for others to watch him if he didn’t travel with me and has made him a great animal actor!
4. How to self entertain appropriately and be okay with being left alone. He uses his chew toys and bones and doesn’t stress out when a person isn’t home with him.
5. Social skills with children and other animals. When he was a puppy I didn’t have a child of my own and wasn’t normally around children so I made an effort to make sure he was well exposed (this doesn’t mean a bunch of kids were always just petting him). I also made sure to let him see other species of animals and worked on his manners around them. Most animals are very relaxed around him since he isn’t fixated on them and trying to invade their personal space.
If you’re going to be spending many years with an animal, taking the time and putting in the effort to work with them when they are young can make such a difference in your bond and relationship.
This dog is my best friend and I’m so happy he’s still going strong and enjoying his life and opportunities ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Slip lead disclaimer: slip leads are fine used on trained dogs that do not pull. We also use them as a back up leash for nervous dogs that may be able to slip their harness or leash. We also use them in animal acting and agility for quick on and off.
👉🏼Coming when called is a super important exercise for your pup to learn! Even if you don’t teach or reinforce anything else, this should be the one command/ cue that you do l!
👉🏼You can play this game alone or with another person (or even a few people!).
1. Wait for your pup to get distracted with something or someone. NOTE: you can play this game inside or outside. When playing the out of sight version make sure to only play in a safe and secure area.
2. Say their name FIRST!
3. Once they turn to see who called them say “COME!” And drop your hand down if your puppy can see you. If your puppy is looking for you you can repeat yourself every few seconds to help them.
4. When your puppy is coming to you get REALLY excited and be generous with the treats! Use a super special good treat to work in this (we were using chicken and freeze dried meal toppers in this video).
4. Once the puppy is rewarded ignore them and let then get distracted again or the next person playing the game can call them.
5. Don’t do too many reps! You want to keep this word and game a “hot ticket item” in your pups training. Don’t over do or over use! I try to keep reps 2-6x depending on the dog and their motivation level.
What to see how to advance this or have questions?

💦🐶 Does your dog urinate when they get excited? Thats actually pretty common (and yes, I understand it can be annoying with the constant clean ups or outfit changes).
Excited urinating doesnt mean a dog isnt potty trained. Dogs that pee out of excitement dont even know its happening… they just lose control. Kind of like peeing a little when you sneeze or laugh too hard. You cant, and shouldn’t, correct this. That can make it worse. Instead remain neutral when you see your dog, have some yummy snacks or a few toys your dog likes and toss those to your dog immediately as a distraction. If your dog knows simple obedience or tricks you can ask them to do a few things for you when they seem focused on the treats or toys and not so excited about you any more.
I suggest taking yiur dog outside for a pee break right after (again, remaining neutral) and once your dog has emptied that bladder some go ahead and give some more attention.
Tag a friend that wants to start keeping their floors and clothes pee pee free 💦🐶

Here are 3 BIG mistakes puppy owners make when teaching their pup leash manners:
🚫1. Allowing their puppy to pull them up to other dogs.
🚫2. Allowing their puppy to pull them up to anything to investigate or anything they are too excited about (could be dead animals, toxic items, unknown trash, etc.)
🚫3. Allowing their puppy to pull them up to other people.
It’s important to Stop doing those three things when teaching your puppy to walk nicely on leash. If your puppy is constantly pulling you towards something and they get to whatever it is, example, another dog and then the two dogs start playing, that’s reinforcement to your puppy and the next time they are out you’ll get the same if not worse pulling when your puppy sees something they want!
Make sure to use plenty of great treats when you first start teaching nice walking. You have ti give your puppy incentive to want to walk with you. Pay attention to them. Talk. Let your puppy know they are doing a great job!
NOTE: The key word here is PULL. I allow pups to sniff, investigate, greet people occasionally BUT being crazy, pulling and ignoring the person holding the leash isn’t how to get those things.
This is also not a discussion on HOW you should walk your dog. Regardless of how you walk your dog the same rules should apply.
Like, share and follow to stay up to date on new videos 🐶
