All our puppies have found new homes. We'll have a few pictures/ clips of them in their new lives over the next few weeks, but the biggest part of our journey is over.

So many big days! Yesterday was a huge day for humans (75th birthday in the family) and puppies start going to forever homes this week. We're ramping up their exposure to various things and I'll do my best to get a few pictures!

Today's intended post is going to be of the puppies' big ears and rumply faces. Their skin is growing so much right now that when they look down they get all Bassett Hound-y. Sadly, as you probably noticed, I'm taller than they are (a situation I'm not really used to) so I have to work out angles etc. Wish me luck!

Today's post is hopefully going to be the puppies in their deep water trough, but it's not yet hot enough outside for them to do it. It will be in an hour or so, so give us time 🥰

On our way out into the wilderness to test the puppies' prey drive! Which is a clever way of saying we're going to show the puppies some birds and see what they think. There will be video later, but right now they're singing the songs of their people pretty loudly... Don't think they're thrilled about moving vehicles.

We still have a couple of darling, very social babies looking for the right homes. Not the two legged puppies, they are already claimed. A few of the four legged ones need permanent people in their lives. Please share and help get the word out.

I know he's not a puppy (he's 11!) But I couldn't resist. Our Ries has taken up needlepoint.

Edit: I'm a bad person and I feel bad (both for not knowing this beautiful boy's age, and for leading you astray). He's only 9. But his stitching is exquisite regardless.

Before and after, grey fluffy not-elephant for scale. Once upon a time (two weeks ago) their indoor pen was big enough to scare them. Now they're hulking out of it.

Since the puppies are weaning, they get four full meals a day. Today is the first day we changed their evening meal time (making it a little later than usual) and while I'm definitely always popular with this lot, this is something else! Also, sorry I turned the camera upside down at the end there, I'm really not very pro at all this stuff!

Introducing our puppies! They have litterbox names so we can call them something other than “the one with a spot on its bum, no not that one, the one with the big spot and the floppy ears, no not him, the other one. Yeah, him.” Based on a great suggestion we named them after British counties. Some have kept the full name, while others (such as Buckinghampshire) have been shortened for convenience. Information about each puppy is in the caption for their picture.

By 4 weeks, their universe is radically increasing. Puppies are quite resilient during this period. Our goal for the next four weeks is to introduce them to as many different experiences as possible. They now have both indoor and outdoor play areas, exposing them to a minimum of 7 different underfoot textures, vinyl flooring , carpet, dirt, concrete, brick, wood, metal grate, water, grass, as well as puppy p*e pads. People of all shapes, sizes, ages, wearing hats, sun glasses, smelly (sweaty) clothes, clean clothes, carrying canes, and other assorted big sticks, (brooms, mops,) are invited in to interact positively with the pups.

Today we clipped nails, socialized and totally wore ourselves out (humans, not puppies. The puppies are only worn out for fifteen minutes then they're ready to rock), so the planned "daily dose" with a couple of *aggressively* adorable puppies napping on a neighbor will have to wait until tomorrow (we'll try to make it the morning post). Hopefully these will tide you over in the meantime:

Early socialization and handling is critical to a dog’s well adjustment for life. We take this responsibility very seriously. At birth, a pups eyes and ears are closed. They find their mom in the whelping box by sense of smell, and the awareness of body warmth. Handling is already important for helping develop their nervous systems. Puppies are weighed twice a day to ensure all are gaining weight, toe nails are trimmed, and feet handled. After their eyes and ears open at roughly 12-14 days, they become more aware of their surroundings, but can still only see well less than @ 8-12 inches, and the information has little meaning initially. They toddle around the whelping box, bumping into each other, their soft toys, and their bell ball. This is what I call their “drunken Guinea pig” stage.

Happy four-week-iversary to our eight baby GSPs!
Born to Lily, CH V. D. Nacht’s Lily of the Valley, JH FDC CGC, and Parker, GCHS CH Siegervale’s Slightly Notorious in Davis, California, on June 3rd 2023, we have eight bundles of joy.
3 boys and 5 girls, and their personalities are emerging daily.

Meet CH Von Der Nacht's Lily of the Valley. Granddaughter of GCH V.D.Nacht's Classic Beaujolais MH, ROM and of GCH Stelor's Royalty Remembered; daughter of GCH CH V.D.Nacht's Koka Kone Java Jive Sh, and GCHS DC Robin Crest Double EE Shoot to thrill MH.

Lily's career began in showing, winning her 17 points despite limitations imposed by Covid restrictions. When not in the show ring she pursued hunt training (her first true love) and quickly accomplished her Junior Hunter Title, and has begun work on her Senior Hunter Title. As she matured she began training as a service dog, her sweet temperament and intelligence making her ideally suited as a supportive companion. Her most recent accomplishment is her delivery of eight fine, healthy puppies (now 4 weeks old - see our next post for more details!).
