“You’re a midwife-I bet you hold babies all the time!”

Many of our clients are so surprised when we tell them that we don’t hold our client’s babies very often! This is because we see our role as being a supporter of your process-you have been the one carrying your baby, growing your baby, and birthing your baby. You have 1000% earned every single sacred snuggle with your sweet little one!

It’s also not lost on us that in our western culture, there is a huge focus on “holding the baby” after birth versus “holding the mother”. And while the babies absolutely go through their own journey during pregnancy and birth, they are receiving the care and love they need from their mother. But the mother also needs and deserves this same love and care while healing from birth.

All of this being said, this makes it all the more special when clients ask us to hold their babies. Here is Midwife Ady with a beloved client’s baby!

Now that we’ve got your attention with this amazing mug (courtesy of one our dear clients), did you know that your postpartum care with Birthstream Midwifery Service includes lactation support? Establishing a good supply depends on proper milk removal, which means that a baby’s latch is essential.

Each of our midwives has lactation support experience and can help you troubleshoot any issues. Early on, it’s quite normal for there to be an adjustment period where you and baby are figuring things out. But if you need a helping hand, we got you!

What does a prenatal visit entail? Part 2.

We plan for the birth! We talk about how/if you would like to catch your own baby, and talk you and your family through the process of birth at home.

We bring you your birth tub to your 37 week appointment and give you clear instructions on how to fill your tub for your Birth Day.

We revisit your Transfer Plan so we are clear on which hospital we will be going to in the event of a home-to-hospital transfer. We include your older children and partners in your appointments (as much as you would like!)

We include your older children and partners in your appointments (as much as you would like!)

Overall, there is a LOT that goes into prenatal care visits with your midwives! We hope this helps to demystify the prenatal care process.

“Where do you guys go after a birth?”

It may make our clients smile to know that we midwives really like eachother! If we are leaving a birth when the sun is up, you will definitely find us out to eat. We are foodies and love trying new restaurants while coming down from the “birth high”. There’s also something so triumphant about tucking a new mother/baby in after a birth, and leaving to celebrate over a meal! Check out Midwife Lesley enjoying her huevos rancheros! heart

Preparing for Postpartum Part 2 (Check out our previous post for Part 1)

You might prepare some nourishing meals and freeze them ahead in microwave-safe containers! This might be soups or roasts with lots of veggies and proteins.

Order your breast pump in advance, IT’S FREE!(Your Birthstream Midwife can write a prescription for one.) It’s a good idea to have it, just in case you experience a situation where you are not able to latch your baby for a feeding.

Lastly, start thinking about postpartum planning early! It might be a good idea to have conversations with your support circle in advance, so you can get an idea of who will be available to help.

It often occurs to us that while we may see this image frequently, few people get the opportunity to see a baby still attached to her placenta. We practice routine delayed cord clamping, meaning that this photo was taken just prior to performing a full newborn exam, which was close to 2 hours after the birth. This is after the baby and her new parents have had the opportunity to experience the Golden Hour after birth of undisturbed skin-to-skin and to initiate breastfeeding. It was also long after the baby received all of the blood she needed from her placenta.

Midwifery care prioritizes this sacred time, as there is no rush to get through routine newborn care procedures.

~Feel free to check out our post on the Golden Hour after birth if this is a new term to you!

What does a prenatal visit with a midwife entail? Part 1.

We have conversations about prenatal testing such as bloodwork and ultrasounds that are common in pregnancy. We focus on providing true informed consent and individualized care

We talk about your fears, hopes for this pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period.

We also discuss how you are feeling mentally and emotionally. We may also focus on how you are eating, sleeping, and how your baby is moving in your belly.

Ultimately, we believe that prenatal care is what you do, not what we do! We are here to support you in making choices that are right for you and your family.

To be continued! You can see why 1-hour visits are quite common for midwifery care visits.

What is the “Golden Hour”?

The “Golden Hour” is the first hour after you give birth to your baby. It is considered to be an optimal time to initiate breastfeeding and to delay standard newborn care procedures during this time.

That sounds good-what is the benefit?

The benefit is that one can use this time to start skin-to-skin contact with baby and help ‘unlock’ the baby’s biological hardwiring to find the breast and initiate the first feed aka the ‘breast crawl’. It is also the time when baby is most alert immediately after giving birth and most inclined to attempt nursing on their own. Research also tells us that a baby’s temperature and blood sugars remain more stable when skin-to-skin contact is implemented.

Great. How do I make this Golden Hour happen?

The Golden Hour is engrained in midwifery immediate postpartum care. If you aren’t sure what your maternity care provider’s typical immediate postpartum care looks like, be sure to ask them and advocate for yourself! You don’t have any options if you don’t know what your options are.

Who should I have at my birth?

This is a question that we often hear. And the answer may look different from person to person! Essentially, the people at your birth should be people you trust, who believe in you, and aren’t afraid of the birth process. We often say that these are people you should feel comfortable p**ping in front of! Birth is just that vulnerable, and yes, sometimes there may be some p**p involved.

Another thing we do sometimes notice is that a “watched pot doesn’t boil”, meaning that you shouldn’t feel like you are being “observed” during labor and birth. The people who you invite should have a reason for being there (take photos, rub your back, cheer you on, and/or make sure your partner is taken care of, etc).

Ultimately, the decision is left up to the you! Of course you also need to keep in mind that hospitals or birthing centers may have their own caps on how many people are allowed in a labor room at a time. We are a homebirth practice and do not place caps on how many people are allowed in the room for a labor/birth!

Part 1: How do I prepare for the postpartum period?

Look around you, which people make up your support system? This might look different from person to person, but it may include your partner, your parents, their parents, siblings, friends, and coworkers.

Consider the “help” that you might need. You might ask a loved one to set up a meal train for at least the first few days postpartum.

If you have a social circle that is throwing you a baby shower, maybe consider pool going towards a postpartum doula or home cleaning on your registry!

To be continued in Part 2.

What does a midwife *do* at my birth?

The answer to this question is so complex! But it can look different, depending on the needs of the laboring person and how the birth unfolds. What it typically can look like is:

A midwife watching, waiting, and listening..to you, your sounds & your baby’s heartbeat intermittently.

Guiding you to follow your body’s cues with position changes, emptying your bladder often, drinking fluids, eating nourishing foods, and resting as needed.

Serving as a “guardian of normal” during the birth of your baby, taking your vitals periodically and only intervening when medically necessary (or when you’d like us to!).

Following the birth of your baby, we fix you a post-birth snack, examine your baby at your side when are ready, and ensure that you your bleeding is well-managed and that your vitals are stable.

We also do all the clean-up and leave your house looking at least as clean as when we arrived!

~When all is well, we tuck you and baby in, and check in with you both for your your first postpartum appointment the following day!
