Faculty and staff in the Equine Medicine Service and the Equine Intensive Care Unit did a remarkable job in returning Champ to health. The 5-year-old donkey gelding presented a challenging case of masseter myodegeneration from and selenium deficiency. The rescued donkey then found his forever home after being adopted along with two other sanctuary donkeys with whom he bonded. https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/rescued-donkey-overcomes-muscular-disorder-brought-trace-mineral-deficiency

Our Equine Internal Medicine Service has a fun page to follow. Every week, they post an interesting medicine question to figure out. Give them a follow.

👀 Here’s another medicine question 😎

🤓 Evaluation of a horse’s mucous membranes (gums) can provide useful information regarding the horse’s condition. Color, capillary refill time and moistness can all be assessed 🩺

📸 The photographed mucous membranes belong to a 12-year-old mare showing signs of colic. What might this color indicate and how might this influence what you do❓

✏️The answer will be posted later this week 🤩

Our neonatal ICU is so close to reaching their fundraising goal. Please help put them over the top.

The UC Davis veterinary hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) needs your help. Newborn foals and crias are some of the most vulnerable patients at the hospital, and they can present the most challenging and complex cases in all of large animal medicine. You can help save these newborns. The NICU has been selected for the October Crowdfunding Campaign at UC Davis. We would be honored to have you help us provide the best care possible for foals and crias that need specialty care immediately after birth.
