A famous trainer the other day had a video going around about taking someone with you when purchasing a horse.
Something along the lines of helping you because when you get there you might be so in love with it that you think you need it when you really do not.

You could save yourself so much heartache by taking someone with you to look at a big purchases.
Especially if that person is more knowledgeable than you.
There’s things people forget to look at sometimes, I sell a good bit of horses and I see people not looking at the basic things.
Most of the time it’s lack of knowledge but sometimes it’s because they get so excited when they get here I think they just forget.

Teeth are a big one! It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to age a horse, look in the horses mouth and see if they have them and if they are straight. There are several deformities a horse can have in the mouth. Pictured here is the worst I’ve ever seen.

Feet, legs, conformation, eyes, hooves, attitude, etc are just some things people should look at that I don’t see them really checking out before paying for the horse.

It’s the sellers job to be honest about the horse and know the horse well enough to tell you if something is wrong or if it’s going to be a good fit for you.
It’s the buyers job to see if the horse is best suited for your end goal with the horse.

And I see a lot of people not doing their jobs….

Take a friend with you, take your trainer with you, take someone who will tell you the truth about how bad the conformation on that blue roan truly is….

If you get a horse that won’t hold up to your needs or isant trained/trainable for your end goal then you are setting you and the horse up for failure and y’all will both suffer from it.
