The other exciting new animal we added are Rheas! They’re only 5 months old right now so they will get bigger they’re both so sweet and eat right out of our hands!💛
Fun fact: they eat high protein dog food! And when they are fully mature the male rhea will sit on the females eggs!🥰

Thank you everyone who participated in our BUFF PULLET CLEARANCE and congratulations to those who scored a pullet. My condolences to those who missed out. It was hectic and all were gone within 25 minutes of the first post going up.

Sometimes when you have a reasonable size hatch, some chicks start pecking at the base of other chick’s tails or the back of wing joint. The victims are nearly always light coloured. Between 3 and 4 weeks of age, before full feathering you can see the blood in the base of light tail feathers. This is what they peck at first and they start drawing blood. The habit starts like a disease.
At 3 weeks I change brooder lights to red bulbs and that seems to prevent the cannibalism.

More non bearded white babies. Grandbabies of “Demon”. Demon is bearded and my best white boy but I wanted to get some good quality non bearded whites. I used a non bearded son over some of my best non bearded hens to get these chicks. Fingers crossed!

Well breeding season has officially finished for the 2023 season at Mill Farm. The incubator is off and the grower pens are full. Transporters are taking a break and no breeders will be available till the new year. I may be able to share some buffs and maybe whites then.
I am about to start my stint in the red suit 🎅 and just making sure birds are ready for a period of maintence and rest. Looking forward to Boxing Day 😂 and a rest myself.

I don’t often get light blues but they are so beautiful. I think this one was the second for the 2023 season and in the last batch of growers. It was from a pen with light blue boy (Bluey) and splash and blue splash girls. It’s interesting that although Bluey has a crooked toe none of his offspring have had that fault. Not all faults are genetic.
