Will you join us to help us pay off our mortgage?

Interest rates are sky-high, and most commercial loans involve adjustable-rate mortgages, which could put us at risk of paying even higher interest rates again in 5 years. With a 15-year loan, we would pay around $50,000 in interest over the life of the $80,000 loan. That's a LOT of lost program support.

Instead, we'd like to pay off the mortgage - and that's where you and this campaign can make an enormous difference! We are seeking to raise $80,000 to pay off the mortgage in full, freeing us up from a monthly payment and all of that interest. We'd like to start off strong by raising $10,000 by the end of 2023 - can you help?

Gem City Vet offers low-cost wellness care to pets in low-income families, who otherwise may not be able to afford treatment at all. With exams for $15 and vaccines starting at $8, we work hard to keep veterinary care accessible to every pet. Our clinic location has also allowed us to expand our Intake Program and take in more homeless cats directly from the public.

If a donation isn’t an option for you, you can still be a huge help to pets in Dayton by spreading the word! Share this announcement with your friends, family, and other connections - you never know who we might reach when we work together.

Cats not using the litter box can be frustrating for the humans in the home! Remember, cats don't do things out of spite. If a cat isn't using their box and is having issues with inappropriate elimination, there is something wrong that they need your help to solve. Here are the steps to take to figure out the issues and get back on track!

1. Rule out medical issues. Bring your kitty to see us, or another veterinarian, so that any medical problems could be discovered and treated.

2. If pets aren't spayed or neutered, schedule an appointment. For low cost places in Dayton, visit , , or .

3. Troubleshoot the box set up:
- is the box clean? Scoop often and dump and clean the box frequently too.
- are there enough boxes (recommend one per cat at least!)
- do they like the type of litter? Try a few!
- do they like the type of box? Covered, uncovered, tall, short?
- do they like the box placement? Quiet places with privacy are best!

4. Troubleshoot other stress in the home:
- did you recently get a new pet or human family member? They may need time to adjust.
- are there outdoor cats bothering them? Try to block their view or access.
- give them their own spaces! Their own beds and perches help give them an area of their own.
- do they have enough enrichment? Find out how they like to play!

There's so much more we couldn't cover in this post, but there are tons of details on the website! Link here to go directly to their litterbox troubleshooting guide:https://bit.ly/litterboxissues

Ear cropping has been a standard practice for some breeds, but research is coming out to share some concerns about the practice. Here's a summary of considerations from by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

⚠️ Risks:
- General anesthesia — Cropping should always be carried out under full anesthesia, which itself has associated risks.

- Postoperative Care — Dogs will experience some discomfort during healing, stretching, re-taping and bandaging, and other manipulations after surgery. Some will need their ears bandaged or taped upright for days to months, and they may be isolated from other dogs during this period.

- Potential Complications — As for any incision, cropped ears may become infected. Cropped ears may also fail to stand or have a distorted shape or position potentially leading to subsequent operations.

🏥 Reasons given for ear-cropping:
- Supposed animal benefits: Supporters of ear cropping believe that removing the ear will help reduce ear infections, however no evidence has been found to support this claim. It has also been said that it will help improve hearing, but this has not been found to be true either.

- Human benefits: People who use certain breeds for guard dogs or security feel it helps create a more intimidating image.

🩺 Many veterinary organizations, in addition to the AVMA, oppose cosmetic cropping including the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA),13 Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)14 and Australian Veterinary Association.

🚫 Cropping has been deemed unacceptable in the United Kingdom for more than a century and is currently prohibited in Australasia and most European and Scandinavian countries.

Wondering which vaccines your pet needs? We can help!

Puppies and kittens need vaccines more often while their immune systems are still being developed.

🐶 Puppies should start their DHLPP vaccine series at 8 weeks old.

🐱 Kittens should start their FVRCP vaccine series around 6 weeks old.

We recommend that adult dogs stay up to date on their DHLPP and rabies vaccines. For dogs who are frequently exposed to other dogs, we would also recommend a bordetalla (kennel cough) vaccine.

Adult cats should stay up to date on their FVRCP and rabies vaccines.

Vaccines are typically done yearly for adults, but some of them can be done every three years, with veterinary supervision. We still recommend having your cats and dogs seen yearly for wellness exams in between vaccines, to make sure that they are staying healthy and up to date and flea and heartworm prevention!

An open letter to the person who dumped cats at Gem City Vet.

Dear stranger,

On Tuesday, we got a call from our neighbor at Gem City Vet that they saw a carrier by our back door which had been there for several hours. One of our team members rushed over, on their day off, to investigate. When they got there, they found 5 kittens in one carrier and 2 appeared to be dead already. The kittens were rushed to MedVet and all 5 turned out to be alive, but two were so far gone that they had to be euthanized immediately to prevent them from suffering further. They were covered in f***s and urine so the MedVet staff kindly gave them a bath. The carrier was so filthy that it had to be thrown away.

We have no idea when you dropped them off and how long they were alone, trapped in a carrier without food or water. In your note attached to the top, you said that their owner was neglecting them but you didn’t have the time or money to help. We want you to know that we didn’t have the time or money set aside to help them either. But by dropping them on our property, we didn’t have a choice and now we’re scrambling to make plans to save the remaining three.

Their initial veterinary bills will cost at least $2,500. Blinkie will need to have his damaged eyeball removed, in addition to his neuter, and both Commander and DoorDash will need to be spayed. They all have severe Upper Respiratory Infections, ear infections, and fleas. We’ve already started them on medication and given them vaccinations. They are happy in a foster home now and have high spirits and plenty of energy.

We’re glad they will have a chance to survive; it’s our mission to someday give that opportunity to every single cat. However, this was not the right approach to help these cats and you’ve put us in a very difficult situation. We try to carefully manage how and when we take in cats so that we can be responsible with our funds and ensure we have enough to take care of all of the cats already in our programs. We did not have the money set aside for a bill like this, and now we will have to run a last minute fundraising campaign and hope that our community members are able to help us.

In the future, here are better options for you to help cats in need:
If they are being neglected, call the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, who has a humane agent responsible for cruelty and neglect cases.
Bring the cats to us at Gem City Vet during office hours. Our clinic is low-cost so that everyone can afford access to care, even those with limited income. We can help situations like this before it becomes more severe. Our exam fee is only $15 and we could have given low-cost medication or vaccinations on a schedule to work with your income.
Run an online fundraiser or ask your connections to help. We are stretched thin right now and our supporters have already consistently been helping cats in need. Your friends and family may be willing to help you directly cover costs for care.
Contact your County Commissioners. We understand that there need to be more cat programs in Montgomery County. We need help from the constituents here to share these concerns with our county officials so that they can help make changes to keep cats safe in our community.
Get kittens on wait lists for intake at Humane Society of Greater Dayton or call other rescues or shelters to see when they could take in the kittens.

We debated sharing this information, as we absolutely do not want to encourage more dumping of cats on our property. Ultimately, we couldn’t afford not to share what happened. We desperately need help to cover the unexpected medical costs to care for them and find homes for them. We have installed more cameras around the perimeter and if we see this happen again, we will report it to the authorities.

While we are angry and upset, our main intent with this post is to give you information and resources to handle this situation better in the future.

Sincerely,
Karin, Tia, Katie, Antonia, Emma, Lori, and Erica
