We had a hauntingly good time at our Spooky Snips TNR event this past Sunday! Our dedicated vet staff from HSGD and several other organizations came together to volunteer their time, and the results are purr-fect!

We were able to spay and neuter a staggering 96 community cats! This will have a fang-tastic impact on controlling the feral cat population in our area. THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered their time and expertise to make this event possible!

Please consider signing up as a temporary emergency foster. We don't know yet how many fosters we will need, but to have a list of people ready to go is critical in us helping as many animals as we can! Sign up now at www.hsdayton.org/foster.

Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc on many parts of our country this past weekend. Between lives lost, extreme flooding and destruction to properties, it has been a tragic disaster for many areas. Here at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, we want to do our part to help the people and pets in need during this emergency situation and are currently working with national groups to lend our support and see if we can help transport animals out of these extremely dangerous areas.

However, to do this we need your help. Would you be willing to be a temporary foster for one of these animals? We can only help as many as we have foster homes for as our shelters are currently full. If you are willing to open your hearts and homes to help take in an animals, please fill out our foster application now at www.hsdayton.org/foster and we will add you to our list of temporary fosters. Time is of the essence and these situations are becoming more severe as time goes on. The more we have sign up as fosters, the more animals we can help. Please consider being an emergency foster today and help us support our fellow animal shelters who need us all more than ever right now.

He's always been a gem in our eyes here at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, but we were so proud to see our President & CEO Brian Weltge honored as a Community Gem this weekend in the Dayton Daily News.

Under Brian's leadership our facility has grown to be so much more than an adoption center. We proudly became a no-kill facility and now have a save rate averaging 99 percent. We expanded our services to include a high-volume spay and neuter clinic that currently spays or neuters more than 8,000 animals each year, with hopes of growing to more than 20,000 animals helped annually in the future. We have built a low-cost, full-service animal hospital that provides resources to those pet owners who may not have the capability of receiving veterinary care for their animals otherwise. Those are just a few of the many things our facility has done thanks to Brian, but the list could go on and on and on.

We are so beyond proud of Brian and the leadership he provides to our organization. Our entire team is excited to stand with him as we continue to grow, expand and adapt to best fit the needs of the people and pets in our community.

Help us give a big congrats to Brian, our very own Community Gem!

A pet that is adopted at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton brings joy to its new family’s life.

Meet Kratos, an amazing shelter dog with a heart of gold! This brave pup recently donated blood to help save the life of another dog in need. 🩸 Kratos was so patient and got lots of treats! His blood donation helped a little puppy get the second chance it deserved. Thanks to Kratos, that lucky pup is now thriving in foster care!

Did you know that just like humans, dogs can also donate blood to help save other dogs' lives? Dog blood donations are crucial for surgeries, emergencies, and treating illnesses. Kratos is a shining example of how a shelter dog can make a real difference!

Will you save the life of a dog who has already saved another? Head over to hsdayton.org/adopt to learn more about Kratos.

HSGD Family, we have had many of you reaching out to us for updates on the little kitten who came into our care earlier this month after being set on fire. Here is his story and how you can help. If you want to support his care, please donate now at https://hsdayton.org/get-involved/donate/give-joffrey-a-fighting-chance/.

Earlier this month, a small, innocent kitten endured the most unimaginable of cruelty. This sweet kitten was deliberately set on fire by someone’s hateful heart. The man who did this incredibly cruel act has been indicted and is currently in jail facing one felony count of cruelty to companion animals and one misdemeanor count of arson. While the courts deal with him, we have a more pressing situation at hand – trying to save the life of the innocent kitten who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On July 9th, the kitten, which we named Joffrey, was brought to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton in critical condition, suffering from severe burns and large wounds. Our team immediately began round-the-clock care for him, administering pain relief, changing bandages, and performing necessary procedures to stabilize him and clean and manage his burns.

However, given the extent of his injuries, Joffrey needed specialized care. We transferred him on July 18th to the The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. There, he has already undergone two surgeries to treat his large wounds and to correct his ears, which were severely burnt. Unfortunately, due to the extent of his injuries he has also developed a severe infection that is resistant to treatment. This complication has Joffrey on strong antibiotics. We expect him to be at the Ohio State Veterinary Center for at least another three weeks and expect further surgeries will be needed as we continue to try and rehabilitate this poor, innocent kitten.

The team at Ohio State has been incredibly generous, using their own funds to help with his care. However, the costs are still significant to give Joffrey the fighting chance he needs to recover. We’ve already spent $3,000 and anticipate needing at least an additional $2,000 to $3,000 to complete his treatment.

Joffrey is showing remarkable strength as he fights for his life, and we need your help to support his recovery. Please consider donating at https://hsdayton.org/get-involved/donate/give-joffrey-a-fighting-chance/. Your contribution will provide Joffrey with the chance for a full recovery and a brighter future. No creature should endure the cruelty and inhumane suffering that Joffrey has had to deal with, but thankfully he is with us now and receiving the best care he can get. Although he isn't out of the woods yet, we are becoming more hopeful with each day that passes and with your support we can do everything we can to save this kitten's life.
Thank you for your compassion and support.
