The cold weather will soon swoop in, bringing freezing temperatures from this weekend into next week. Here are essential tips to ensure the well-being of both indoor & outdoor pets as well as your livestock!
First and foremost, bring your pets inside if you can make it possible.
For indoor & outdoor pets:
1. Warm Shelter: Provide a well-insulated shelter with dry bedding. Make sure it's elevated to avoid cold ground contact for outdoor or strays that may roam near you.
2. Layer Up: For dogs, especially short-haired breeds, consider using sweaters or jackets to keep them warm during walks.
3. Heated Bowls: Ensure access to fresh, unfrozen water by using heated bowls to prevent dehydration.
4. Paw Care: Check paws for ice and snow buildup. Use pet-safe ice melts on walkways to protect their paws.
5. Food Intake: Just like humans, dogs and cats rely on calories for energy—and food provides the calories to fuel activities that help keep our fur friends warm, such as exercising and shivering.
6. Pet-Proof Your Home: keep potential hazards out of reach, be cautious with space heaters and fireplaces, and replenish your pet's distractions. If using ice melt, opt for pet-safe varieties to protect their paws.
7. Manage Outdoor Time Wisely: Shorten the duration of outdoor activities during very cold days, especially for short-haired pets.
8. Indoor Potty Solution: Utilize training pads for dogs in a warm spot in your home and proper training. For outdoor needs, clear a snow patch, creating a designated spot. Cats also need warmth, so move their litter box to a cozy area.
9. Pet First Aid Kit: Prepare for winter emergencies by assembling a pet first aid kit, including bandages, tweezers, hydrogen peroxide, and more. Also, keep a four-day supply of food, water, and necessary medications for your pet.
10. Know the Signs of Frostbite and Hypothermia: Watch for signs of frostbite like discoloration and swelling, and be aware of hypothermia symptoms such as diffic
