A few things to take away from this, though:

Recall is worth it. However, it is not a quick fix!

Getting the dog to want to check in with you instead of tuning you out requires that you are more exciting to the dog than the surrounding distractions!

Hotdogs make a good high value reward!

Keep the food as a reward, not a bribe!

PSA: We adopted our dog, Rowdy, from the shelter 5 years ago. He was already an adult dog, so we estimate he is about 11 or 12 years old at this point. I love this dog. He is the sweetest soul and my BFF. For the past week or so he hasn’t been acting like himself. He licked a raw spot on his foot. He was panting constantly. He was pacing. Sunday morning, the pacing and panting got so bad, and I was REALLY nervous that there was something seriously wrong with him. For 45 minutes, he panted like crazy and constantly paced back and forth. He was keeping his tail tucked down all the time. His ears were pinned back. He would not settle down and he wouldn’t eat. We tried everything. I ended up giving him a trazadone that he takes sometimes when he goes to the groomer. It seemed to take a little bit of the edge off, but not much. He still wouldn’t eat and still wouldn’t settle. I took off work on Monday so I could take him to the vet. We did bloodwork and x-rays. Knowing he is a senior dog, I was trying to prepare myself for the worst case scenario. I was glad to see his bloodwork was great except for some elevated liver enzymes. The x-rays showed he was a little backed up but no major issues. He got an anti-nausea injection and some Gabapentin to help with some tenderness in his back and to hopefully help keep him calm. When we got home, he was ok for a little bit, but eventually started pacing and panting again. We walked around the neighborhood for a long time and he used the bathroom a lot. He seemed pretty happy about that and was in good spirits until we got home and he refused to come back in the house. Every time I took him out that evening, he would hunker down like he didn’t want to come back in the house. When my vet called and I gave her the update, she suggested there may be some new electronic device in the house that was emitting a high frequency noise that is hurting his ears. We had just put new smart outlets in the house about a week ago. His pacing and panting were worse when the lamps were on, so I unplugged all the smart outlets. He stopped panting, stopped pacing, and ate his food. His tail was even up and wagging again. When I plugged the smart outlets all back in and asked Alexa to turn on the lamps, he immediately started panting and pacing again. My husband used an app to test the frequency of the smart outlets. It was off the charts. We've left the outlets unplugged for two days and have confirmed that it is definitely the smart outlets that are causing his stress and discomfort. He's back to being a totally normal dog now. I really thought this was the end for Rowdy based on the way he was acting. I am so thankful for Dr. Newell at BoonesCreek AnimalHospital for figuring out this simple solution. If your pets are exhibiting similar symptoms, you may want to consider checking your electronics first. I cannot express how relieved I am that he is ok now. 😭♥️🐶

Something I love for every dog owner to keep in mind is every interaction with our pups; every time we are with them, they learn. Are they learning good habits and behaviors or bad?

Here are some familiar scenarios:

We let them pull us on the leash just once here and there because a friend was coming up to say hello or they smelled something really good they just had to get closer to. We give no correction because it's only now and then or just once. Without meaning to that morphs into leash pulling before you know it.

You wrestled with your pup on the couch one night because he was just so cute and you were too tired to get up and play on the floor after a long day. This can prompt your dog to jump on you and bounce around on the couch for weeks to come because he wants to play and it was allowed just one time.

Dogs are smart ,they want to train us as much as we want to train them. The trouble is the things that make sense for them don't always make sense to us. Doggie logic is not our logic. Don't let bad habits sneak up on you. Thinking about the ways we interact can help us daily to combat those bad habits and behaviors. Another great way is to start training young when your pup is a blank canvas. The more good habits we help them form, the less likely the bad can sneak in there!

If you have a herding breed, you need a herding ball! Luna is only a 1/3 Aussie but man she loves this thing almost as much as her frisbee!!

Limit play time so it's always exciting. We play for about 20 minutes then it gets I put up until the next time. Leaving it out all the time would make it boring because it's always available. Also, with some pups who just don't know when to quit, they might hurt themselves playing too long. I enjoy watching Luna play as much as she enjoys playing!

His all time favorite toy in existence! This jolly ball does not leave his mouth the duration of our farm visits. So for him to loyally follow the "wait" command is a huge deal! He works so willingly and hard for me; Caleb is definitely eager to please! Sampson has come a long way; he loves to hunt anything that moves and often struggled to pay attention at the farm. His selective hearing is strong. His hard work paid off and I now trust him to never leave the barn or surrounding areas; he has graduated from dragging a lead around and can freely explore. It's beneficial to constantly build on your dogs capabilities and expand the demand. Challenging your pup is a great mental exercise, not to mention fun! Caleb lives for this ball...but his need to please is stronger. He's always incredibly enthusiastic to follow each command. As a young pup, he received training (like we offer) and it helped him develop self-confidence. Self confidence is a key factor in this display of eagerness and willingness....no matter the size of the temptation. In our move last summer, my elderly horse demanded more of my time and attention; the stress combined with less attention for Caleb resulted in resource guarding. He became unsure and would attack his own pack members. With a little help, dedication, and work, he's right back on track to being the best dog! Having a dog is a life long commitment. Understand your dog sees you as their leader and reads your body language. When the alpha seems weak from stress, less present, or anxious it unbalances your pack. "Training" is for the duration of your dog's life. If life causes you to falter as the alpha, keep in mind you may see new (likely unwanted) behaviors in your dog! Life happens...and when it affects your pup, we can help!

Spring in Ohio is finally showing face. My three stooges are used to the beach all year round, this move threw them off... they were happy to finally get in some water on a 70° day!! Caleb and Caine were best friends 5 years ago... they'd share a cage, a blanket, and play for hours on end. Upon moving in together after seeing each other only a handful of times over the course of 5 years (lived in different states)... they no longer trusted one another. Fights became frequent and dangerous. Caine had multiple stitches and both had severe puncture wounds. Had they not been pulled apart, I fear one wouldn't be alive today. Rehabilitation and teaching your dog trust is lengthy but possible. While they are still supervised when together, they've come a long way in just a few months. Special shout out to Christian K9 Academy trainer/owner that provided some guidance and lots of encouragement! Even trainers ask for help, it's how we grow to be the best! Discouraged?
