Portuguese water dog puppy
This is Mo, short for Alamo, 4 1/2 month old Portuguese water dog puppy. Every time I work one of these dogs I think I may really need one someday. He has a double turbo excellent listening and responding abilities. His owner is doing an excellent job.
4 month old toy Yorky Duke
Duke was just a bouncing, dust devil, his owners had trouble even catching him. He has been home for a couple of weeks and this is what his owners report:
Hi professor; this is Duke. I’ve been pooping and peeing on my pad, taking naps, I respond to “sit”, “no!” And “come” and I walk with my leash at least three times daily. Thanks for my finishing school education. -Duke-
This is 11 month old Coco Chanel, standard poodle puppy. She is everything I love about standard poodles. Unfortunately her high Drive has been a bit of an issue in her home. She is just so smart and wants to please, she just needs a job. Coco loves to heel. I mean how many dogs love to heel?! But when given freedom on the leash, she starts to lose her mind. I find that typical of a very bright high drive, young dog. As long as she’s working, she’s the best but when left to her own devices, making her own choices, she’s a terror!
This is one of the videos I’m sending her owners to make it easier for them to remember how I handled her. Now and then I come across the dog I would keep, this is one of them.🥰
I love how my dogs care for each other.
An anxious dog needs to learn to self sooth, a nice raw knuckle bone is an excellent tool!
This is a true rescue, not somebody giving up their dog but a dog found. My client spent hours trying to capture him. He was super scared and was completely shut down.
They had kept him for about two weeks looking for his home. And then followed through with a vet check and inoculations when it became apparent that they were not going to find his original home.
I don’t mind a fearful dog I prefer it over an aggressive dog. It’s just about finding out where his tolerance levels are and starting from there. I keep their life very small and simple. It’s all about baby steps, success and building on that. I think there’s a really nice dog inside here and I’m happy to help🥰
We start off with simple clear boundaries, kind inviting tone of voice and delicious treats from our hand. He has learned the beginnings of a sit stay and a joyful release from stay.
I really do think this onion has a diamond inside
Training these sweet puppies feels a little like working a three ring circus! Their owners intend to take them camping so I am setting them up in different situations to get great recalls and great stays. Their potty training is coming along beautifully. Such a fun and crazy challenge, three at once!
Cricket the smooth mini golden doodle puppy, such a delight to train. Sometimes I think she has more up-and-down movement than she has forward movement, she is joyful effervescence with a turbo. I really like to work the puppies off leash as much as possible it really helps me to know how much they are understanding what I’m asking.
Potty training and crate training are so very important! This little guy is challenged on both ends but we are getting it done.
Slinky is a four-month-old mini dachshund. I am so glad I got ahold of Slinky at this age as he has the starts of some pretty intense separation anxiety. The crate training should take care of that and make his life more manageable, for everyone!
Roi, Idaho shag.
I am training Roi for a nice gentleman that lives on the edge of open range. Roi has learned to take off, have a walkabout and come home when he darn well pleases. He’s only nine months old and there’s a lot of dog in that skin! He’s actually pretty fun to train very smart and enthusiasticbut he is a total handful. His owner wants a nice offleash recall and heel.
Of course there’s a lot of work to do between here and there, starting with leash work. And then because of his high drive and strong nature I will be putting an electric collar on to back up his training. I don’t do initial training with an Ecollar but I definitely will use it as an extra tool as this dog has a very high prey drive and he’ll need to be consistent for his owner when off leash.
Goldendoodle Jax
Jax is a regular and I have to admit a favorite. When my border collies approve it really says somethings about the dog. My border collies are just total snobs having very high standards 🤷♀️🤣🤣
Desensitizing the scary thing.
Boredom is your best friend in desensitizing. I like to get far enough away from the thing(in this case cars that move) so it’s no longer horribly scary but close enough so they notice. Watching the cars until he begins to ignore them is great therapy. When he looks away a couple of times it’s time for us to leave. After this experience he got to walk across the quiet park and absorb his lesson.
Fearful of moving cars
There are a number of things that I do for a fearful dog. Paddy (Patrick) is a therapy dog but has a few minor issues we continue to desensitize. The fearful dog can get themselves in big trouble by running blindly away from the thing that scares them. One of the things I do is work on the recall a little distance from the scary thing. I’m going to ask the dog to come when he notices the thing. I’m going to do that a lot overtime so that his response can be to run to the handler when he’s afraid rather than run blindly.
Walking with a well mannered fearless dog like My Dear Watson helps to mark the fearful thing as boring. Watson’s body language continually shows interest in his immediate environment and ignores the scary cars.
Place stay practice
This is the first time the little Aussie, Bailey, has done place stay. We did an abbreviated practice on leash for just a few moments while she watched these other dogs practice place stay. She absolutely understood what I wanted from her before I ever asked her. Imprinting is real and group training makes it so much easier.
Home Depot provides loads of distractions for a family lesson. Mackey is doing quite well as an adolescent hunting breed puppy.
Fille practicing her recall.
There is nothing like a well balanced, well bred German Shepherd dog. Here is six-month-old Fille practicing her recall with distractions.
Brittany spaniel puppy, Gracie.
This puppy could be a commercial on why you need a Brittany spaniel puppy. Such a delight to work with, easily as smart as a border collie. Gracie is the whole package❣️🥰
