Our first group of kitten isolation volunteers were trained this past weekend! Check out these volunteers helping to socialize our young cats and kittens who are currently infected with ringworm, a highly contagious, fungal disease. These animals can remain in isolation for as long as two months, and through our Open Paw program, even animals in medical isolation, receive enrichment, treats, and socialization. Our Open Paw initiative teaches shelter dogs and cats manners and skills that prepare them for successful adoptions and lasting homes. Open Paw promotes friendly interactions and desensitization to unfamiliar people, ensuring each animal is ready for life in a new family. We also equip our animals with vital social skills, including greeting people politely, choosing what items are appropriate to chew or scratch, housetraining, and leash walking. Our staff also gains valuable insights into each animal’s personality and behaviors through the daily handling and training of shelter animals, which helps us match pets with their perfect homes. We partner with Run-N-Paw twice weekly to help with structured exercise programs specifically for our large-breed, high-energy dogs. At Halifax Humane Society, Jennifer, CPDT-KA, Halifax Humane Society Behavior Training Lead, is pictured working with Elsa. As part of our Level 3 Open Paw: Basic Obedience program, we incorporate play-based training that introduces essential commands like Watch, Sit, Down, Come, Stay, and Leave It. Elsa also demonstrated commands like Touch and Paw! We reward our dogs with treats and play to keep them engaged and motivated. Our Story

Open-door animal shelter with public dog park, boarding and grooming facility and travel center. The Halifax Humane Society is a 501 (c)(3) private nonprofit organization servicing the Greater Daytona Beach area in Volusia County, Florida. Halifax Humane Society was founded in 1937.

We are an open-door animal shelter that services over 25,000 animals annually. Kennel and cage capacity can comfortably house approximately 350 animals per day and is usually full.

Equipped with a spay/neuter clinic, we perform early-age spay/neuter surgeries to ensure that all adopted animals are altered before entering a new home. Subsidized spay/neuter surgeries are also available at Halifax Humane Society's Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic, located at 600 Mason Avenue in Daytona Beach.

Humane Education is made available to any and all schools, businesses, civic groups, etc. through speaking engagements, tours and material. In addition, Halifax Humane Society has a focus on keeping pets with their families through animal training and behavior classes.
