Our organization is staffed entirely by volunteers, and our efforts are supported through donations and the generosity of animal lovers from within the community. Our focus is on cat and dog rescue, primarily cats. We have been known to take in the occasional bird, rabbit, turtle, a goose, and even a horse named Mya. Mission Statement

Our Mission is to rescue homeless, abandoned, neglected, or ab

used cats and dogs. By working with committed volunteers, veterinarians, and trainers, we nurture, provide medical care, and rehabilitation to these animals while providing a safe and loving "cage-free" environment for as long as it takes to find them adoptive homes.

WHEN SECONDS COUNT

This post is not advocating that dogs meet every other dog, but about how to go about it, if and when it does happen, in a safer way.

The 3 second rule for dogs meeting each other is used as a guideline to help foster positive introductions, prevent either dog from feeling overwhelmed or trapped and prevent any potential reactivity and stress.

A short 3 second introduction is enough time to provide important information to both dogs.

Enough information for dogs to know – “are you a threat?”, “do I like you?”, “do I want to learn more about you?”, “do I really dislike you?”, “do I need you to go away?” etc. Both dogs may not feel the same way – one may not be happy to engage while the other may want to.

All interactions should ideally happen like this, not just initially. Just like us, dogs can have off days – things like pain, trigger stacking, lack of sleep or a host of other reasons can influence whether a dog wants to interact or not.

There are countless times I have witnessed meetings or introductions between dogs that have gone on just a few seconds too long and have not ended well. This can have long lasting effects on future behaviour when meeting other dogs.

Understanding body language is critically important. If we are going to share our lives with another species, protect them, advocate for them and help them feel safe, then we need to understand and respect their language.

The examples in this post of red and green flags are just a few general ones to look out for – there are many more and these will differ depending on the individual dog, context and circumstances.

Make sure those first 3 seconds count – they can make all the difference.

I’m starving! Foster mommy won’t feed me cuz I have to have all my teeth pulled out today. I don’t care, cuz they’re rotten and hurt, but I sure would like some breakfast.

Last night I ran zoomies with SCOOTER. Big mistake. She trampled right over me, but I kept going, because it was fun.

Love, RODNEY

CONGRATULATIONS NIA & NICKI!

NIA & NICKI are two of the most fabulous kittens we have ever known, and since we are a rescue, we've known a lot of kittens!

We only wanted the best home for NIA &. NICKI, so when we received Jim's application we knew he was perfect for them.

How. did we know this? His previous black cat Panama Jack was leukemia positive. Jim heard about him living in a Florida shelter when he was deployed there during a hurricane. Jack's story, a leukemia positive cat living in a shelter pulled at Jim's heartstrings, so when he arrived back in CT he literally jumped in his car and drove all the way back to Florida to adopt him.

There's so much more about this situation that is perfect. In fact,
we like Jim so much we broke our October rule and adopted out a black cat on Halloween.

Over the past few days Jim has let us know that both NIA & NICKI are enjoying playing and spending an inordinate amount of time in his lap.

Life is truly blessed for these two kitties.

HAVE THE BEST LIFE EVER NIA & NICKI! W love you both so much!

PLEASE SHARE MAXWELL and help him find his forever home! He holds a special place in our heart and we are dedicated to helping him find his happily-ever-after.

MAXWELL has lived a life of international adventure. Most of it was as a pampered pooch, but these past few years have been ruff.

MAX (and his friend TIGGER) were originally adopted in CT by a man who lived in Stratford back when MAX was a baby. In 2020 they moved to Africa, but life there didn't turn out as they had hoped. The move was not good for MAX and TIGGER, and then tragically, when their dad was killed in a motorcycle accident in August 2023, the boys were left stranded in Kenya where they had little to no hope of getting out alive.

They spent several months at the KSPCA Mombosa while their rescue, Zen Dog CT worked frantically to raise the $11,000 needed to bring them home to CT. (We knew MAX & TIGGER before they moved to Africa and helped our friends at Zen Dog bring them back, so we are dedicated to helping them both find their forever homes.)

MAXWELL & TIGGER flew back to the US in March 2024 and have spent the past months decompressing from their ordeal and reconnecting with life in the US. While they live together in a foster home in Milford, CT, they are not looking to be adopted together.

MAXWELL may be 10 years old, but he is much younger at heart. HE LOVES TO PLAY AND BE SILLY! He is healthy aside from some arthritis, and is SO much fun to be with. He loves playing fetch and walking on the beach. Afterwards he enjoys nothing more than snuggling on the couch.

MAX would be fine with another friendly, playful dog, but he tends to chase the cat. He tends to have a bit of nervous energy, so no small children please.

The adoption donation for MAXWELL is $250.00. He is neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, has been dewormed and microchipped. He is also on flea/tick prevention and heartworm prevention.

To adopt MAXWELL please submit an online application to Zen Dog CT at https://form.jotform.com/ZenDogCT/zen-dog-ct-dog-adoption-application.

P/S: MAX & TIGGER have their own page (Maxwell and Tigger: Back in the USA) where you can learn a lot more about them.

Good morning from OPAL & MITTENS!

Did MITTENS jump the gate to the cat room and lick NICKI & NIA’s plate that had chicken on it this morning before we could grab her??? Yes she did!

Are we freaking out? Yes! She’s been on steroids for 10 days and her mouth looks so much better, but food allergies are nothing to scoff at, and this is why we’re just gonna transition all the cats in the cat room onto MITTENS’ beef & fish diet.
