It is with a heavy heart that we have had to say goodbye to Big RED, HR CH Whiskey Creek’s Barrel Select Bordeaux, CD RN JH WDQ (12/04/09 - 08/16/24) As much as we don’t want this to be a sorrowful post, but one to celebrate an amazing soul, we find it difficult to represent all that it took to let Big RED go over the rainbow bridge. We feel there is a Big RED shaped hole left in our hearts, that will never be replaced, but we do know he is in a better place, chasing down ducks and geese, swimming, and chasing the ‘ladies’.

When we started this journey over 15 years ago, in search of a foundation stud, we were so fortunate to find a Molson son (BIS NBISS GCHB* Sandbar’s Stock Exxchange, bred and owned by Diane Baker) as our foundation. Like his sire, Big RED was a gentleman throughout his life and his impact was far greater than just the offspring he produced. The mentorships and friendships Big RED facilitated will be something we are forever grateful for.

Big RED raised every one of our Barrel Select litters and was the BEST puppy role model we could have ever asked for. He knew exactly when to revoke the puppy license, be it at a young age for bratty pushy puppies or later to bolster the confidence of a more timid puppy, he ruled the house with a calm and confidence that will be incredibly difficult to match.

As much as he will be missed, Big RED’s life will be celebrated and cherished, this first hunting season without him will be difficult, but RED’s pond will definitely be hunted on opening day in his memory.

We had a fun weekend at the Inaugural NSDTR Club AKC Hunt Test in Simsbury, CT last week despite some crazy weather. Livee (age 4) came home with her first SH pass and both Talon (age 2) and Ziva (10 months) got two JH passes and made it look easy. Thank you to all the judges and workers who came out in the heat so that we could play. And a big thank you to photographer Jeremy Kezer for taking such wonderful photos! We're having a lot of fun with these youngsters, looking forward to the next tests.

Envy had a nice weekend at the June Strawberry Cluster in Brooklyn CT for 2 BOWs for her last set of points (and a few extra) She finished her Champion with 3 majors and is really coming into her own at only 15 months old.

Not a bad end to the Ladies Dog Club weekend n Wrentham, MA…

The CBRs performed well…Terranova’s Barrel Select Angels Envy “Envy” went BOW today for a 3pt major and Barrel Select’s Free Flowing “S**o” went winners dog and BOS. Thank you to breed judge Ms. Mary C. Murphy.

Whiskey, the GWP (“the bearded chessie”) Ripsnorter’s Barrel Select Whiskey Sour, JH JHR, ended the weekend with an O-H Sporting Group #4. Thank you to O-H group judge Dr. Steven Keating for the placement. We couldn’t be happier with the way Whiskey is maturing and really coming into his own. He’s really starting to understand the “game” and presenting himself well.

Barrel Select Kennels had a wonderful day at the sporting group show today in Wrentham, thank you to the NESGA for another great double show event, one of our favorites each year!

We are excited for our GWP, Ripsnorter’s Barrel Select Whiskey Sour JH JHR for winning the Owner-Handled sporting group, Whiskey did a great job today. Thank you to our breed and O-H judge, Ms. Donna O'Connell.

Also, not to be out done, our CBR girl Envy, Terranova’s Barrel Select Angels Envy, went BOS and BOW out of the chessie 12 & under 15 months today for her second major! Thank you to JM Coccia for helping us out this weekend and handling our girl to this win!

Barrel Select had a busy weekend in Brooklyn, CT this weekend.

Barrel Select’s Free Flowing “S**o” went WD/BOW on Friday, Reserve WD to the major and Best of Bred By on Saturday, and WD/BOW out of the 6-12 months bred by class on Sunday for 4 points this weekend.

Terranova’s Barrel Select Angels Envy “Envy” went WB on Friday, and WB/BOW/BOBOH on Saturday for a 4PT major, for a total of 5 PTs this weekend, nice start to her show career.

Had a nice quick little hunt this morning to close out 2023 with the teenager (Talon)…she did extremely well and got 2 bands to boot…oh and the little one (Ziva) got to “retriever” the merganser and had a wonderful little sit and hold

As 2023 comes to an end and we get to reflect on the year with all the ups and downs, we would like to wish all our family and friends a wonderful holiday season and a wonderful new year. Merry Christmas!!!

It’s a bittersweet night as we put our Christmas tree up, have a great fire, and Big RED enjoying a marrow bone on his birthday eve. Big RED turns 14 tomorrow and still has the heart of a teenager and desire to do more than he can actually do. He is the foundation of Barrel Select and how and why we got into the breed. Unfortunately the reality is, he most likely won’t get any birds this winter, but we are thankful for everyday he is with us and hope there are many more come…HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG RED!!!

They grow up so fast! 6.5 weeks now, the Woody x Livee puppies are having a blast. They’ve been exploring birds, water, the gun club during pheasant season, rides in the dog truck and so much more. Hard to believe they will find only be here for a couple more weeks!

Welcome to the Woody X Livee puppies! Born on September 12, three boys and two girls. Livee is being an exceptional mother and everyone is thriving. We can't wait to see these little ones grow up, although for now we are enjoying the peace and quiet.

We’re excited to introduce a New Champion! Pending AKC Approval, CH Barrel Select’s American Hero “Rip” finished his CH in style with four consecutive majors at 10+ months old from the Bred By class, including a Best of Breed win over some very nice specials. Rip is from our Woody X Kiwi litter (Barrel Select’s Coastal Redwood JH WDX X CH NGD-Spinnaker’s Gooseberry JH). He is a boy we co-own who has been with us for the past few months for foundations in both the field and show ring and we couldn’t be happier with how he has progressed. He has met every challenge we’ve thrown at him with enthusiasm and has thrived in his training. A big thank you to his co-owners and family for giving him such a great foundation! While Rip will be heading home to his family tomorrow, what a way to end his visit and we can’t wait to see him begin his hunt test career over the summer! Good boy Rip!

We are happy to announce a new pointer JH at BSK, Ripsnorter’s Barrel Select Whiskey Sour JH JHR, we missed our GSHRC HRC hunt test this weekend to run at the Yankee Weimaraner and Pointer Association of NE tests in CT and Whiskey came away with his JH title and one pass toward his JH Advanced, thank you to both clubs and the judges for a great test weekend. The weather was a little soggy on Saturday but today was beautiful.

The Barrel Select Kennels crew had a fun weekend at the Brooklyn, CT shows with great friends and wonderful dogs. We’re thrilled for 10 month old Rip (Barrel Select’s American Hero) for going Best of Breed on Sunday, over a wonderful set of class dogs and specials for his first 5 point major. We’re thankful to judge Mrs Jean Nelson for selecting him despite his puppy antics.

May 14 is turning out to be a day to remember… 8 years ago on this day, Rip's grandma Elli gave birth to his sire Woody (Barrel Select's Coastal Redwood). Six years ago on this day, Woody got his HRC started title. Happy birthday Woody, looking forward to a bright future for your babies!!

Not to go unnoticed, Moose, (Red x Mystic) at 2 years old showed for the first time this weekend with next to no training/experience and showed extremely well and improved each day...we are looking forward to seeing this boy flourish this summer.

The month of May is starting out to be very busy but also rather productive, with finishing out the last weekend of April with Whiskey going 2/3 for 2 qualifying scores towards his pointing JH. The weather didn’t cooperate last week for a photo, and the work week was busy so a little delayed in getting up some pics of Ripsnorter’s Barrel Select Whiskey Sour JHR. Very proud of him working in his first pointing hunt test and brace with other pointers and not chessies, and on quail (not chukkars). He is a very determined,hard driving hunter, with an intense and steady point to flush, very pleased with his natural ability. He does keep me on my toes and gives me quite a workout in the field at the tests.

Now off to NC for a new addition to the BSK family and then next weekend for some confirmation shows followed by more hunt tests…looking forward to the busy month of May and June.

The BSK crew got out for another upland hunt today (unstocked) and Whiskey did an awesome job, found two roosters and Derby “the pointer whisperer” retrieved after some nice shooting by Cassia.

So after 13 seasons hunting with this guy, you would think I would have learned to trust him...but with BigRED turning 13 earlier this month and not being everything I am accustomed to, I doubted him and thought he missed the stock bird...yup I was wrong again! But at least I was able to drop the bird for him at quite a distance for a great mark and retrieve for the old man!!! Even Deaf and can barely hear whistles, the big guy still has what it takes!!!!

Finally back to doing what we love. RI Duck Season Opener this morning. First black duck for both Livee and Cassia. Accompanied by a few woodies. Nice way to start the season, looking forward to CT tomorrow!

Barrel Select CBR meets Kennebec CBR, our friend Mike Z picked up a new addition to his gang, Barrel Select’s Kennebec Patriot, ”Riot” (Woody x Kiwi). We are honored that Mike chose to take a male pup from our recent litter.

We are Looking forward to seeing this team throughout the years in both HRC and AKC…let the antics begin 😂

Happy to announce BSK has a new Junior Hunter Retriever. Whiskey, Ripsnorter’s Barrel Select Whiskey Sour JHR (Kobnko Howto Speak Ripsnort x Ripsnorter’s Reece Dancing in the Moonlight). He gets an extra letter as a pointing breed for the retriever title, now onto some JH pointing tests this fall.

A huge thank you to the local clubs for putting on some very nice tests this summer, Shoreline, Colonial, LRCGB, YWHRC, and to todays judges Dick and Karen Kennedy, for the title leg and an event where they judged together, 20+ years since that’s happen, thank you!

Puppies are getting adventurous at 4.5 weeks old…king of the mountain/turtle shell and a little independent 😳

It was a hot weekend in CT at the double Junior and Whiskey definitely doesn’t like the heat, but he still did the work and got his two ribbons. On Saturday, he had an extremely long land hunt on the live flyer that decided to walk away and required a trail hunt and then capturing the still live bird. I was really expecting the shoulder tap to pick up my dog, but as I whistled after not seeing him for what felt like an eternity here he come with this live bloody bird. At this point, he decided he was done and took the bird to the holding blind in the shade and the water bowl to drink while holding his live bird that continued to try to escape with no success 😳 (hard to argue with his intelligence)…the judges were very understanding for the heat and long hunt…he got extra points for perseverance over delivery. 😂 Sunday was a long day of watching the live flyers from our parking spot (see video), we decided to work on “no bird” and honoring. When it came to our turn for the land Whiskey decided on the last bird of the day it was too damn hot and he needed to take his bird to the shade and bushes and cool off before bringing it to me and pushing the envelope for a pass. Hard to argue with a smart dog!!! Love this guy! #whiskeythegwp, #thebeardedchessie

Whiskey Water double and diversion

Took the ole man and the pup to the club today to do some water retrieves. Working on water doubles and diversions with Whiskey…he’s coming along nicely for 14 months...enjoy the fast forward helium version of Todd Turcotte, then we had a couple hours of grooming getting for his first show weekend. Livee getting it done again this morning. She swam down this goose over 130+ yards in the water. First goose and first diving/swimming cripple. Small bag limits make for quick and fun morning hunts. With these warm temperatures, maybe we will get one more hunt on the beaver slough before everything freezes up 🤞. Cassia Turcotte

Nice rainy day hunt to start the late season here (hence the foggy video). Livee's first retrieve during her first time hunting and she gets a banded bird. Couldn't ask for a nicer dog to hunt over between blind manners and the work... good girls get to show off their 'jewelry' all the way back to the truck.
