Well, here's something we all know. Another study showing that interacting with dogs makes us feel better. However, the study did use a WELL TRAINED Standard Poodle as the interaction dog. So the key here is to sign up for your training classes now! (But I have a feeling our BKC President is going to suggest it was likely just the breed.)

(CNN) — If you decompress by playing with dogs or checking their adorable videos on social media, you might be onto something.

Badger Kennel Club’s own Thunder and Isabelle McKee were selected to compete in Belgium this year for the Junior Open Agility World Championships. They will be headed overseas in July to represent Team USA! Isabelle started agility 9 years ago, but Thunder is almost 4 and has had so many accomplishments already. BKC is excited to see what’s to come for team Thunder and Isabelle at JOAWC!

REMINDER that we are having the first program of the year coming up this Thursday, January 18 @ 6:30 pm:

Dr. ELIZABETH STOKES has been a small animal veterinarian for 36 years and is a member of the charter class from the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. She has owned and operated 2 small animal practices in Fitchburg. Special interests during those years were feline medicine and senior pet health care management. While attending a national veterinary conference 14 years ago Dr. Stokes heard a talk on a revolutionary approach treating chronic disease. She remembers being stunned watching the before and after videos of patients who had been treated with stem cell therapy. Over the next few years this became her focus and passion. She has since sold Odyssey Veterinary Care but still works at the facility to provide regenerative medicine options for cats and dogs.

Stem cell therapy (SCT) uses the innate ability of these cells to reduce inflammation and actually replace damaged tissues. They are cells that can become whatever tissue is needed, e.g. bone, cartilage, nerve, ligament, muscle, skin. There are many active stem cells available in young animals and humans but over time they become less active. To utilize stem cell therapy these cells are collected, concentrated and activated and then administered directly into areas of chronic disease (e.g. joints to treat arthritis) or administered IV for disease like inflammatory bowel disease.

Elizabeth also enjoys being a member of a triathlon training group and competing in marathons and triathlons around the country and the world, including a race in Finland last summer. She also really enjoys her lively and challenging granddaughters and finds being a grandparent really awesome and tons more fun than being a parent

This is a black and white photo of Morris Frank and Buddy disembarking from a ship. It is thanks to Morris’s efforts that guide dog handlers are permitted the same right to travel as anyone else.

On November 5, 1927, the Saturday Evening Post published an article written by Dorothy Harrison Eustis about a dog training program she had visited in Potsdam, Germany, where dogs – called “blind leaders” – were being trained to guide blinded veterans of World War I. Dorothy, a breeder and trainer of German shepherds, was initially skeptical that dogs could be trained to guide a blind person. But she came away a believer.

After the article was published, she received numerous letters from people who were blind, asking for guide dogs. A letter from a 19-year-old college student and traveling salesman named Morris Frank stood out:

“Is what you say really true? If so, I want one of those dogs! And I am not alone. Thousands of blind like me abhor being dependent on others. Help me and I will help them. Train me and I will bring back my dog and show people here how a blind man can absolutely be on his own.”

Dorothy, who was born in Philadelphia, was living in Switzerland at the time. She told Morris she would train a dog for him – if he could get to Switzerland.

“Mrs. Eustis,” Morris replied, “to get back my independence, I’d go to hell!”

But it was no easy task for a person who was blind to travel from the United States to Switzerland in 1928. He booked passage on a ship, not as a passenger, but as a “package.” Kept locked in his room except when escorted by a member of the crew, Morris said he felt like a prisoner.

“At ten, he exercised me as if I were a horse, methodically trotting me around the deck,” Morris wrote in First Lady of The Seeing Eye. “Then he deposited me in a steamer chair. If some friendly passenger invited me to take a stroll, we got only a few feet before my keeper ran up breathless, grasped my elbow, and steered me to my seat again where he’d keep an eye on me.”

Morris never forgot what it felt like to be treated like cargo. “The experience angered and frustrated me and made me all the more determined to undergo any hardship to overcome dependency on others,” Morris wrote.

After being matched with Buddy and returning to the United States, Morris would spend the next 50 years not just promoting Seeing Eye dogs, but advocating for the right of a person with a guide dog to go anywhere a member of the public is allowed to go.

Dock Diving: Learning to Jump & Compete
Our very own Missi Roland will be talking about how to get involved with Dock Diving, learning to jump and compete. This sport is open to all breeds and sizes of dogs. A great seasonal activity (in our area) for you and your dog. Missi has spent countless hours in the water and land with her dogs to hone in the skills needed for Dock Diving success. She can educate you on the throwing techniques, several that she has learned from a former MLB pitcher.

Missi is an accomplished Dog Trainer, competitor in many performance sports and a competitive Dock Diver for 9 years. Missi has studied both fresh water and salt water “Water Intoxication” to recognize symptoms and aide in the treatment of this condition when it occurs. She is also becoming well versed in ways to avoid it from happening. Missi spends all her time devoted to her Border Collies and Belgian Malinois.
