What is your feed label telling you? You're going to want to read this one...

Take a look at your feed ingredient label. If collective terminology is used with words like “by products”, “grain products”, “forage products”, that indicates a least cost formula. Examples of “grain products” could be corn, oats, milo, wheat, and barley, which allows the tag to remain the same even if ingredients are changed depending on which is most affordable to the company at the time. When we take the time to switch feeds gradually because of the sensitivity of a horse’s stomach, why would we feed a horse feed that can change ingredients constantly?

Dr. Veronique Julliand, DVM, PhD, a leader in equine digestion and nutrition research, published a 2017 review showing abrupt changes in ingredients (i.e. abruptly changing from alfalfa to corn/soybean meal, while keeping protein constant) caused changes in the gut. Sudden changes in the gut can be linked to digestive upset and colic which is a drawback of “constant nutrition” or a least cost formula.

I urge you to feed a quality horse feed with a locked formula and open label with true name ingredients. A locked formula policy means ingredients must be consistently sourced from specific regions and they must test within very strict nutritional bounds before they can be accepted for use. This is another way to ensure your horse’s gut stays happy and healthy. Happy and healthy gut = less risk of ulcers, colic and leaky gut!

We don’t normally post things on here that relate to the other parts of our business but today is an exception!

Besides running this tack and feed store, we also run a 30 plus horse training facility and we stand an AQHA barrel bred stallion to the public. Today is a big day because he will be standing his 2024 breeding season at what I consider the BEST barrel breeding barn in the country!!! It’s an honor to be part of his journey. If you are a barrel racer and are interested in breeding, go check him out!!!!

We are excited to announce that Tres Move You will be standing at Highpoint Barrel Horses this season in Pilot Point, Texas.
