To my dog, grooming, friends, what dog clippers do you like the best? I seem to go through them. I figured if I buy a good set, maybe they will last longer.

Let’s talk crate training!

Crate training has long been accepted by professional trainers and veterinarians as one of the quickest and least stressful ways to mold desirable behaviors in dogs. Although many new dog guardians initially reject the idea of using a crate because they consider it cruel or unfair to the dog, a crate helps satisfy the dog’s instinct to be in a den while alleviating many problems dogs and their people experience.

What is a dog crate?
A dog crate is usually a plastic (often called flight kennels or Vari-Kennels) or collapsible metal enclosed pen that is just large enough for a dog to stand up and turn around. The crate is a place for the dog to be when no one is around to supervise them. It is the dog’s bed and sanctuary. Its purpose is to provide confinement for reasons of safety, security for the dog, house training, prevention of destructive behavior, and/or travel.

Why use a dog crate?
Correctly and humanely used, a crate can have many advantages for both you and your dog:

You…

Can enjoy peace of mind when leaving your dog home alone, knowing that nothing can be soiled or destroyed-and that she is comfortable, protected and not developing any bad habits.
Can house train your dog quickly by using the confinement to encourage control, establish a regular routine for outdoor elimination, and prevent accidents at night or when your dog is left alone.
Can effectively confine your dog at times when she may be under foot (i.e., when you have guests, at mealtimes), over-excited, or bothered by too much confusion or activity (such, as lots of children running around the house).
Can travel with your dog safely and be assured that they will more easily adapt to strange surroundings as long as they have the familiar “security blanket,” their crate.
Your dog…

Can enjoy the privacy and security of a den of their own, to which they can retreat when tired, stressed or not feeling well.
Can avoid much of the fear, confusion and anxiety caused by your reaction to problem behavior.
Can more easily learn to control there bowels and to associate elimination only with the outdoors.
Can be spared the loneliness and frustration of having to be isolated, in the basement or outdoors, from indoor family surroundings when they need to be restricted from certain things.
Can be more conveniently included in family outings and trips instead of being left behind alone.

Because dogs are highly social animals, it is important they are indoors much of the time, even when you are not home or are sleeping and can’t interact with them. Your dog needs to feel that they are a part of the family, and that feeling of belonging comes from being included in family activities and living in the house even when there family may not be there.

A crate allows you to leave them in the house when you are away, or unable to supervise them. If they were to spend large amounts of time outside, they would very likely start to exhibit problem behaviors such as barking, digging, fence jumping and chewing. These problems can be avoided by keeping them inside and making them an integral part of the family.

On this day in 1928, Buddy, a German Shepherd, becomes the 1st guide dog for a US citizen Morris Frank.

Morris Frank was a blind man from Nashville. His father read him an article by Dorothy Eustis, a woman living in Switzerland who had seen shepherds training dogs to lead blind people get around. Excited by the idea, Frank wrote a letter to Eustis and received a response letter 30 days later inviting him to come see for himself. Frank then took a ship to Europe and trained extensively with a dog that had been bred specifically to lead a blind person. The training was hard, but after weeks with the dog, Frank could get around the nearby Swiss village holding tightly to a harness to which Buddy was strapped.

Morris Frank returned to America. From the day he got off the ship, he was successful. At one point, in front of a group of dumbfounded reporters, Buddy led Frank safely across a busy New York street. “I shall never forget the next three minutes, Ten-ton trucks rocketing past, cabs blowing their horns in our ears, drivers shouting at us. When we finally got to the other side, and I realized what a really magnificent job he had done” Frank later wrote.

When Frank returned to Nashville, people were amazed at the sight of the blind man and his dog successfully navigating busy sidewalks and couldn’t believe that it was the same blind boy they had so recently taken pity on. What amazed people the most was that Buddy had an ability best known as “intelligent disobedience,” which meant that he would obey Morris except when executing that command would result in harm to his master. If there was a low hanging branch ahead on the sidewalk, for instance, Buddy knew how to navigate around it to the point where Morris wouldn’t hurt his head on it.

About this time, Frank, Eustis and several others cofounded The Seeing Eye, an institution set up to train guide dogs and their blind masters. Today, the organization reports that it has, in its 80-year history, trained 14,000 dogs. Buddy is considered the first. In 1978, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the school, the U.S. issued a commemorative stamp in honor of The Seeing Eye.

I believe in this whole heartedly. For those who do not know me, I am blind and have used a guy dog for many many years. They are definitely a source of independence also. My God dogs have been my eyes. And a very, very close member of the family.

Can't take him to the beach for a walk because he bothers you and messes with the holiday... I'm not allowed to rent a house if I have a dog, and I can't take him.
However, I can take him to the rubble to find you after an earthquake, in the woods after you get lost in the mountains and you didn't have neither map nor gps; under snow because you made a detour not allowed off track; in the water because, despite the red flag, you have entered the sea and your life is in danger! And finally ....
He's just a dog, but he will find you.
And he will save you!!"

Therapy Dogs in History!
Smoky was a 4 lb, 7 inch tall, Yorkshire Terrier who served in World War II. In 1944 Smoky was found in a foxhole in the jungles of New Guinea by an American soldier who brought her back to camp and sold her to Corporal William A. Wynne for $6.44. For the next 2 years Smoky lived a soldiers life. Because she was not an official military dog, she did not get dog food or medical care. She shared Wynne’s meals and slept beside him in his tent.
The little dog even flew 12 air/sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions, secured in the soldiers backpack. She survived 150 air raids and saved Wynne by warning him of incoming shells. Like many Yorkies, Smoky also loved to learn tricks and perform. She did so with the Special Services – entertaining soldiers in hospitals. After the war Smoky was flown back to the US hidden in a oxygen mask carrying case.
For the next 10 years she made television and public appearances in Veterans hospitals until her death in 1957. Smoky is considered the first Therapy Dog.

Look at our newest love bug that we have at doodle vision kennels. This is Kahlúa, the micro golden doodle. Isn’t she gorgeous! I am so excited to see what she is going to bring next year. I have found the cutest little golden doodle boy to breed her too. She should be around 15, 16 pounds grown and her boyfriend Should be around 11 pounds grown. Both of these dogs are completely furnished which means they will not shed at all like a poodle. They will have kind of like poodle hair. She has the absolute best temperament and learns so quickly. I cannot wait to show her her to y’all as the year goes on. We are learning our basic commands, such as sit and come this week we are going to start on stay and down. She learned so quickly it is amazing.
