Assistive devices such as orthotics and carts are an important adjunct in our therapy plans for patients @rvm.ga. They can improve mobility and quality of life, but require an adjustment period so that the animal uses them appropriately and has a positive experience. @wimba.vet provides custom 3D printed orthotics that are lightweight and adjustable which helps the acclimation process go more smoothly. Oakley was a challenging case that we collaborated on with Northlake Veterinary Surgery, @wimba.vet and her dedicated owners along with our staff, plus lots and lots of peanut butter! We are so happy to see Oakley get back to her old self and swim in the lake this summer!
Meet Cotton! Cotton is a 12 year old mixed breed who came to us starting late August 2023. When we first saw her, she could not take more than 10 steps without a sit break and had abrasions on both of her hocks due to her hindend weakness and lack of control with transitions.

Dr. Cara’s exam findings made us suspicious for IVDD of her lumbosacral spine. We quickly began shockwave at her lumbosacral junction as well as weekly physical rehabilitation consisting of underwater treadmill, laser therapy, massage, stretching and therapeutic exercise with focus on neuromuscular re-education of her hind limbs.

The second video is Cotton now- able to enjoy her golden years and is now trotting and walking with no breaks needed! Cotton has worked hard to get here and we are so proud of her strength she has gained in the last 4 months!

Oakley is having surgery for her torn Achilles on Monday. Her family is right on top of things and brought her to us first so we can coordinate with her surgeon and fit her for a custom 3D brace to use postoperatively.
She will come to us after surgery for rehabilitation and acclimation to her new brace.
