Did you know there are various types of Interdog Aggression?

🐾 Resource Guarding Aggression: Triggered when dogs compete over valuable resources like food, toys, or attention.

🐾 Territorial Aggression: Occurs when a dog defends a physical space, such as the home, yard, or a particular room.

🐾 Fear-Based Aggression: A defensive reaction when a dog feels threatened or cornered.

🐾 Redirected Aggression: Happens when one dog becomes agitated (e.g., at a squirrel or loud noise) and redirects its frustration to another dog.

🐾 Play-Related Aggression: Play can sometimes turn rough, escalating into aggression if dogs become overstimulated or competitive.

🐾 Predatory Aggression: Rarely, a dog may display hunting-like behaviors toward a smaller dog, mistaking it as prey.

🐾 Pain-Related Aggression: Aggression triggered by physical pain or discomfort, which can make a dog defensive.

🐾 Leash Aggression: Aggression that occurs when a dog feels frustrated, restrained, or overly reactive while on a leash.

🐾 Social Conflict Aggression: Aggression that occurs due to unresolved disputes or dominance-related conflicts in a multi-dog household.

🐾 Protective Aggression: Aggression shown by a dog defending a perceived member of their “pack” (e.g., the pet parent, puppies, or other dogs).

🐾 Sexual Aggression (Intact Dogs): Aggression that arises due to competition or dominance during mating behaviors, common in unneutered or unspayed dogs.

🐾 Idiopathic Aggression (Rare): Unpredictable or unexplained aggression without clear triggers, often rare and sometimes linked to neurological issues.

Understanding the different types of interdog aggression not only helps you address the behavior effectively but also creates a safer and more peaceful environment for your dogs.

If you're unsure about the cause of your dogs' aggression or how to manage it, reaching out to a professional trainer or behavior consultant is always a good idea.

There’s a lot of misunderstanding about what separation anxiety is and isn’t. It’s easy to mistake other behaviors for anxiety, but not all signs mean your dog has this condition.

Here are some distinctions to keep in mind:

Separation Anxiety IS:
✅ Extreme distress when left alone, leading to behaviors like destructive chewing, excessive barking, or accidents despite being house-trained.
✅ A reaction tied specifically to separation from their guardian or caregiver.

Separation Anxiety ISN’T:

❎ Boredom-related chewing or digging.
❎ Normal puppy mischief or excitement.
❎ Lack of training leading to poor behavior when unsupervised.

Pro Tip: If you’re unsure, it’s always best to consult your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer. They can help diagnose the issue and create a tailored plan to support your dog.

Reach out to our team today for a consultation! Our Certified Separation Anxiety Trainers can help you virtually any where you are in the world!

Did you know emergency vet visits tend to spike during the holiday season? A little extra care during this time goes a long way in ensuring your dog’s safety and comfort, so both you and your pup can enjoy a worry-free holiday together!

It’s a common myth that once a dog is reactive, they will always be reactive. However, this simply isn't true.

Dogs, like people, can learn to manage their emotions and reactions with the right guidance and training.

By teaching them specific coping mechanisms, we can help them feel more confident and less overwhelmed in situations that would normally trigger a reactive response. For example:

🐾 Desensitization

🐾 Changing the dog’s emotional response

🐾 "Look at that" training

🐾 Self soothing skills

These techniques, along with patience and consistency, can dramatically improve a dog’s ability to cope with stressors and reduce their reactivity! What other myths have you heard about reactive dogs?

If you need effective solutions on addressing reactivity, reach out to our team today! We can work with you virtually worldwide or in-person Decatur, Georgia. Learn more here: https://www.yourcaninephd.com/services/private-training

Dogs show their anxiety in ways that can sometimes look like “bad behavior”: barking, whining, chewing on things, pacing, hiding, or even acting aggressive.

But this is just their way of trying to handle feelings of fear or stress.

When we simply call it “bad behavior,” we miss the chance to understand what’s really bothering them and to give them the support they need.

Just as we wouldn’t blame a person for feeling nervous or scared, we can choose to treat anxious dogs with the same kindness and understanding we’d want ourselves.

If you need help with your dog’s anxiety, our team of professional dog trainers is here to support you. We offer virtual consultations and private training sessions in the Metro Atlanta area. Reach out to us today!
