Please don't punish a dog for growling! Growling is your dog's way of saying they are uncomfortable, scared, or in pain.

Punishing a dog for growling can make them afraid to express themselves, which may lead to more serious aggressive behavior in the future.

So what can you do about growling? Pay attention to what might be causing the growl!

Is your dog anxious, in pain, or feeling threatened? Remove them from the situation if possible and give them space to calm down.

Reward calm and relaxed behavior with praise or treats, and work on gradual, positive exposure to whatever triggers them in a safe and controlled way.

Consult a professional trainer if the growling is frequent or seems unsafe. By responding with understanding rather than punishment, you help your dog feel safe and teach them better ways to communicate!

Meet Chip! 🐾 He’s a sweet dog working through fear and reactivity. He can get nervous at the vet, is reactive to dogs on leash, and has some fear around men.
