The Up-Down Game by Leslie Mcdevitt is incredibly effective because it’s a pattern game, and dogs thrive on patterns and predictability.
By practicing this game in a calm, indoor environment first, your dog learns the rhythm and flow of the game, which helps build their confidence and focus.
When you take the game into more distracting environments, this predictability becomes your secret weapon. The pattern creates a familiar framework for your dog, making it easier for them to stay engaged with you, even when distractions are all around.
It’s like giving your dog a mental anchor—something they know and trust—to help them tune out the noise and focus on what matters: YOU. The more you practice, the stronger this skill becomes, and soon, your dog will be choosing you over distractions with ease!
Have you played this game with your dog before?

Here are some last minute tips to support your animals during the firework & festivities! In my neighborhood we have bonus gunfire!
-Make sure all of your pets are secure in your home.
-Do not take them outside once the fireworks begin.
-Keep you dogs away from windows and doors if they are free in your home.
-Close blinds and curtains, if you have them.
-Do not change your pet’s routine except for putting them to bed a little early!
-Use sound masking (white, brown and pink noise) to help your animals deal with the sudden loud noises outside.
-Consider keeping your lights on inside if your animals are sensitive to lightening or flashes.
-Allow your animals to access to “safe places” like bathrooms, laundry rooms or under your bed. In this video, I have my nightstand open so my cats can crawl inside if they want to.
-Provide your animals with some enrichment to help them decompress and to help keep their minds on something pleasant.
-Do crate animals who feel safe in confined spaces!
-Do NOT crate animals who do NOT feel safe in confined spaces.
-Do use interior rooms in your home, even a closet, to help your animals feel safe!
Although this is a very last minute post, please save these ideas for Juneteenth, July 4th, or the next festivity with fireworks!
Muzzle training isn’t just about safety, it’s also a valuable life skill for your dog!
By teaching them to wear a muzzle comfortably, you’re preparing them for situations like vet visits, grooming, or emergencies where they might feel scared or uncomfortable.
A dog that’s already used to a muzzle stays calmer, making the experience less stressful for both of you. It also ensures your dog can go places or join activities where muzzles might be required, giving them more opportunities to be part of your life.

Recall is one of the toughest skills for dogs to master, but Nacho is proof that with patience, practice, and reward-based training, progress happens! Watch his transformation from not really responding to enthusiastically running back every time. 🐾
Watch Elliot practice his greeting skills! He has been taught that when you tell him "say hi" he will give a default sit.
This is a great skill because it teaches Elliot to remain calm and polite during greetings, which is especially important when meeting new people or interacting in busy environments. By giving a default sit, Elliot avoids behaviors like jumping or overexcited movements, making the interaction more enjoyable and safe for everyone involved.
Teaching a dog to "say hi" with a sit also reinforces impulse control, helping them learn that calm behavior leads to positive attention. It's a skill that can be used in a variety of situations, from meeting guests at home to greeting strangers on walks.
Do you have a dog who's an enthusiastic greeter? We can help! Contact our team today to learn more about our private training options, available at our school or in the comfort of your home!
