What is dilated cardiomyopathy? Dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, is when the heart chambers enlarge and lose their ability to contract. It often starts in the left ventricle (bottom chamber). As the disease gets worse, it may spread to the right ventricle and to the atria (top chambers). Currently the best research implicates Taurine deficiency as a precursor. It is an essential amino that dogs should make and absorb but for a myriad of reason this process has developed to become inefficient in them.

Taurine is non-toxic to dogs and has a very high safe upper limit. There are no known side effects of too much taurine in dogs, and any excess amount will be broken down and used by their bodies for some other purpose

Taurine deficiency can interfere with different metabolic processes in your body, which may result in:

Although dogs manufacture their own taurine some breeds do not do it as well and some not at all due to genetic disorders those breeds are Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Dalmatians, Portuguese Water Dogs, and English Bulldogs to name just a few. This has been thought to be the reason for high prevalence of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Taurine regulates the blood flow throughout your dog's body, which helps to strengthen the heart's walls. Many heart conditions weaken the walls of the heart and arteries which can lead to various diseases. So supplementing taurine in your dog's diet can help to prevent and treat these issues.

Taurine might also improve heart failure because it seems to lower blood pressure and calm the sympathetic nervous system.

For dogs who have a deficient the RDA recommends 500mg for small dogs and go as high as 2000mg for large breeds. Taurine has a high upper limit and it is very hard to have toxicity.
