Tonight, we’d like to introduce one of our newest intakes. Please welcome little Dove to the rescue. His story is a tough one. Last month, he was found in a rain-soaked box at a job site by a kind Samaritan who reached out to OGPR for help.
When Dove first arrived, we rushed him to the Animal Hospital of Sandy Springs for an exam. He was underweight, not eating on his own, and clearly struggling. An ultrasound revealed something unusual in his abdomen, but it wasn’t clear exactly what.
Because of the Labor Day weekend, his referral to UGA for further diagnostics was delayed. In the meantime, our amazing foster coordinator, Catalina, cared for him around the clock, syringe-feeding him food and water. Thanks to her dedication, Dove began gaining strength.
Once at UGA, with so many concerns, the team recommended a CT scan and a dental exam. We’re so glad they did, because it revealed answers we had been searching for. The scan showed that Dove’s jawbone, the mandibular condyle, had dislocated from the temporomandibular joint, shifting out of place. This explained why his teeth on one side had overgrown and why he was in so much pain he didn’t want to eat.
The CT also revealed a mass in his liver. Combined with the healing wounds found on his back, we began to wonder if Dove had once been attacked by a dog. It’s possible the attack dislocated his jaw, caused puncture wounds to his back, and led to an abscess in his liver. Sadly, it seems that once he stopped eating, his previous family abandoned him instead of seeking care. We can’t know for sure, but the pieces do fit.
The good news is that Dove is now on pain medication, his teeth have been trimmed, and he is eating like a champ. We’ll be monitoring him closely, including a follow-up ultrasound next month to check on the liver mass and to see if he’ll need ongoing dental trims.
We may never know exactly what Dove went through before coming to us, but one thing we do know for sure from here on out, his days will be brighter, safer, and filled with love.🐹🤍💙🎊🎉
