Please take note of changes to the City of Decatur Animal Cruelty Ordinance.

Help protect our pets and animals! 🐕‍🦺🐈

Updates were recently approved to the Animal Cruelty law in Decatur to further protect our pets and animals. A summary of changes to the ordinance:

▪️ Prohibits the starving and mistreating of animals
▪️ Outdoor shelters must be constructed of wood or other weather-resistant materials with solid walls on all sides, a raised dry floor, and a sloped roof
▪️ No choke collars, rope, chain, or cord directly attached to an animal's neck
▪️ No tethering or confining an animal at a vacant structure or premises for any purpose or time when it is not monitored by a competent adult present at the property
▪️ No tethering any animal to a motorized vehicle
▪️ No tethering any animal which is sick or injured
▪️ No tethering any animal which is less than six (6) months of age
▪️ Diseased or sick animals are required to receive proper medical care and should be segregated from other animals to prevent transmittal of disease/sickness

If you suspect animal cruelty, please call Macon County Animal Control at 217-425-4508.

We thank the local organizations that lead this effort to strengthen our Animal Cruelty ordinance. The entire ordinance - Chapter 47 - can be found on our website: https://www.decaturil.gov/159/City-Code

Happy Birthday Bennett! Look at this sweet young man (and his equally sweet and adorable sisters!). This sweet little guy recently turned the ripe old age of SEVEN and asked for donations to the shelter for his birthday in lieu of gifts for himself. We want to thank Bennett and all the young Macon County Animal Control supporters and advocates in our community! While we're at it, peep this sweet little family with recently adopted Todd (now George). Thank you to this sweet family for adopting, fostering (yes, they even foster kittens!) and for these amazing birthday gift donations!

We can't leave out Pool Boy today...the pools may be closing soon, but Pool Boy's heart is open for love! With the monetary gifts that Bennett received for his birthday, he chose to sponsor Pool Boy's adoption fee. This means, there is NOTHING standing in your way to making Pool Boy your new best friend. Pool Boy came to the shelter as a stray. Since he had been with us before, we knew his owners. Unfortunately, due to their housing situation, they were unable to pick Pool Boy up and have since had to rehome the rest of their animals too. Pool Boy is a sweet fella with an adorable face and eyes you could get lost in. He is fully vetted, neutered, and ready for his new home!

Now, onto this week's breakdown. This week we’ve seen 18 adoptions, 5 reclaims, and 8 animals go into much needed foster homes. The lucky ones now in their forever homes are listed below:

This weekend update is brought to you by the amazing partnership we have with all of those on our team. Whether you’re a staff member, a volunteer, a foster, or a supporter on FB that shares our posts, YOU ARE APPRECIATED!!!

We have two happy stories today!!! Read below to learn about Peggy and Cowboy’s ‘gotcha’ days!

Cowboy: Attention Cowboy fans everywhere…Cowboy won! Cowboy had a successful meet and greet with a LOVELY adoptive family. He now has ACRES and a POND to romp around on and in. We cannot thank his LOVELY foster momma or his new adoptive mom and dad enough for all the love and work that this match took!

Peggy: Volunteer Angel, Ashley, covered Peggy’s city registration fee with repeat adopter, Kate! Kate came in for Pizza today (the kitten, not 🍕! 🤣) but was ultimately wooed by sweet little Peggy. It takes a team, and we truly have a great one. Nothing warms our hearts quite like seeing how much our lovely volunteers, fosters, and staff put into each and every adoption and every interaction with the homeless pets in our community. Thank you Ashley for covering Peggy’s fee and thank you Kate for adopting, AGAIN!

Now, onto this week’s breakdown. This week we’ve seen 31 adoptions (including one happy bunny!) and 11 pets reunited with their families. While we are THRILLED to report this number of pets leaving the facility and going into homes, we’ve also seen 55 newly impounded animals JUST. THIS. We were delighted to host Ms. Kramer's English as a Second Language (ESL) class from Johns Hill Magnet School Decatur Public Schools #61 at the shelter today. This great group of kids got to see behind the scenes at the shelter and get some quality time with a couple of kittens and one playful pup named Jimmy. Thanks for coming out!

April 14th – 20th is Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, a time established for Animal Control Officers nationwide who work to save animals and advance animal welfare. Animal Control Officers are part of the first responders, emergency services, and essential workforce network. These officers often go unrecognized but deal with many of the same situations as law enforcement on behalf of the animals in our community.

If you see one of our officers out and about, please thank them for all they do.

Here are a few of their responsibilities:

-Investigate animal-related complaints associated with animal bites, attacks, dangerous dogs, animal cruelty, animal neglect, sick or injured animals, strays and potential rabies exposure.

-Enforce Macon County and City of Decatur Animal Control Ordinances along with State of Illinois Animal Regulations.

-Patrol Macon County & the City of Decatur while responding to calls for service about animal-related complaints.

-Maintain effective relationships with the community by providing education on responsible pet ownership, animal control functions, animal safety and animal laws.

-Responsible for impoundment, care and welfare of all animals in the custody of the Macon County Animal Care and Control Center.

-On top of their regular hours, they are also subject to call out for emergencies during their off time.

Sgt. Paulette Smith – 40 years of service
Warden Stan Boulware – 8 years of service
Warden Leanna Homer – 2 years of service
Warden James Sheets – 2 years of service
Warden Brian Cline – 1 years of service
Warden Jacoby Clem – 1 years of service

Thank you for what you do!

Welcome to this week's weekend update! A HUGE shout out to the community members who came to our Rabies Clinic today. We want to dedicate this weekend update to Veterinarians everywhere, especially MCAC's own vet, Dr. Owens. Did you know we have a full-time veterinarian on staff? We are INSANELY fortunate! Dr. Owens is dedicated to the homeless pets in our county and goes above and beyond in everything she does. Being able to provide low-cost clinics is especially important to her as she loves to help her community. 💜🩵 We want to celebrate YOU today, Dr. Owens (don't kill me please🤣)!

We'd also like to thank our amazing, dedicated volunteers who changed their schedules up for the day to accommodate the clinic hours. Thank YOU ALL so much for coming in this morning and for doing all the amazing things you do for the homeless pets in our community week after week! It takes a village and today's success wouldn't have happened without you!

Welcome to this weekend’s update! Have you been thinking of bringing a new pet into your home? Have you ever heard of the rule of 3’s? It takes 3 months (sometimes longer!) for a new pet to fully acclimate to your home and family. While perhaps that can seem daunting, it is also a fun period of time where you watch your newly adopted pet’s personality start to truly shine! There are things we can do to help our newly adopted pets acclimate like using proper crate training and gentle, positive reinforcement to encourage and develop good behaviors. There are numerous resources available FREE online and signing up for beginner obedience/training classes is great too! Shelter staff and volunteers are always happy to help with suggestions and can help get you started if you’re having issues (whether the pet is an MCAC alum or not!) or have concerns or questions before adopting. If you’re having issues with a pet already in your home, look for suggestions and assistance before giving up...your pet loves YOU and wants to be with you!

Now, onto this week’s breakdown. We saw 28 adoptions this week and 3 pets reunited with their families. Thank you SO much to all these lovely families! The lucky pets are listed below:
