Animal Highlight!

Here's Quin, the Bald Eagle! Quin was a wild bird injured in Quinhagak, Alaska and sent to us by the Bird Treatment and Learning Center in Anchorage, Alaska on May 20, 2014. He is estimated to have hatched between April 16, 2010 and May 30, 2010. He shares his exhibit with a female bald eagle, named Hallie.

Fun Facts:
🍁The bald eagle’s scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, means “white-headed sea eagle.”
🍁Bald eagles develop the characteristic white head and tail feathers by 4-6 years of age, until that time they are entirely brown.
🍁As in most birds of prey, female eagles are larger than males.
🍁Benjamin Franklin was opposed to making the bald eagle the nation’s symbol because eagles steal food and scavenge. He wanted the wild turkey to be the nation’s symbol instead.

Zoo Buddies kids will be learning all about "Paddling Penguins" during next week's class!

Sign your 3-5 yr old up for an hour long class at the zoo as we discuss these unique birds on Tuesday, November 12! There are still open spots in both the 10am and 2pm sessions. 🐧🐧
