At Bryan Animal Clinic, although we strive to maintain a down home, relaxed, small neighborhood practice environment, we are proud to offer state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. We are going to start featuring a piece of equipment weekly! 👨‍⚕️🏥🔬🩻

First up is our ultrasound machine. This is Dr. Greenbaum's favorite piece of equipment, and he couldn't practice without it! Dr. G has a special interest in ultrasonography and took an advanced rotation in ultrasound as a student at MSU.

We use ultrasonography for everything from obtaining urine samples (while being able to assess the bladder for stones or tumors at the same time) to performing fine needle aspirates as a non-invasive way to assess tumors inside the body. Ultrasound has become an extension of the physical exam, and through rapid point of care techniques such as AFAST, we are able to look inside your pet quickly and painlessly to obtain much more information than can be obtained from physical exam palpation alone.

We are proud to provide this modern imaging modality for our wonderful patients!

With the sealing of the parking lot last weekend, we are finally done with all of the external renovations to the clinic. We are SO happy with how everything turned out, and we hope you are too. Looking forward to serving our community for another 50 years as your locally owned neighborhood practice! 😍🏥

Many aren't aware of this change in veterinary medicine that has been rapidly occuring and spurred on by the pandemic pet boom. THANK YOU for supporting your local privately owned veterinary clinic! ...and if you know of a veterinarian that is tired of corporate life, and would like to practice in our community, please get them in touch with us!

"About a quarter of general veterinary practices and about three-quarters of specialty practices, such as emergency and surgery care, are now owned by large corporations, according to John Volk of Brakke Consulting, a veterinary management consulting firm.

Some private equity-backed chains, such as National Veterinary Associates, buy community-based veterinary practices like Ezell’s without rebranding them under the chain’s name. As a result, clients might not be aware of the ownership change.

“It can appear you’re getting community-oriented care when there’s actually this set of big-box incentives underlying [the clinic] that comes from their private equity owners,” Fenne said."

*Edit* Re-reading this, I don't want there to be any negativity taken towards my colleagues that are employed by corporate owned practices. There are SO many amazing veterinarians doing amazing work regardless of ownership. I just wanted to highlight this shift in veterinary business practices. I am very concerned with the direction of the profession as a whole with the influence of private equity ownership. I feel like keeping things local will continue to provide the best experience for our patients, clients, and community. 💙💙 - Dr. G

There has been a lot in the media lately concerning respiratory disease outbreaks in dogs. Dr. G is at a continuing education conference in Huntsville today and made sure to attend a lecture addressing respiratory diseases. At this point, there is not any evidence of any new or exotic disease agent to be concerned about. Appropriate vaccinations based on the lifestyle of the dog and their risk factors is still the best way to ensure our pups stay safe. ✌️💙🐕

This adorable British Short Hair kitten is not painted up to go out dancing at a rave. She came in for assessment of suspected ringworm (dermatophytosis). Under a Wood's Lamp (essentially a blacklight) the Microsporum fungal organisms light up candy apple green and in this case were very apparent. She has started both an oral and a topical antifungal to get her infection under control.

We appreciate all of the kind words and offers of help. Adam McCulloch our awesome ALFA agent responded quickly and recommended Prodigy Mitigation Services who graciously spared some manpower from the major DMS pipe burst project and along with our amazing plumber Ed Davidson came out and started working to get us back in action. Prodigy warned us that due to the work and the significant associated noise, we may not be able to operate tomorrow. We will keep everyone posted and open as we are able. Thanks again for everyone's support and while we apologize for the MAJOR inconvenience of not being in the office for you, we hope to be back in action ASAP.

UPDATE: If folks are coming in we will probably come back after lunch for a few hours as well. Based on the comments, it seems we may have some work to do. Please be patient as most of our staff live further out, so it will just be 3 of us doing what we can. If you do come in, please please drive safely!!

*Update 7pm Sunday: If we get precipitation tonight and roads are unsafe for travel, we will not be open in the morning. We will see what the evening brings and keep everyone posted...*

We will be keeping a close eye on road conditions over the next few days to be sure our patients, clients, and staff stay safe. We will tentatively plan on being in the office from 7am-12pm Monday and make decisions from there. If your pet needs medication refills, please try to call them in early tomorrow, so we can be sure to have them ready in case of early closure. Everyone stay safe and have FUN if we truly get what is being predicted! ❄️🐶🐱

[REMINDER] with winter weather in the forecast, remember if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet. We want pet owners to remember your 🐱🐈🦮🐶 four-legged friends as the temperatures begin to fall.

Here are a few tips to make sure both indoor and outdoor pets stay healthy throughout winter.

☃️Bring pets inside: Pets can get hypothermia and frostbite, just like people.
☃️Provide a cozy space: If pets are going to be left outside, make sure there’s a comfortable, warm space insulated from the wind and cold.
☃️Check your pet’s paws: Cold weather can damage your pet’s paws. Look for cracked paw pads or bleeding. Also, make sure to clean your pet’s paws after being outside. Salt and other products used to melt ice and snow can irritate paw pads. Paw booties are an option if your pet needs to walk outside.
☃️Layer up: If you pet has a thinner coat, he or she might need a sweater or coat. Just make sure the extra layer isn’t wet—a wet coat or sweater can make your dog even colder.
☃️Prevent poisoning: Clean up antifreeze spills or buildup whenever you notice them. Pets might like the way it smells and tastes, but it’s poisonous. If your pet eats antifreeze, call your vet immediately.
☃️Get a checkup: Cold weather can make certain medical conditions like arthritis worse.

We now send out a Keyscreen GI Parasite PCR Panel for all puppies on their first visit. This state-of-the-art DNA based test can detect 20 different GI parasites from a tiny amount of stool. This has been a game changer in detecting parasites that can be harmful to our patients and their human family members. Results on a puppy we saw yesterday revealed the presence of hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and giardia. 💩🧬🪱🦠
