Norm and Tigger were returned at no fault of their own back in November. They are a very bonded pair of brothers. We were so excited when we had a family who wanted to meet them and add them to their family. These two boys are going to be living their best lives with some other kitties at home. We are so happy for them. Thank you so much to their new family for adopting!

The other day you met Captain Morgan, today meet his brother Jim Beam. Jim was so scared when he came to us. He is now one of our friendliest adult cats. Jim loves other cats, people, and he is very interested when we bring a dog in the cat room. One of Jim Beam's favorite things to do is to run in the cat wheel in his room. When he has worn himself out doing his daily wheel walk, you can usually find him perched on one of the cat towers with one of his friends. Stop in and meet Jim and our other adoptable kitties today. We are here until 4pm.

Our first adoption of the year is a volunteer favorite! Thomas is such a love bug and this guy has landed in a great home. As soon as we snapped his adoption picture he just started licking his new dad and making biscuits. This guy is going to bring a lot of love and joy to his new home. Thank you for adopting!

Captain Morgan has called the Humane Society home for almost 3 years. This handsome kitty is a social guy and he does seem interested in dogs when they come in the room. He enjoys the company of other cats. We would love for Captain Morgan to land in a great new home this year. Stop by and meet him during our public hours 12-4 pm Wednesday through Saturday.

We are going to provide more information and try to answer questions from yesterday’s post so this will be a long post. First, the phone number for our Spay/Neuter Clinic is 217-809-1877 which is a cell phone and not answered on a regular basis as the clinic is by appointment only and does not have public hours. You can leave a message and we will return call as soon as we can. Our next Spay Days are scheduled for January 17th and January 31st. Those dates will be for stray and feral cats as we still have 148 on our TNR waiting list. February dates are not set yet as we have our Mardi Paws fundraiser on Sunday, February 22nd. We hope to start taking applications in the spring for low income pet owners for dogs and cats. We have not determined the cost yet but it will be only what is needed to cover some of our expenses, such as veterinarian and assistants for surgeries, all the medications required for surgery, vaccines, etc. As to questions regarding appropriate age to spay and neuter, puppies and kittens must be at least 8 weeks old and need to weigh at least 2-1/2 lbs. The HSDMC is a not-for-profit providing services to our community for animals in need. We do not receive any funding from local, county, or state governments. We depend entirely on donations, fundraisers, and grants. Our organization is mostly volunteer basis. If you have time and love animals, and, would like to volunteer, please request a volunteer application via email at [email protected]. We need volunteers for various shifts at the shelter to care for dogs and cats waiting for adoption which includes cleaning, feeding, socializing, laundry, etc. We could use some extra hands as well for Spay Days, and, if you have any experience as a vet assistant, that would be a wonderful bonus.

We are so proud and excited to have started the New Year with our first Spay Day today in our new Spay/ Neuter Clinic. 23 cats (15 females, 8 males) were spayed and neutered thru TNR protocol. Pics include the first 3 to arrive at 8:15 this morning, Dr. Owens and her surgery team, HSDMC volunteers, and cats in post op waiting to go back home. A huge thank you to staff and volunteers for a successful day. 15 cats that won’t be having litters this spring.

We had someone who missed having cats at home after a recent loss and was looking for a pair of bonded cats. Then he asked if any of our bonded pairs were black cats because black cats were amazing. We ended up showing him Petunia and Begonia and these sweet girls have now landed in an amazing home where they can rule the house. Thank you so much for adopting two!

Pogo wants to let everyone know the HSDMC will be closed to the public for New Years, and, will reopen at noon on Friday, January 2nd. Pogo says not to worry because staff and volunteers will be taking care of him and all the other HSDMC animals. Best wishes for a great 2026! Pogo would like for you to keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he undergoes FHO surgery on Monday. Pogo came to the HSDMC today from MCAC so we could help him with injuries he sustained after being hit by a car a few weeks ago. Pogo didn’t have a microchip and no owner came forward to claim him. Pogo is in foster care and not available for adoption at this time. This guy is about a year old and a real sweetheart. Wish him well.

Also landing in a new home is little Bing. This little guy is so full of personality and his love for people won over his new family. Bing is going to live with a couple HS kitties who were adopted earlier this year. Thank you for coming back and adopting again!

Special Needs #Giving Tuesday Network for Good

Bambi is a sweet fourteen month old Boxer/Lab mix. Bambi was hit by a car in the care of previous owner, and, did not receive necessary veterinarian care. Now she is at the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County in Decatur, Illinois, awaiting surgery for amputation of her right front leg. Neurological damage cannot be repaired, and, during the length of time she did not receive medical attention, she tried to chew her foot off. She is currently on pain medication and daily bandage change while waiting for scheduled surgery.

Bambi is one of four special needs dogs currently at our facility. Another is Heath, a young, chocolate lab male, waiting for his scheduled surgery at SportsVet in Savoy. Heath needs to have the femoral head removed on his left hip. Heath is another hit-by-car tragedy not receiving veterinary care. He is currently on pain medications. Then, we have Rebecca, a 7 year old Maltese, mostly blind from cataracts. We would like to be able to take her to an ophthalmologist to see if she is a candidate for cataract removal. And, last, but not least is Scooby, a two year old rat terrier mix, that came in mostly blind.

These special dogs would really appreciate any monetary donations to the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County to help provide for their surgeries and care. You can donate through Network for Good #Giving Tuesday starting now. The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County is a no-kill animal shelter/rescue that is mainly volunteers, and, depends entirely on private donations and our fundraising activities.

Can you help us help these special dogs?
