If you have been at our shelter and spent time with our cats, you are probably very familiar with Secret. Secret is a 5 year old Siamese mix who was adopted as a kitten. She had some issues with sneezing and was returned several months later when things were not clearing up. Not long after this, we noticed her skull was changing shape. We took her to the U of I for some tests and it was found that Secret had several bones that were broken in her nasal cavity, probably causing her sneezing issues. She also has a bony mass on her head, but it is all bone, and the only way to remove it is to remove part of her skull, which we will not do. Secret has been hanging out living her best life she can with us. However, her mass has stopped growing and her sneezing is much better and we would love to find Secret a home to call her own. Secret does very well with other cats and she even gets along with dogs. Stop by and visit with Secret. We are open 12-4pm today.

Ever wonder what HSDMC volunteers do for fun? Bottle feed kittens! It was a late night Tuesday as a nice cat lady, Nicole, informed us someone moved out of a house, took the mother cat, and, left four babies under the porch. Who can say no to helping these little ones? They are currently with foster mom, being bottle fed and socialized. Thank you, Nicole, for crawling under a porch in the heat to save these babies and get them to us.

06/23/2024

Update: Rosie has been placed in foster care as well.

Wow! Another very busy week. This little cutie pie was brought in the other day by a Good Samaritan who found her in tall grass. Her little eyes were matted shut and she was having some difficulty breathing. A Dawn bath to get rid of fleas and some antibiotics, and, little Rosie is doing great. At about three weeks old, she’s chowing down canned kitten food.

A big heartfelt thank you from the HSDMC to this awesome man, Dr. Larry Baker, who has provided veterinary care to many of our animals for over 20 years, always caring and giving his best. There aren’t enough words to express our appreciation for what Dr. Baker has done for the HSDMC thru the years, always supporting our efforts for the animals, emergency calls, helping us set up treatment protocol for shelter animals, providing one of his veterinarians to come once a week to the HSDMC for routine exams and vaccines so we didn’t have to transport animals. Dr. Baker rented space to us in the Northgate Pet Plaza 22 yrs. ago when we didn’t have any money all because he believed in us and what we were doing. He was excited for us when we were able to purchase our own building 8 yrs. ago and gifted us with a nice microscope and office furniture for our lobby. With Dr. Baker’s expertise and his staff and other local veterinarians, the use of his clinic, we partnered for numerous Spay Days, spaying and neutering thousands of animals for low income pet owners and feral cats. Dr. Baker held puppy training classes at the HSDMC for a few years as we knew training is so important to have a well behaved adult dog.
We are sad that today is Dr. Baker’s last day at Northgate Pet Clinic. We will miss him tremendously. We love you, Dr. Baker, and, we wish you the absolute best in all your future endeavors.

Special Needs #Giving Tuesday Network for Good

Bambi is a sweet fourteen month old Boxer/Lab mix. Bambi was hit by a car in the care of previous owner, and, did not receive necessary veterinarian care. Now she is at the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County in Decatur, Illinois, awaiting surgery for amputation of her right front leg. Neurological damage cannot be repaired, and, during the length of time she did not receive medical attention, she tried to chew her foot off. She is currently on pain medication and daily bandage change while waiting for scheduled surgery.

Bambi is one of four special needs dogs currently at our facility. Another is Heath, a young, chocolate lab male, waiting for his scheduled surgery at SportsVet in Savoy. Heath needs to have the femoral head removed on his left hip. Heath is another hit-by-car tragedy not receiving veterinary care. He is currently on pain medications. Then, we have Rebecca, a 7 year old Maltese, mostly blind from cataracts. We would like to be able to take her to an ophthalmologist to see if she is a candidate for cataract removal. And, last, but not least is Scooby, a two year old rat terrier mix, that came in mostly blind.

These special dogs would really appreciate any monetary donations to the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County to help provide for their surgeries and care. You can donate through Network for Good #Giving Tuesday starting now. The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County is a no-kill animal shelter/rescue that is mainly volunteers, and, depends entirely on private donations and our fundraising activities.

Can you help us help these special dogs?
