One down…four of the Destination Litter left to go. Although they were happy to see their brother, Dublin, go home (more room to run and play), these remaining babies are not loving shelter life. Florence, Madrid, London, and Phoenix are 7 weeks old and are some of the most social and playful kittens you’ll meet. Since their condo is located in the shelter lobby, they get to greet everyone as they come and go, but a quick hello and goodbye, along with some playtime with staff and volunteers here and there, just isn’t enough. Rocket is really hoping his big puppy dog eyes and gorgeous masked markings will catch the interest of his new family so he can go home soon. If those don’t quite do it, he figures that adorable floppy ear of his should do the trick. Rocket is a 5-month-old Fox Terrier mix full of playful curiosity and puppy charm. He loves to run and explore, roll in the grass, and go on walks. He’s a smart, affectionate pup who is perfecting his “sit” and has the sweetest way of offering his paws for you to hold. Little Percy was brought to the shelter with his brother and sister as a tiny kitten just old enough to lap up kitten food slurry from a bowl. Thankfully, since the shelter is not the best place for little ones to grow up, Percy didn’t need to wait long before someone came to take him home. His new mom recently sent us an update and it looks like he’s settled right in. She says:

“We have changed his name to Phoenix which means a lot to us as a family! Phoenix is definitely loving playing with the kiddos and vice versa. He is the best and he completes our family so well.”

We can’t wait for updates in the future to see what a handsome guy this sweet little orangie grows up to be. THANK YOU FOR ADOPTING!!

What better way to start the day than with a sweet, smiley little pup out enjoying the autumn leaves. Tarzan is a 5-month-old Blue Heeler mix puppy who is hoping there’s someone out there looking for a sweet boy like him. He’s just a little guy, so things can be a little scary for him at first, but it doesn’t take long for him to get comfortable, especially if someone he trusts is nearby to scoop him up for a snuggle. He likes to explore, go for walks, and get ear scritches and tummy rubs. He’s just learning about how much fun toys are, and lately has been trying his hand at fetch. The sad reality of "kitten season" is that it's no longer a season at all—it's nearly year-round. We recently took in this little one, who was found cold and all alone. She is tiny and weak and struggling to bottle feed, but we will do everything we can for her to help her grow strong and hopefully find a forever home.

This is the result of the cycle that occurs when cats aren't spayed and neutered. Unsterilized cats (pets and strays) contribute to countless kittens with nowhere to go. A single unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce hundreds of kittens in just a few years. Sadly, there aren’t enough homes to go around.

THERE IS HOPE THOUGH!! HSNEI offers assistance for the spaying and neutering of cats in our five-county service area. With every cat that is spayed and neutered, we take a step toward preventing animal suffering and ensuring a brighter future for all cats.

This week we received a very heartfelt donation from a dog owner celebrating her dog’s birthday for the first time since his passing. Instead of facing the day alone, she came to the shelter bearing gifts: bags of yummy treats and fun new toys for the dogs. We made sure every dog got some birthday goodies and lots of extra love in his honor. Here are just a few eagerly awaiting theirs. The pups send their love and happiest tail wags, and thank you for making their day special—and for giving them a way to celebrate your wonderful boy.
