Murphy was a very popular boy with so much interest we could barely keep up with all the applications, emails, and phone calls we received about him. This handsome boy needed to find just the right fit in a forever home and thankfully he found it!! His new mom and dad sent us these pictures and an update saying “Murphy has settled into his forever home. He immediately became one of the family.” By the looks of that big grin and tail wag we’d say it was a match meant to be. THANK YOU FOR ADOPTING THIS SWEET BOY!!

THANK YOU to the Luther College Women’s Tennis Team who used their day off from practice this week to volunteer at HSNEI. They toured the facility, learned about volunteer opportunities at HSNEI, and played with the dogs and cats. Lots of much-appreciated pets and snuggles were given to the cats and kittens at the shelter while dogs Roosevelt and Beatrix got to show off their fetching and sitting skills. Socialization and play opportunities for the pets awaiting their forever homes is so important and we hope to have this group visit again soon!!

On this day we remember all of the lives lost in the attacks on September 11th, 2001. We also remember the incredible bravery of those heroes, both human and canine, who risked life and limb, day in and day out, working in rescue and recovery after the attacks. These dogs, with their keen senses and determination to the point of exhaustion, worked with their handlers in incredibly dangerous conditions to help find injured victims, comfort struggling rescue workers, and bring closure for the families of those who did not survive. Today we remember all the victims lost and honor the incredible sacrifices made by those heroes on two legs and four.

~A LONG adoption update with a VERY happy end~

Back in May of 2023 a mama cat and her three little kittens came to HSNEI. One of those kittens, Chickpea, was quickly adopted and the next day the two remaining brothers, Tiger and Snuggles, were also adopted into a home together. For about a year Tiger (renamed Barnum) lived happily with his brother until unexpected changes occurred and Barnum needed to return to the shelter alone. Barnum, a sweet and gentle boy, was withdrawn and rather confused at being back in the shelter but did have an adopter come to take him home after a few weeks. This home did not turn out to be his forever home either and Barnum came back to the shelter yet again. We did a post for Barnum in the hopes his forever family would see and come in to meet with him. It turns out a family did see and were interested but they had already met Barnum the year before when they adopted the first kitten out of the litter, Chickpea!! Barnum and his other brother Chickpea (now Oliver) are living their absolute best lives together as brothers once again!! Their mom says “I am happy to report that Barnum (now Cheddar) is happy to have his new (old) playmate! Cheddar is a goofy, energetic, cuddly little guy. He is the perfect addition to our family…the only problem we have had so far is telling the two of them apart!” THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ADOPTING AND FOR GIVING CHEDDAR’S ADOPTION STORY SUCH A WONDERFUL ENDING!!

This 8-month-old litter of Wheaten Terrier/Border Collie brothers and sisters-Nova, Boots, Misty, and Cody are our newest arrivals at HSNEI. We’re still learning about their personalities and, although everything is still a little new and different to them, these pups seem to want nothing more than to be loved. They can be a little wary of meeting new friends but it doesn’t take long for them to be leaning in for cuddles and belly rubs. They have previously lived with other dogs as well as children. Boots and Cody are doing exceptionally well walking on a leash while the girls are still a little unsure and prefer to be carried for now. For more information on these sweet pups or to fill out an adoption application visit www.hsnei.org/adoptabledogs today!!

This good-looking young pup is Quantum. He is a 10-month-old Carolina Dog Mix looking for his forever home. This sweet boy was found wandering as a stray and sadly no one came to claim him. Quantum is a calm, gentle boy who loves to be near people especially if they give good chin scritches. He loves going for walks and exploring out in the Big Yard but likes to stay close as everything is still fairly new to this big pup. He’s not a big fan of playing with toys or chasing balls but instead prefers to sit with you in the grass and just enjoy the day. For more information on this beautiful boy or to fill out an application visit our website or stop by during our Community Learning hours Friday or Saturday!!

Sweet Camille is hoping this is her week to meet her forever family. This beautiful girl has a calm, quiet personality and tends to let the kittens and younger cats have the spotlight when visitors come to call while she’s happy to nap in a corner. At seven years old this calico beauty doesn’t ask for a lot. A home with a sunny window to watch birds from, a warm cat bed or lap, and the occasional head scratch would be more than enough for her. If you have room for an older gal like Camille please consider coming out to meet with this sweet girl or filling out an adoption application.

This stunning boy with the perfect sit is Murphy. He is a 1 1/2-year-old Goldendoodle looking for his forever home. Murphy is a pup who loves to please and enjoys nothing more than hearing all about what a good boy he is. He’s a curious kind of guy who loves to explore outside, go on walks, and chase the occasional squirrel. Murphy previously lived with his mother and liked to play with her-wrestling, chasing, and play growling. He’s not impressed with most toys but loves a good bone to chew on. Murphy has a history of asking very politely to go outside to potty, has had some obedience training, and was accustomed to holding down the fort while his previous owners were away for a good part of the day. For more information on this handsome boy or to fill out an adoption application visit www.hsnei.org/adoptabledogs today!!

PICARD, LILITH, HONEY, AND JANEWAY NEED YOUR HELP!! These four kittens represent some of HSNEI’s tiniest currently adoptable pets and are each an example of why having plenty of quality food on hand is so important for growth and development. These adorable little ones are growing strong and healthy because of generous donations of food but unfortunately it just hasn’t been enough to keep up with all the mouths we have to feed. Because of the constant need for dog and cat food HSNEI is partnering with a pet food distributor to purchase food in bulk to ensure no one goes hungry. Donations of pet food are still very much welcome and appreciated but monetary donations put towards the purchase of bulk orders can get us 30-50% more food to stock our pantry with. Please consider donating at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/2ab57243-b35d-4c66-8bcb-86dc316f1413 to help keep these and all of our other adoptable cats and dogs well fed!!
