Today is World Kindness Day, a day to remember the positive impact that kindness can have on individuals, communities, and the world at large. We can’t think of a kinder thing to do than taking a homeless pet out of the shelter and giving them a second chance at life by opening your heart and home to them. If you’ve been considering a new family member, all of these beautiful boys and girls are currently waiting for families. More information and applications can be found at www.hsnei.org/adoptablecats and www.hsnei.org/adoptabledogs.

Adopting isn’t the only way you can help, though. If you aren’t able to adopt right now, fostering an animal temporarily is the next best thing. You can find more information on becoming a foster family at https://new.shelterluv.com/form/volunteer/HSNI/37798-foster-family-application.

Another way you can help make a significant impact is by volunteering. Cats and dogs at the shelter are always happy to make new friends. The simple act of walking a dog or petting a cat can significantly improve that animal’s day, and the socialization helps them find a home more easily. For more information on volunteering, please visit https://www.hsnei.org/volunteer.

If you aren’t currently able to adopt, foster, or volunteer, donations —whether monetary or new or used items —are greatly appreciated and allow us to continue helping animals in need. You can make donations directly by visiting https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/2ab57243-b35d-4c66-8bcb-86dc316f1413.

This beautiful boy, with the intense gaze and perfectly flopped ears, is Edward. Don’t let that serious look fool you-this 5-month-old Hound Mix pup is all smiles and tail wags when not posing for pics. Edward is a curious and playful boy who loves getting out to explore while going for walks or playing out in the Big Yard. He loves to soak up the sun, sniff the breeze, and watch birds and bugs fly by. He’s an affectionate pup who loves having his ears rubbed, appreciates a good hug, and is always happy to see you. Edward is a smart boy who does well walking on a leash, knows “sit,” and is learning fetch. We received an update from our sweet alum Pippa (formerly Sakura), with pictures showing off her adorable Halloween costume and of her being a very brave girl coming home from the vet after her spay procedure.

Her mom says, “Pippa is doing wonderful; she is such a sweet girl and is so smart! She actually loves wearing clothes - she has a growing collection of sweaters to wear now that the weather has turned, and she sits patiently while she gets one put on before heading outside in the morning to go potty. She has a raincoat too for rainy days because she has decided that she is NOT a water dog. She's going to be in for the shock of her life when it snows!”

We will eagerly await new photos of this glamorous little cutie in her raincoat and enjoying her first Iowa winter!!

Meet Parks, Angelou, and Lewis, our “Wobbly” babies!!

Feline Cerebellar Hypoplasia is a big and rather scary-sounding word for a not-so-scary condition also known as Wobbly Cat Syndrome. It usually occurs when a mother cat becomes infected with the FPV virus. The part of the brain most impacted is the one that controls balance, which is why these little ones are “wobbly.”

There is no treatment, but the condition does not worsen, and kittens affected by it adapt to the wobble and go on to lead full, happy lives with a few special considerations, such as raised water and food bowls and easy access to their litter box. The condition is not contagious, and cats with FCH can live with other pets. They should, however, be indoor-only cats and would benefit from a calm home with minimal safety hazards, such as unsecured stairs or balconies.

Vaccination is key when it comes to preventing Feline Cerebellar Hypoplasia. Ensuring all cats (especially those who might become pregnant) receive their combo, or FVRCP, vaccination protects them from the Feline Panleukopenia virus that causes wobbly kittens. HSNEI offers this vaccine (and more) at our Pet Wellness Clinics and also by appointment at the HSNEI center.

This tiny, wobbly trio is currently doing well in a foster home, and although they are not quite ready to meet their forever families, they will be soon. We’ll share more about these adorable little ones and their sweet personalities in the coming weeks.

Being a teeny tiny kitten without your mama is tough. Ideally, mother cats will teach their little ones everything from grooming and play to socialization and litter box use. When kittens come to the shelter as orphans, we do everything we can to fill in for mama cat by first meeting their basic needs, such as keeping them warm, clean, and fed. Once they’re big enough, we get down to business with things like litter box training.

Thankfully, the instincts of even young kittens are strong, and with some time, patience, and lots of tiny litter boxes filled with soft-on-the-paws litter, we have them potty-trained in no time. THANK YOU to World's Best Cat Litter for your amazing work that keeps our litter box room filled to the brim so we can continue to help tiny little ones like these.

These babies aren’t quite ready to go home yet, but will be soon, so keep an eye out on our website at HSNEI.org. And to find out more about World’s Best Cat Litter and all the good they do, go to www.worldsbestcatlitter.com.
