Drug Abuse: Are We Overmedicating Dogs?

More dogs than ever are being put on meds like Prozac and Trazodone for anxiety and aggression—but most have never had real training, fulfillment, or a lifestyle that meets their needs.

Dogs need structure, exercise, purpose, and leadership—not just medication. Too often, meds are used as a quick fix instead of addressing undertraining, under-fulfillment, and unrealistic expectations.

I’m not against medication—it can be helpful when used as a last resort to supplement a well-rounded plan. But skipping training and suppressing behavior with meds? That’s not fair to the dog.

Leadership Knows No Age – Building Trust & Respect from the Start ! In this video, our 3.5-year-old daughter Joanna is demonstrating incredible leadership and clear communication while working with our 3 month-old Rottweiler named Gino on obedience training. She is marking correct behaviors and setting clear boundaries for unwanted ones—all with patience, consistency, and confidence.

This is a perfect example of how leadership and relationship-building start early, both for kids and dogs. Dogs thrive when given clear guidance, structure, and trust, no matter the age of the handler. By involving our children in training, we are not only teaching them responsibility and confidence but also nurturing a respectful and balanced relationship between them and the dog.

A well-led dog is a happy and secure dog. It’s not about dominance—it’s about clarity, trust, and consistency. When done right, even a young child can be a respected and effective leader in a dog’s life.
