12/05/2024

Over the next few weeks we would like to inform you all on how to deal with different types of wildlife that you may encounter in our city. From Coyotes to snakes and even opossums. There is no need to panic if you run into one of these. We hope to give you some good tips and information on how to keep both you and the wildlife safe. Today we will start by talking about coyotes.

Spotting a coyote in the city can be a fascinating experience, as these adaptable creatures are common in urban environments. While they typically avoid humans, knowing how to interact with them can enhance your appreciation of wildlife in our midst. In this post, we'll share helpful tips and interesting facts about coyotes, along with simple instructions for what to do if you encounter one during your daily activities. Understanding these animals can foster coexistence and ensure that both you and the coyotes have a safe experience in the city.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife gives the following tips for how to deal with coyotes in city environments
1. Do not feed coyotes! Keep pet food and water inside. Keep garbage securely stored, especially if it has to be put on the curb for collection; use tight-locking or bungee-cord-wrapped trashcans that are not easily opened.
2. Keep compost piles securely covered; correct composting never includes animal matter like bones or fat, which can draw coyotes even more quickly that decomposing vegetable matter.
3. Keep pets inside, confined securely in a kennel or covered exercise yard, or within the close presence of an adult.
4. Walk pets on a leash and accompany them outside, especially at night.
5. Do not feed wildlife on the ground; keep wild bird seed in feeders designed for birds elevated or hanging above ground, and clean up spilled seed from the ground; coyotes can either be drawn directly to the seed, or to the rodents drawn to the seed.
6. Keep fruit trees fenced or pick up fruit that falls to the ground.
7. Do not feed feral cats (domestics gone wild); this can encourage coyotes to prey on cats, as well as feed on cat food left out for them.
8. Minimize clusters of shrubs, trees and other cover and food plants near buildings and children's play areas to avoid attracting rodents and small mammals that will in turn attract coyotes
9. Use noise making and other scaring devices when coyotes are seen.

If you have any questions please give us a call at 281-478-7274 or if you have a coyote in your property please call the police departments non-emergency line at 281-479-1511 for assistance.
