Around the water trough:
Since I'm constantly told I don't post enough on my page I figured I'd share some recent conversations with other trainers. Things we wish more people knew or opinions. I'll start with what I and many trainers think of as myths.
1. " You can't ride papers." Ladies and gentlemen, not true. Most preformance trainers will tell you we ride papers daily. I can look at papers and 80% of the time I know what to expect in looks and mind. Its not 100% of the time but it's a nice little cheat more often then not. Please don't come at me with " My grade mystery was the best horse ever." I'm sure it was and there are exceptions to every rule. Yes I've heard of Snowman and Seabisket. These stories are famous BECAUSE they were anomalies. Look at the pedigree when you shop. Find someone who understands it if you don't. It saves money . Don't breed if you don't know the temperment and quirks of the parents or think they won't pass on. Personality and work ethic are as genetic as conformation.
2. " Feeding horses treats makes biters". I'll call this half true. Indiscriminately feeding treats may cause a mouthy horse. Using treats as a reward for good behavior is a tool that's nice to have in your toolbox. Horse trainers are one of the only animal trainers who routinely waste this opportunity. Every other species of trainer has this figured out guys. Catch up. You will never convince me a horse is less intelligent then a dog , mice or dolphins. Learn how to treat and when to treat and treat away. With purpose. Teach a horse HOW to take treats. (Happy to show anyone how to do this. )
" Bad legs are the worst thing a horse can have". A long back and a bad brain are literally worse to deal with . Id argue a bad brain is the worst thing you will ever deal with in a preformance horse. When it comes to conformation nothing sucks more then a long backed horse . I love our chiropractor. Shes a vet and aside from being a magician at her trade she's a ray of sunshine to have around. I get to see her monthly when I have a weak loined long backed horse. But , I'd rather see her for about anything else. It travels to every aspect of the body. I can make a steep shoulder or chubby foot work on a good brained short backed horse. But if either of those things are not good it's a massive challenge.
Those are some of last months conversations among professionals. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk lol

Its that time of year when I start reciving calls for training. This month the vast majority of people I've spoke to are looking for a trainer who will take a stallion. Which frankly is odd. However, fewer and fewer trainers want the added liability involved with housing and training stallions. Perhaps this explains the trend Ive had over the last 4 weeks? This is completely understandable. I've handled stallions the vast majority of my life. Starting at 16. For the most part, they don't phase me. But for trainers they do come with added risk and worry. Turnout, housing , training time ect. Several conversations I've had this month do lead me to pose this question. - Why do you want a stallion? So lets discuss as this decision comes with risks and stress for all involved not least of which is the horse himself.
Things to consider
1. This animal will never have a natural life . Is the benifit keeping a horse intact worth the added behavior and housing issues ?
2. Do you have experience handling stallions in the past or are you willing to leave the horse with someone who does?
3. Is the horse worth being kept intact? Heres the question that brings up the most emotion. Everyone has an opinion. So here are some guidlines
A. Temperment-Temperment-Temperment. Full stop! An unruly c**t is a nightmare stallion. It requires a certain disposition to pull off being secluded combined the hormones raging in a breeding stallion.
B. Correct conformation and breed type. Legs legs legs people.
C. Pedigree to suit their disipline. If they have the pedigree do they offer something that makes them a standout? By that I mean is it the same pedigree people can get 100xs over and if so why is your guy better or unique?
4. What is your goal? Making $? No. Just no Breeding your own mares for a program? If you are not a breeder you don't need one. Because you've always wanted a stallion is not a viable reason. You need a plan. The fantasy we all had watching The Black stallion is not the reality of Stallion ownership. Promoting is EXPENSIVE. Housing is EXPENSIVE. Training is EXPENSIVE.
Just food for thought. Im always willing to take a stallion with a plan . But be aware I expect my clients to learn to handle their stallions and be educated in their care. Stallions need a Job to be fulfilled. Please train your stallions or send them to someone who can for their mental health. If they can't make it in a training program geld them. If you ever think" Ill just wait I think he will get better with age" geld him. Have your c**ts evaluated by a trainer and LISTEN to the advice you get. My door is always open for questions. Ive seen too many people get in over their heads not really thinking out this decision. If you are there yes I'll try to help. Advice is free lol.

Arena update since everyone keeps asking. Met with our builder yesterday for the prebuild walk through and measuring . This is getting real! Dan did the remaining dirt work . Spoke to the county about some changes. Indoor should start November 1st. I will have openings as of now. We will be adding a tack room to the stall area . Kinda racing winter so trying not to get too stressed.

Long winded post if you are bored lol
Last show of the year and for the most part a huge success. Evan was first in reining under one Judge second under the other with Jennifer Holmes Sparky daugher May being first and second . That made me so proud Im not going to lie I cried. Not enough of Sparkys kids get to show in working western which is truly his talent as a sire. Im deeply appreciative to the owners who put their hard work, finances and emotions into developing their horses to do this sport and, their trainers who support them.It takes an incredible amount of commitment to show. It takes next level passion to have the patience to devlope a pattern horse.
This weekend I was speaking to another trainer about what makes or breaks clients and trainers as they relate to clients. I could write a book on this subject. But, heres the big one. Is it the ribbon that drives you or ,the drive to succeed and learn how to be a rider then compete to test your skill ? Is it the fun of the show and people ( it does need to be fun and for God's sake enjoy your shows) or is it the time you spend focusing on how you communicate with your horse . Is the show the main event or is it the success you have overcoming a challenge that drives you? If you just do it to play dress up and hang with friends there is always a new hobby that can distract you. If its about social life only ,drama will distract you. A bad show is tough but, if you see it from the prospective of a challenge to do better next time you'll come back stronger.
Its taken me to long to realize you are never in competition with the other riders. You are in competition with you!!!Your trainer is your teacher. Not everyone learns the same so not every student is going to learn from the same teacher. Teachers are people. We have lives outside class but we take our work home ( often literally) like any teacher. Our families and friends are affected. We need our "off time" too. If you find you are a student who has no respect for lots of teachers maybe its not the teachers and time to self reflect...My advice is to treat your other competitors as kids in other classes in the same school. Go to learn. Mingle to make friends. If you are just starting and are not winning guess what? You shouldn't be winning if your competitors have been in school longer. You are a freshman. They are in higher grades. You will win but ,you have to get there. Keep going. Get mad . Get sad about it. Dont for godssake blame the horse they didn't intentionally ruin your horseshow. Just throw yourself into being the best you can be. Don't badmouth others or blame your teacher. Its up to you to learn. The horseshow is just a test. We ace some we flunk some. Our horses are also students. Its a group project. Your horse is on your team but sometimes they don't feel good, have a bad day or, don't get it. Oh well. Back to class.
This weekend I took 2 riders. 1 just starting out who did not place in her classes on her 3 year old but overcame massive fear and rode well. Not one riding ribbon and she is thrilled to death to have put in rides to be proud of. She is a newbie riding a baby. She was my hero on attitude this weekend. Hanna Johnson you are a future star in this sport!
My other rider is an old hat to doing well . Her mare just recived her legion of Honor. Miss Amelia had a bad show. She was not feeling it and Jessica Simon though frustrated was not frustrated with her horse but frustrated Amelia wasn't happy and concerned she maybe wasn't feeling well. She was not mad about the ribbon. She was worried about her horses wellbeing . That is called Horsemanship. The horse is the star of the show. We are the management
This was a crazy show season with emotions that swung the worlds largest pendulum. Im going to do it all again and keep putting my heart into teaching those students who want to learn. Its the end of the year. Congratulations horseshow class of 2023. To my fellow teachers and their students Im routing for you all. See you at the next show til then- Enjoy the ride!

We had such an incredible show this weekend! Evan went in ranch rail for the first time . 2nd place which was pretty great for a first timer. Its definitely a class he needs practice in but he was a good egg .The judge commented what a beautiful ranch horse he was.
He knocked his leg pretty good Wensday and was rushed to the vet to get the ok to show. Saturday after our rail class it was bugging him so we scratched our next 2 classes. Today he was feeling better and We had the best go ever in our ranch class pulling off a win. He was fabulous! I of course took exactly zero photos of him. Maybe Kate Seiler or Hanna Johnson did?
I showed Hannas baby horse Lockett in his first ranch class. He was the only baby in a field of first rate finished ranch horses. He was a freaking star. Right in the middle of the pack in a huge class . I think 7th of 13? I can really point to a thing he did wrong outside of a less then finished turnaround. just super steep compition in the half Arab open ranch. Sky is the limit for Hanna and her new horse. What a great start!! What a Super talented quiet minded 3 year old.
Jessica Simon once again wowed us with her ranch horse going costume. Won preformance halter .3rd ranch rail . Second in reining.
Overall the vibe was so amazing it was a blast. The show was well run and fun to attend. I love the Arabian horse community so much. Everyone is so supportive of their competition and just chatting with people around the show is 50% of the fun!
Huge thanks to Kate and Justin for packing up and Kate for being my warm up rider once again.
