Horse Truth Tuesday:
Vocalizations are highly important to horses.
Whinnying and neighing sounds are elicited when horses meet or leave each other. We are officially accepting applications for Maverick! While he is not FULLY available yet, he should be within the next week or 2 (pending weather cooperation). We want to be sure he is set up for success with his new partner- whomever that might be! This boy is SO athletic, he could truly go any direction. We believe he would excel working cows. He is curious, playful, and loves to use his mouth on everything. He also loves to run, and I think he would be be good at barrels too eventually. Maybe an all around horse! A variety would be good for him, as he has an active mind. He is always engaged, and so willing to please his person. He does need someone who will continue to be patient with him, to make sure he has an understanding for what he is learning. He truly is a special boy, looking for that special person. His training videos with us are on our YT page. This boy will go quick, so get your application in!

A non-horse related event that we can get behind!

**Greetings!**

We are excited to invite you to join us for the "I Am Not Invisible" Women Veterans photo shoot, hosted by La Crosse County and Western Technical College on February 12th from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM and February 13th from 1:15 PM to 5:00 PM. This heartfelt event will take place at the Coleman Center, Western Technical College (617 Vine Street, La Crosse, WI).

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum will be available to schedule interview times to capture your unique stories as part of the "I Am Not Invisible" Oral History Project.

Women veterans can sign up for the photo shoot at: https://bit.ly/IANI-Wisconsin. Sessions are organized in 15-minute increments, so we encourage you to register early to secure your spot. Please wear solid colors or bring your uniform (no white, please), and feel free to bring along any memorabilia that represents your journey. Campus parking passes will be emailed to participants for your convenience.

Horse Truth Tuesday:
Horses can sleep both lying down and standing up.
Horses have a unique survival adaptation called the stay apparatus that allows them to completely relax and sleep standing up. The point of this is to enable horses to run at the first sign of danger. However, they still need to lie down for short periods of time to achieve deep (REM) sleep and complete their sleep cycle. ZERA IS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION: Zera originally came to us July 31, 2023 from a rescue in Wyoming. We had originally paid for Zera from the kill pen in Colorado, but we were instead sent a horse that we were told was mother “Birdie” now known as Athena. In this mix up, Zera was instead sent to the rescue in Wyoming that had originally paid for Birdie. We were contacted as informed that the two have been together all their lives and may be bonded. Zera was supposed to be bred, with an unknown due date. Zera finished quarantine in Wyoming, and we arranged for her transport to us for evaluation and rehoming. Zera we found was not pregnant, and had some very strong opinions that without the right management could have turned very bad for the handler. Her “go to” was trying to bite or kick when she was pushed too far from her comfort zone. We spent a lot of time working with Zera WITHIN her comfort zone, and with patience and understanding. Zera was adopted back in October 2024, but due to life circumstances changing for her adopter, she came back to us. Zera is a sweet girl, that needs someone who will be willing to take their time to build a bond with her - she has a lot of “mustang” type tendencies. She gets along with just about everyone in the herd. She is being re-started under saddle (we believe she has some training, but needs to find confidence in it). This girl deserves a forever home!

I was listening to one of my podcasts yesterday while cleaning stalls and it had a message that just really hit home. You can’t promise performance level, but you can promise presence.

I can’t promise to get everything right all of the time. I am human after all. But I can promise to show up. I can promise to be there to help owners considering surrendering their horse- to either help the find resources to be able to keep their horse, other rescues to take their horses when we are at capacity with a waiting list, or to take in their horses when they have no other option. I can promise to be there when the horses need us. I can promise to be there when people are having a ‘hard go’ of it, and need connection, or a community that lifts each other up at every opportunity, a sense of belonging, and amazing animals to share all of that with. I can promise to be there when someone is looking for their next partner, a new family member (an equine) for whatever the reason. I can promise to show up! I can promise to try my best, and guess what- that is enough!

So today, I challenge y’all to give yourself grace, you can’t promise to be THE best every time every day, but you can promise to be there, show up, and try.
