Long overdue Liam update:
Well, I was very worried about him for a while. He would do well, then sort of lose his progress, then seem better again, and his lungs just wouldn’t clear completely. We seem to have turned a corner, though, and he is upbeat about both his prospects and life in general. He now has a clean film of his lungs, so the battle against pneumonia seems to be won. He eats all puréed foods and drinks mostly unsalted bone broth. He has to stay in an upright “sit pretty” type position for at least fifteen minutes post eating/drinking. I’ve been being a human Bailey chair for him, but a friend of mine is going to make one. Here are awful photos of him with a toy he just stole from Tomich. He’s a mud-puppy who needs a total grooming, but he gets physically manipulated so much already, just to eat and drink, that I’m giving him a little more time before I do the whole bathe brush trim blow dry thing to him.

Liam's update: he's doing well, with three weeks left on his antibiotics and a chest X-ray in ten days. His special eating chair is still on its way, and his bloodwork looks good - his thyroid panel was normal, and the rest of his results should arrive this week from U.C. Davis. Despite everything, Liam remains his mischievous self. The challenge is getting food into him and preventing his aspirating it into his lungs. Meanwhile, I've come down with a bug I picked up at the emergency specialty hospital and am feeling ghastly. I need to buy some Theraflu. (I haven't had a cold since I stopped teaching.) Negative Covid test, though. Here's a photo of Liam as a young prince that I found and sent to a fan of his in Colorado, who has a Liam grandson (via Rhys, who's been anxious about his dad - they really love each other).

Update on Liam. He may have myasthenia gravis, as his symptoms are often secondary to that. He has mega esophagus, which caused him to aspirate fluids into his lungs resulting in pneumonia. So he had to be treated for all that and is now home on heavyweight antibiotics. We await the results of his test for MG and a thyroid panel, and future treatment depends upon results. He’s going to get a follow up chest film in ten days. The challenge is managing the mega esophagus, which is really difficult, and I have no experience with it. I would love to get tips from anyone who has.

Meanwhile, though, Liam kept up his usual shenanigans, escaping from a crate at the specialty hospital and casually going walkabout. The tech said she’d never had a 14 year old dog escape on her before. That’s my boy. 🥹

🆘 Liam needs help. The grand old man of Errigal, dad to many, including Rhys, and a large number of therapy dogs, is feeling very poorly. It seems to be some sort of infection rather than cancer or intestinal block. He needs more diagnostics, but for myriad reasons including my own medical expenses of the last several months, I just have nothing left for him. If you love Liam too, please could you contribute to his bill? I don’t even know yet what it will be, but most likely a lot. He’s been doing very well and been very healthy despite his age until very suddenly he wasn’t. If you would like to contribute, my Venmo is -Doyle-4 and my profile pic is of Laoghaire, smiling. If you can’t or don’t want to, that’s fine, I get it, just, I don’t need any lectures or judgement at the moment, so please just pass by without comment. I’ve never made a public appeal before, although there have certainly been people who have helped me, but I have given to them, many times.

I lost my Cian, Errigal’s greatly beloved cat mascot, a shaded golden Persian. He was calm, kind, and just beautiful. It’s so hard when a longtime friend dies. He would’ve been 19 in August. He’s 16 in the photo. And now my gorgeous old boy Liam is not doing well. Bad bad week.

Scientists recommend limiting your dog’s pool time and using a water filter to remove chlorination byproducts based on new study findings.

Bladder cancer has been linked to environmental chemical exposures in people, but these risk factors are not well understood in dogs. By examining several factors, researchers identified an increased risk of bladder cancer for dogs exposed to pool water and high concentrations of chlorination byproducts from their municipal water source.
