What Shedding Can Tell You About Your Horses Health
What shedding can tell you about your horses health!
Horses shedding can be a sign of more than just spring coming. Here’s some information on what’s normal and what’s not!
For horse people, the surest sign of spring in the barn is horse hair everywhere. However, it can be worrisome if you horse isn’t shedding. If you horse is normally a good shedder and this year is holding onto it longer it could be a sign of Cushings Disease, particularly in our senior horses. Cushings Disease is a disorder of the pituitary gland that results in hormonal imbalances.
Older horses with cushings also tend to grow long thick coats with extra long hairs on the chin, neck and belly, drink more water, have increased urination and excessive sweating.
Horses with cushings disease are at a higher risk of developing laminitis. If you have concerns - let’s talk about it at your spring vaccine appointment. We test with a simple blood draw and get results back in under ten days. The sooner we have a diagnosis the sooner we start treatment!

‼️‼️‼️GRAPHIC but really cool CONTENT!‼️‼️‼️
Dr. George was called out to a farm to help a horse who had been kicked by another horse, like horses do sometimes! Upon arrival Dr. George assessed the injury and decided it was best to drain the hematoma to avoid the formation of scar tissue. The horse was sedated, received local anesthesia to numb the skin, an incision was made to drain all the fluid and then a small tube was sutured into the incision to encourage additional drainage. In a few days the tube will be removed and the incision will heal.
