Its my first litter’s 7th birthday, my Game of Thrones kiddos. We have been through a TON since we started, everything you can think of we have experienced. I am a much better breeder because of it.

I regret nothing I have been through (well almost) but I am always looking to improve upon myself and program.

Even though all things are up in the air on if Opossum will be bred again, I still look back on these milestones and smile.

We are so proud of this team! At just 9.5mos London AKA Skylar took a BEST IN SHOW from the classes at this weekend’s United Kennel Club show in Michigan.

I’ve been really slacking on updates. It has been about a year since we have done anything with the big guys. Health, time, life have all gotten in the way.

In Sept we entered the Presa Canario Club of America’s specialty and Monographica.

Opossum took BISS at the specailty and BOSS at the Monographica. It was amazing to be able to show her as a puppy back in 2020 and receive MBPISS and then come back and take BISS and BOSS as an adult.

After that we played around in a UKC show and managed to get a Group 4 one of the shows. This being her first weekend shown in UKC

Then it was time to have some fun, we entered a North American Sport Dog Association trial this last weekend and she excelled in all things tracking once she understood WHAT we were tracking. She managed to pull off getting her TL-1 UL-1 and SD-1.

So now she is

I knew it could happen, and it did. Grimm bloated on Monday.

I hadn’t had him pexyed for reasons that are not important now but was working up the courage to do it soon. Soon came in a way I really didn’t want but here we are.

It was quick y’all and we are lucky.

It was not obvious to start either. I was home which is rare and he was just uncomfortable with some regurgitation. It wasn’t like the typical videos you see displaying bloat with extremely painful dogs foaming at the mouth.

I almost ignored it. I’m kicking myself for not taking a short video.

He would lay down for about 30secs and then do a prayer stance, stretch, circle and lay back down with some urps thrown in. Thought he ate something he shouldn’t have and was going to just give him pepcid but he wouldn’t stop the pattern of being uncomfortable (spoiler alert: he had also ate something he shouldn’t have)

He hadn’t been exercising, he hadn’t been kenneled, he hadn’t tanked more water then usual, he hadn’t been stressed. He bloated.

Initially the specialist didn’t think we had a torsion. He didn’t appear painful to them, he wasn’t presenting normal. So he was tubed, emptied and his rads retaken. In that 30mins GDV was obvious on his rads and his spleen looked extremely congested and may need a splenectomy.

Know your dog…..if you think they are not right, listen to your gut. I almost left and took the kids to BJJ that afternoon. I hate to think if that happened.

As a breed community we need to push for bloat education with our puppy owners. Bloat is something in our breed, as well as others, and won’t be going anywhere for many reasons. We need to talk, we need to identify dogs in pedigrees who have bloated (without cause) not to elimiate them from the gene pool, not to shame their breeder for existing, but for education about prophylactic gastropexy so that dogs lives can be saved.

I am the breeder of this dog, he bloated. It wasn’t my fault nor the breeders before me. What will be my fault is not educating my puppy buyers appropriately about the importance of knowing the signs, risk factors and why to get them pexyed.

The dogs before him had their stomach’s tacked, the ones following him will as well. He just paid the consequences for my delay but thankfully not with his life.

Why re write when she’s already done it for me

Continuing the last post. After the Government of the Canary Islands declared no Club owns Presa Canario but it’s just their own dog and symbol they demanded breed name be revoked and changed back to Presa Canario. And original breed standard is respected again as it’s against the breed to change it.

First changes were requested in Spain from RSCE and official breed Clubs had to follow. RSCE is a member country of FCI and is responsible for its national breeds and proposes changes to FCI.

FCI was informed of the situation and for the sake of unification breed name was changed back from Dogo Canario to Presa Canario. Dogo Canario stopped existing.

Breed standard took a longer bureaucratic route. And now it just followed suit. As of 2023 breed standard and name follow what was before.

This breed standard hasn’t changed to a new one. This breed standard isn’t new. This breed standard canceled changes made over the years to breed standard and name and calls to respect the original Presa Canario. To keep Presa Canario a Presa Canario.

Breed dogs to fit standard instead of asking to change breed standard to fit your dogs

A1A is to honor our Arya. I frequently would say to Arya as she was making her feelings known when she couldnt be where I was ‘why dont you have a A1 day!’ Which is what Skylar would say to car wash customers in Breaking Bad. So eventually one of Arya’s many nicknames became A1A
